Brazil's Atlantic Forest six years on
Ecosia is the search engine that plants trees: ecosia.org
We started planting trees in Brazil's Atlantic Forest six years ago – and look at the difference!
Less than 8% of the original Atlantic Rainforest (Mata Atlantica in Brazilian) now remains, and it occurs mostly in isolated remnants scattered throughout a landscape dominated by agricultural uses.
Ecosia is partnered with the Pacto Mata Atlantica, a united group of 300 institutions that work together to conserve what remains of the ecosystem.
Find out about Brazil's female tree-planters in our next video:

Help us to protect Mata Atlântica, Brazil's Atlantic forest!
AgraDEço is looking for your support on GoFundMe!
What are we collecting for?
The money will be used by project AgraDEço to buy and protect an additional 20 ha of land with more than 70% of primary forest of the Mata Atlântica (Brazil's Atlantic forest).
Through monitoring and regular inspections by the project leader (Robert Ineichen) and volunteers, hunting and illegal deforestation in this virgin forest will be prevented in this area.
The remaining 30% of these 20 ha are degraded forest, remains of the slash-and-burn land management. This portion will be reforested through agroforestry, in which agriculture and forestry will be possible in harmony.
This project will not only help to protect the Mata Atlântica forest but will also be a demonstration for the locals of a sustainable way to combine environmental protection and small-scale food production for the local market.

Rainforest Restoration in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest
NGP participants Fibria, Stora Enso, Suzano and Veracel all have plantations within the Atlantic forest biome, managing more than 2 million hectares of land between them. Around half of this area is planted with eucalyptus, almost all of it on former grazing land that had become heavily degraded. The rest is set aside for conservation. And it’s here that the Atlantic forest is making a comeback.
Brazil's Atlantic Forest under threat - 15 Oct 07
Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo travels to the Mata Atlantica, which is as rich in biodiversity as the more famous Amazon and in danger of disappearing under expanding cities.
Birding Brazil - SE Atlantic Rainforest
Some birding highlights from our two week self-drive trip in the Mata Atlantica. Destinations were Sao Paulo, Intervales, Fazenda Bacury near Piracicaba, Itatiatia (Penedo) incl. Agulhas Negras and Ubatuba. A great travel destination, with fantastic birding and good infrastructure. Some Portuguese would have helped though. Can't wait to return! All video was digiscoped with a homemade adaptor and a Samsung phone. Music by The Eels.
You can restore the Atlantic Rainforest
Ecosia is the search engine that plants trees:
Searching with Ecosia really does make a difference. With your help, we can restore Brazil's most threatened ecosystem – the Atlantic rainforest. We're working with institutions on the ground to plant trees in this vital biodiversity hotspot.
Every month we invest at least 80% of our surplus in tree planting projects all over the world.

The Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact approach to restoration in Brazil
In 2009, a group of NGOs, private companies, governments, and research institutions launched one of the most ambitious ecological restoration programs in the world – the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) Restoration Pact. The program has more than 260 members and has a mission to restore 15 million hectares of the forest by 2050. The Pact aims to promote biodiversity conservation, job creation and income generating opportunities through the restoration supply chain, provision of key ecosystem services to millions of people as well as to establish incentives for landowners to comply with the Forest Act. The coalition plans to restore more than 1 million hectares of land by the Bonn Challenge’s target of 2020.
Here Pedro Brancalion, an ecologist with the Pact, explains the approach they take to restoration in Brazil.
Coast of the Atlantic Forest (Costa da Mata Atlântica)
The Coast of the Atlantic Forest has been the tourist name since 2003, for the region that encompasses the nine cities of the coastal area of São Paulo known as Baixada Santista, which are: Bertioga, Cubatão, Guarujá, Santos, São Vicente, Praia Grande, Mongaguá, Itanhaém and Peruíbe. The nine cities, therefore, form an only destination with several reasons for being visited: beaches, ecotourism, leisure, adventure, sports, gastronomy, history, culture and business. This diversity turns the Coast of the Atlantic Forest into ‘a unique experience for you’. Each city has its peculiarities, with options for all tastes, and they complete each other, offering a shoreline 161 km long, lush Atlantic Forest, historical and cultural attractions, besides a diversified cuisine and high quality structure for events and business.

Listen to the Forest, Saving Mata Atlantica Brazil
A film by Beverly Raimondo:
Listen to the Forest brings together traditional healers, scientists and volunteers to save Mata Atlantica, Brazil's Atlantic Forest.
Ecologist Dr. Amanda Bernal bridges science and traditional healers to bring a holistic approach to understanding how important it is to save the forest and medicinal plants of Mata Atlantic Brazil.
Dr. Amanda Bernal Cofounder of the Environmental Protection Area (APRA) and Instituto Ecológico Buzios Mata Atlántica (IEBMA)
In Brazil, the use of ancient knowledge in traditional healing incorporates many local medicinal plants with traditional indian healing ceremonies and healing practices brought to Brazil from Africa. Many Brazilians heavily rely on the wisdom of healers and medicinal plants.
Due to human activities, urban development, industrialization, agriculture and intensive tourism along the Atlantic coast of Brazil, Mata Atlantica is in real danger of being completely destroyed
This educational video will bring the viewer closer to understand why it’s so important to respect and preserve healing traditions and the forest's natural resources for humans, nature and for the balance of our ecosystem on earth.

Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest.REGUA
The REGUA Reserve stretches across the equivalent of 19,000 football pitches, safeguarding a parcel of the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil.
Sadly, very little of the Atlantic Rainforest had been protected and only 7% of the original forest cover remains. But despite the loss, this ecoregion is still ranked in the top five of the world's biodiversity hotspots. One of the greatest problems is that the forest is highly fragmented; if you want patches of forest to retain their ecological complexity long-term, they must first be safeguarded, then joined up through reforestation. This is what the team at REGUA is doing.
