Santorini: Discovering Atlantis Bookstore
Our blog is mostly written in Norwegian, but every time our precious secrets are meant for the entire world we write excerpts of it in English.
A particularly stressful day in Santorini this summer, we stumbled a cross an interesting small shop hidden in this flawless village of Oia.
Well, there are many truly beautiful shops, cafes and restaurants. Stunning views and beautiful churches. But this particular shop has a completely inspirational story to it, and even better is the many choices of non commercial must-have books you can find here. For instance I found the perfect child book for me; Good night stories for rebel girls. I do fancy children books even at a age of 44.
If you do love books, or need a break from the maddening crowds visit this shop. Take a deep breath, enjoy the scent of well written books. And please, bring your children. My children loves this books shop!

Sharing video highlights/slight vlog-ish of our Santorini Trip – Part 1 (super late upload).
Warning a bit long: If you’re planning to go to Santorini this might be helpful.
Some observations/highlights during this Santorini trip:
1. Places to visit in Santorini – Three Bells of Fira, Imerovigli Anastasi Church, Ammoudi Bay, Byzantine castle ruins, Oia Castle, Atlantis books, Μουσείο Μουσικών Οργάνων Θήρας (Museum), Santorini Sunset view, Perissa Beach, Firá, Akrotíri Archaeological Site and Red Beach, Ancient Thira, Archeological Museum, Firá, Museum of Prehistoric Thira, Blue Domes at Perissa, Imerovigli Anastasi Church
2. Accomodation - We stayed for 3 days in Santorini. I stayed at Valvi Irini (114 sgd per room per night), Villa Kostas (115sgd per room per night). I highly recommend Villa Kostas (Mary the owner showed so much hospitality during my stay). A bit pricey during Summer season (peak). My friend Nhitz stayed at Villa Kasteli also a good place to stay.
3. Transport – Hiring a private Shuttle will cost you 30Euros per trip (a bit pricey), so we highly suggest to take public transpo (bus), it will only cost you 2-3euros per trip. If you can drive, hiring a car for the whole day will be a good option as well.
4. Tours – We only booked the tour package for Sunset Cruise, the rest is DIY (do it yourself) especially for Oia, Santorini, Walking from Fira to Oia is also advisable if you want to see more breathtaking sceneries of Santorini, but please be warned that it would take atleast 2-3 hours of walk in the scourging heat of the sun so bring water bottle with you.
5. Foods – most common that you should try – Souvlaki, Moussaka, Gyros, Feta and Cheese. Ofcourse the Greek Yogurt. Food here is cheaper compared to other European countries (ranging from 7 – 10 euros per meal- they have big servings per plate, so we normally share 1 order for 2 person).
6. Photography – you need to have lots of patience if you want an instagrammble shot at Oia, Santorini, you need to queue for a certain spot just to have that perfect shot.
7. Perissa Beach – Black sand beach, the water was really good that I find it therapeutic, instead of visiting other places, we stayed here for the rest of the day just to relax, that’s how good it was.
8. Visa Application / Insurance – If you’re from Singapore, if Greece is your only destination you can only apply for it at French Embassy. Visa fee from Singapore - $94.20 (Singapore dollar). Insurance is also mandatory for acquiring Schengen visa. I avail mine at FWD – SG$72.80 for coverage of 3 weeks.
9. Locals – as per our experience most of them were accommodating, the taxi driver taught us some of their language. They can understand English, though if not, you can use google translator (it helps).
10. Weather – we went there during summer, and Summer there is really the HOTTTT summer 32-33 degs. (compared to other Europe cities where it is summer but the temp. At morning is at 16deg cels). Use sunscreen if you like. For me, I’m the only person there who used umbrella – trust me it helps a lot. hahaha (too hot), though you might feel judged at first, coz Europeans love the heat of the sun. Don’t forget to bring water if you visit in summer.
11. Wifi / Internet – If you’re from Singapore, we highly recommend Changi Recommends. Around, 5-7 Sgd per day. Or avail of pocket data. Some of my friends bought sim cards from online stores (it will save a lot of penny, though it will limit your internet use – not for millenials.lol)
12. Cost – It is pricier to visit in Summer (coz its their peak season), though its okay as well, coz more activities can be done. Also you don’t need to carry a lot of bulky winter clothes, - tee’s (tshirt) will be enough/good.
13. Language – 99% of people in Santorini speak in Greek (but as per our experience they can easily understand English). We tried to speak in English for this Video – to cater for our foreign friends..lol (pardon the grammar, accent issues). Of course, we don’t know how to speak in greek.
14. Create lots of Memories, i’m thankful to my gorgeous and super beautiful travelmate Nhitz here who’s very selfless in taking our photos. We brought, Mirrorless cam, SLR Cam, DJI stabilizer for videos. (aside from our phone cam)

What Do We Know About Atlantis?
Atlantis has been called a utopia that vanished ages ago. It’s been called everything from a lost city, to a sunken continent, to the home of Aquaman. And it’s been a source of debate and controversy as to whether or not it ever truly existed. There are many questions about this legendary location but few definitive answers. It makes you wonder, What do we know about Atlantis?

#6 Atlantis Equals Atlantic
The legend states that Atlantis sank into the Atlantic Ocean, so that’s the area most often targeted by theorists. And the similarity between the names Atlantis and Atlantic makes for a convenient match. We’ve already mentioned several locations in the Atlantic that have been cited as possible locations for Atlantis. Here are a few more: The Madeira Islands and the Canary Islands west of the Straits of Gibraltar are often suggested as possible sites. Also near the Straits is a submerged island called Spartel. It lies about 56 meters (184 feet) underwater and is thought to have disappeared 12,000 years ago due to rising ocean levels. The story would seem to fit the legend of Atlantis.
#5 The Bimini (bih-min-ee) Wall
In the 1970s a paranormal theory emerged that added even more intrigue to the Atlantis legend. It was suggested that Atlantis was a continent that truly existed and was located off the Bahamas within an area of the Bermuda Triangle! The idea is that the leftover technology of Atlantis was somehow responsible for all the mysterious events that occurred within the Triangle. Adherents to this idea cite the Bimini (bih-min-ee) Wall as proof. Located in North Bimini Island, the wall is an apparent structure that resembles an expansive pavement made from stones. It’s also been described as a road or some other type of structure that represents the remnants of Atlantis. But a contradictory theory goes that these are naturally occurring rock formations. What do you think?
#4 Ancient Anchors
Plato claimed that Atlantis was located near the Pillars of Heracles (or Hercules). Today, those land masses are known as the Straits of Gibraltar that connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Some purported evidence of Atlantis may have shown up there in 2017. Although in this case researchers are referring to this as a lost city as opposed to a lost continent. Archaeologists found stone anchors that measure nearly 3 feet across (83 cm) and would have been used for a large vessel. Dating back some 4,000 years, the anchors are taken as evidence that ships might have docked in the area during the Bronze Age. The marsh where the artifacts were found was once an open bay adjacent to the Pillars of Hercules. Because of that, some researchers theorize that a harbor of Atlantis may have once existed there.
#3 The Book of Atlantis
Remember that we earlier mentioned how the popular perception of Atlantis didn’t come about until the late 19th century? In 1882 a book called “Atlantis: The Antediluvian World” was published by a US Congressman man named Ignatius L. Donnelly. In addition to being a political figure, he was also an amateur scientist and a writer. He was among the first to take Plato’s story as a mostly factual historical account. But Donnelly went farther, claiming that nearly all advancements in civilization and technology could be traced to the ancient sunken island. Other writers would later expand on those ideas and add their own theories. Donnelly’s book inspired so much popular interest in the subject that it’s often credited with helping to keep the legend of Atlantis alive through to the present day.
#2 Santorini and Ancient Thera
This is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, and its story has some interesting parallels to Atlantis. More than 4,000 years ago it was known as Thera (thee-rah) and was part of the advanced Minoan (min-oh-un) civilization. Regarded as Europe's first great civilization, the Minoans constructed paved roads and ornate palaces. And they were the first Europeans to develop a written language. But at the apex of their power the Minoans suddenly disappeared. Around 3,600 years ago the civilization was taken out by one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in recorded history. An estimated 10 million tons of rock and ash were spewed into the atmosphere. Tsunamis later followed and wiped out Minoan cities. You can see why Santorini, or Thera, is often cited as being the strongest possibility for having been the historical location of Atlantis.

Atlantis Books - We're a little bit different
Atlantis Books opened on 5 April 2014. We sell a mixture of new and used books, around 15,000 in all, along with posters, board games, secondhand CDs and vinyl. We specialize in graphic novels, fantasy/sci-fi novels, hunting books, children's non-fiction and board games. You can come into our store to check us out, or you can order from us online. If you have any problems with this website then call us on 0800 196 196 or email sales@atlantisbooks.co.nz.
One of the first things you will notice about our shop is the mixture of both new and used books. We believe that content matters more than condition. People often just want to find the right book and they don't mind if it is new or used.
We have also wanted to break away from the trend of best sellers and all the new flashy gimmicks that come out. Sure, we will stock new titles. But the vast majority of our titles are the tried and trusted.
If there is anything we don't have in store then we are more than happy to find it. Atlantis Books has a network of suppliers around the world that can fill even the most bizarre of needs. It may just take a bit of time and research if the order comes out of left field. But we are willing to spend time and energy tracking what you want down.
