Sailing from Lanzarote to Gran Canaria Spain
In this episode I am sailing with Jeroen from Lanzarote to Gran Canaria and checking out the island. The Canary islands are all so different in a beautiful way. You really feel a different vibe on each island. The one is more touristic, the other more layed back, one is more green, the other more volcanic. But to be honest I am in love with them and the people. AND THE PRICES. You can still buy a pizza in a restaurant for €4,95 and a wine for €1,50 A nice steak with pepper sauce for €9.95. It is all still very affordable. That in combination with the all year round 20 plus temperatures makes it almost perfect :)
Ep017 Sailing the Canary Islands and more Atlantic Preparations!
We sail from Lanzarote to Isla De Lobos discovering a beautiful and simple Canarian restaurant, then onto Gran Canaria before exploring stunning La Gomera where we spend 10 awesome days with visits from family, and continuing preparations for our second leg of the Atlantic Crossing.

Sailing Gibraltar to Canary Islands, Lanzarote - HR54 Cloudy Bay, Oct 2017
s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg Rassy 54) starts the Atlantic crossing, sailing from Gibraltar to Canary Islands, where we stop in Puerto Calero Marina, Lanzarote. We are now firmly westward bound. First night we have a very rough upwind sailing in +25kts gusting 32kts and wild sea, which made us turn towards Morocco for shelter. They are not exactly welcoming in Morocco, we have been declined entrance in harbors twice. In the third harbor, Mahamudia, we did manage to go in and shelter for a day and a half behind the harbor wall. Then we set off with 25kts N wind forecast which ended up gale force and breaking seas. But finally, we had a nice run into Lanzarote, arriving late evening, and feeling like we sailed back into summer.

The full story of our Atlantic crossing from Gibraltar to barbados is documented in daily articles on our sailing blog

Sailing Across The Atlantic Ocean with ‘Taipan’ 2019 Part 1 Lanzarote & Gran Canaria
I'm not sailing alone on this cruise. James Robinson and me fly from the UK to the Canaries to join Australians, David and Kris, on board their Kaufman 49 ‘Taipan’ for their third Atlantic crossing. We sail from Lanzarote to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria to prepare the boat for the ocean crossing. Amongst the many jobs to do ‘Taipan’ requires a new windlass, a new fridge compressor and new starter batteries.
#61 Wine Tasting Shenanigans Arrecife, Lanzarote, Canary Islands | Sailing Sisu Leopard 45 Catamaran
This week we take you in and around Arrecife, Capitol of Lanzarote. We stumbled across this awesome little local pub/restaurant in the Industrial area of Arrecife. Whilst sitting outside having scrumptious fresh fish, prepared to perfection, we overheard this awesome singing coming from within the pub. . . . Sweet almost opera like singing ;-). Well we just had to go inside to put faces to these voices. Two everyday kinda guys singing local songs. The one guy Alex (whom we became fast friends with together with his wife Sandra), happened to be the very guy that did the sikaflex work on Sisu in the boatyard. One thing lead to another, and it so happened that the Marketing Manager of Bodegas Los Bermejos (Wine cellar just outside Arrecife) was also in the pub and he landed up inviting all of us for a Wine Tasting the next day! One of the best wines we have ever had in the Canary Islands, a definite recommendation. And we caught Tuna at night in a restaurant in on of the bars and restaurants surrounding the sea inlet El Charco de San Gines. Servo, owner of Lemon Tusca is such a awesome dude, always doing his utmost to keep his customers happy. The boats bobbing gently on the water with the sun reflecting is quite magical, a photographers dream.

We purchased a Leopard 45 Catamaran to sail around the world and we went through the preparations of getting her kitted out for our needs. We now sailing to exotic destinations off the beaten tack and are prepared for ice bergs, storms, heavy seas, as well as nice tranquil tropical waters...
Follow us on our journey as we learn from legends when Sailing La Vagabonde upgraded from a monohull to a catamaran...SV Delos wants to upgrade to the latest Amel 51 monohull....Gone with the Wynns chose a Leopard Catamaran....choices choices choices. We looked at other sailing channels such as Wicked Salty, Satori, Jessica and Ryan, Catamaran Impi, MJ Sailing, Happy Together, Sailing Uma, Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose, Zingaro, Miss Lone Star, Sailing Doodles, Drenched, Lucky Fish gets Away, RAN Sailing, Out Chasing Star, Follow the Boat, Rigging Doctor, Sailing Lady Africa, Abandon Comfort, and many others to find our answers and solutions, whilst we prepared our yacht in Cape Town, South Africa.
Catamaran Sailing from the Med into the Atlantic
Smooth sailing from Gibraltar to Gran Canaria after a break in Gibraltar.
After passing Tarifa point and its local waves, we pick up crew in Mohammedia (Morocco). Shortly after, we catch a large saharian squid...
We have a go at Lanzarote to address a non-cooperating water-maker. That gives us a chance to do field school work on volcanic soils with our 8 year old son.
As we sail towards the south, the winds turns SE. So we change plan to minimize stress on the boat and keep ourselves downwind sailing in 3-4m waves.
With always work to do on the boat, Las Palmas becomes a temporary homeport.

14] ATLANTIC OCEAN SAILING, 5 days from Gibraltar to Lanzarote //Let’s Just Go Sailing - Postcard 14
We sail 650 nautical miles from the rock of Gibraltar to Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. It was our first meeting with the Atlantic Ocean and we were humbled, disciplined and put in our place as the weather showed us who’s boss. We had squalls and some uncomfortable waves the whole way down which wasn’t predicted as strong as it truly was. It was a scary thing to see at some times but we have a strong boat and pulled together to make it through. Hallberg Rassy for those of you who don’t know are based in Sweden and make boats for the tough conditions of the North Sea. We felt glad to have such a safe strong boat on this passage as we had at times 30 knot winds and 4 meter waves. Videos rarely do the sea justice but trust me it was big enough to be scary. We tried to catch these moments out at sea as best we could but obviously couldn’t film the full on moments. We were knocked sideways hard a few times but not broached and in these conditions couldn’t risk the spinnaker pole. A true learning experience.
