Japan Training Squadron visits Pearl Harbor on around the world deployment
PEARL HARBOR - A Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) training squadron (JTS) composed of three ships began a three-day port visit at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam June 1 as part of an around the world deployment to 16 ports in 13 countries.
During the port visit, Adm. Scott Swift, commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet, toured the JTS flagship JS Kashima (TV 3508), reviewed sailors in formation and spoke to newly-commissioned Japanese ensigns about the strong and lasting U.S.-Japan partnership at sea.
“All of you embody this shared heritage, which is based on the past 70 years of the rule-based order that was forged in war and sustained in peace, and allowed our nations and many others in this region to achieve incredible levels of prosperity,” said Swift. “Maritime forces play a crucial role in guarding and sustaining this prosperity by preserving access for the broadest possible base of maritime nations in accordance with international law.”
More than 750 Japanese sailors and 200 newly commissioned ensigns are on the first leg of the 168-day cruise that will take them around the world while developing seamanship and leadership skills. The squadron also includes the training vessel JS Setoyuki (TV 3518) and the Asagiri-class destroyer JS Asagiri (DD 151).
While in Hawaii, members of the squadron laid wreaths at the USS Arizona Memorial, Makiki Japanese Naval Graveyard, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl Cemetery), and Ehime Maru Memorial. The JTS band also teamed up with the Pacific Fleet band for a joint engagement at the Ala Moana Shopping Center.
Additionally, JTS Commander Rear Adm. Hidetoshi Iwasaki, along with the three ships’ commanding officers, met with Swift and Hawaii Gov. David Ige on a goodwill visit aimed at promoting international friendship.
Later this month, JMSDF ships will participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise scheduled June 30 to Aug. 4, in and around the Hawaiian Islands. Japan’s participation in the 2016 iteration marks the 19th time the country has participated in the exercise.
An international court handed down a decision that pointed a finger at the unjustness of Beijing’s self-serving actions and statements related to its territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Regarding the so-called nine-dash line - based on which China claims sovereignty - the arbitration court said there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights. The court also said there was no evidence that China had historically exercised exclusive control over the resources and waters.
The international court further concluded that China was not entitled to an exclusive economic zone for the artificial islands it has constructed in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.

Otherwise known as the A-140-J2 (Wargaming gave it a name to fit with the other ships, same with other unnamed paper ships like Myogi). It's a bit of an oddball, and set to be buffed next patch since the Iowa generally outclasses it.

I held a travel tripod up to make some heights.
I was afraid all images were shaky with standard stabilization of 4k30p.
But it was surprisingly stable even with zoom when I stood still.

STORYLINE:
A Chinese warship dropped anchor at Tokyo bay on Wednesday for the first time since World War II in a highly symbolic display of improving ties between the two Asian countries.
The port call by the guided missile destroyer 'Shenzhen' is the first to Japan by China.
As part of a mutual exchange, a Japanese warship will visit China later.
During its four-day stay, the 'Shenzhen' will be open to the Japanese public for tours.
It will also dock at the Japanese naval headquarters in Yokosuka, just south of the capital, before returning home to the southern Chinese port in Zhanjiang.
Diplomatic relations between Japan and China, which are increasingly vying for economic and political clout in the region, have visibly improved over the past year.
Ties between the two countries had gone sour two years ago over territorial disputes and over a Japanese leaders' visits to a Tokyo war shrine, which many Chinese saw as inflammatory.
But both sides have toned down their rhetoric and agreed to expand political and military exchanges.
China said before the 'Shenzhen' left port that it hoped the call would have a positive effect on the development of the relationship between the two countries and their defence departments.
Still, distrust between Beijing and Tokyo runs deep, particularly over military issues.
Japan's brutal invasion and occupation of much of China in the 1930s and '40s have left a legacy of bitterness, one that Beijing has occasionally stoked to cater to a nationalist public.
Japanese officials, meanwhile, have repeatedly expressed concerns about China's surging military spending in recent years, calling for more transparency.
Japan is especially concerned with China's growing naval capabilities and its development of submarines that can operate farther away from China's shores for longer periods.
That concern is shared by Washington, Tokyo's closest ally, which sees China's military growth as a potentially destabilising factor in Asia.
Beijing last week deeply embarrassed the US by refusing to allow the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier and its battle group entry into the port of Hong Kong.
The Kitty Hawk is currently docked in Japan.

The runway of this airport is only 1500m, therefore planes bigger than B737 cannot land.
We can only enjoy this view for a few more days.
Because this airport would cease operations from 2013 March 6th.
And new airport would open on March 7th.
