Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest: visiting the REGUA Reserve
The REGUA Reserve stretches across the equivalent of 19,000 football pitches, safeguarding a parcel of the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil.
Sadly, very little of the Atlantic Rainforest had been protected and only 7% of the original forest cover remains. But despite the loss, this ecoregion is still ranked in the top five of the world's biodiversity hotspots. One of the greatest problems is that the forest is highly fragmented; if you want patches of forest to retain their ecological complexity long-term, they must first be safeguarded, then joined up through reforestation. This is what the team at REGUA is doing.
Brazil's Atlantic Forest under threat - 15 Oct 07
Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo travels to the Mata Atlantica, which is as rich in biodiversity as the more famous Amazon and in danger of disappearing under expanding cities.
The tree industry and the restoration of the Atlantic Forest
Putting together strengths among communities, environmentalists and the planted trees industry has been allowing the recovery of the Atlantic Forest, home to 20,000 species of native plants and 270 species of mammals. This important action is reflected in the video, which was produced by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), in partnership with the Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá) and the New Generation Plantations (NGP).

Birdwatching/ Observação de aves - Atlantic Rainforest, Brazil. Slowdown videos - no text
Natureza é pop!
Eng: Birdwatching on the coastal city of Ubatuba, São Paulo state, Brazil, where Atlantic rainforest and Serra do Mar mountains meet the Atlantic ocean.
With bird species typical of this habitat.
Putting out papayas for them is a perfect occasion to contemplate (and record) these beautiful and colorful birds.
Footages with hand-held câmera (I had to hide a bit not the scare them...)
No sound editing, with sound of sea at the background and beautiful Brazilian music I was just listening to at the moment of recording.
Musics from
Dorival Caymmi:
É doce morrer no mar
A lenda do Abaeté
Pescaria (canoeiro)
O bem do mar
The Atlantic Forest
The Atlantic Forest once covered a vast part of coastal Brazil, and reached inland several hundred kilometres, as well as parts of Paraguay and northern Argentina.
Today, several conservation areas protect parts of the forest, and projects are under way to link some of the remaining islands of forest by planting trees to form corridors to allow the free movement of wildlife.
Filmed as an entry for the DVInfo UWOL 25 contest.
