My Choice - Vittoriosa (Birgu): 2 songs by Nana Mouskouri
We'll hear two song sung by the great Greek Singer, Nana Mouskouri while we take a tour of the City of Vittoriosa, known as Il-Birgu by the Maltese.
1st song is Recuerdos de la Alhambra (Memories of the Alhambra) and is a classical guitar piece composed in 1896 by Spanish composer and guitarist Francisco Tárrega.
After being allowed to fall into disrepair for centuries, the Alhambra was discovered in the 19th century by European scholars and travelers, with restorations commencing. It is now one of Spain's major tourist attractions, exhibiting the country's most significant and well known Islamic architecture together with 16th-century and later Christian building and garden interventions.
The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the inspiration for many songs and stories.
The 2nd song is a 1971 composition, A Place in My Heart

VITTORIOSA (IL-BIRGU)
Birgu (Maltese: Città Vittoriosa or Birgu, Italian: Città Vittoriosa or Vittoriosa) is an ancient city in Malta. It played a vital role in the Siege of Malta in 1565. Its population stood at 2,758 in March 2011.
Birgu is a very old locality on the south side of the Grand Harbour in Malta, with its origins reaching back to medieval times. Birgu is ideally situated for safe anchorage, and over time it has developed a very long history with maritime, mercantile and military activities. Prior to the establishment of Valletta as capital and main city of Malta, military powers that wanted to rule the Maltese islands would need to obtain control of Birgu due to its significant position in the Grand Harbour.
When the Knights arrived in 1530, they made Birgu the capital city of Malta, since the former capital, Mdina, was inland and did not suit their naval requirements.
The city was fortified in 1551 and strengthened in 1554 in preparation for an attack by the Ottoman Empire. This included the construction of the Castle of St Angelo, a large fortification separated from the city by a narrow channel. The castle was connected to the city by means of a drawbridge.
Birgu was the site of a major battle between the Knights and the Ottoman Empire during the Siege of Malta in 1565. After four months of successful defence by the Knights, the city was almost captured by the Ottoman army in August 1565, but was recaptured by the Knights under Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette. Further forces arrived a month later, and the siege was abandoned by the Ottomans. After this, a new capital city was built on Mount Sceberras, bearing the name Valletta. In 1571, the Knights transferred their convent and seat to the new capital and Birgu lost much of its importance. After the Siege, Birgu was given the title Città Vittoriosa, Italian for victorious city.
The parish church is dedicated to St. Lawrence and was once the Conventual Church of the Order of St John. The saint's day is celebrated on August 10. Also in Birgu is the Church dedicated to Our Lady of the Annunciation run by the Dominican Order. This church is also known as St. Dominic's Church. The feast of Saint Dominic is held every last Sunday of August.
The Freedom Monument commemorates the departure of British forces from the island in 1979. Birgu also contains the Auberges of the Knights, including the Auberge d'Angleterre, for some time the home of the Knights of St John on the island, which now contains a public library.

Valletta (or Il-Belt) is the tiny capital of the Mediterranean island nation of Malta. The walled city was established in the 1500s on a peninsula by the Knights of St. John, a Roman Catholic order. It’s known for museums, palaces and grand churches. Baroque landmarks include St. John’s Co-Cathedral, whose opulent interior is home to the Caravaggio masterpiece The Beheading of Saint John.
Terraced Barrakka Gardens offers views over the Grand Harbour and the refurbished Vittoriosa waterfront of Birgu. When parliament’s not in session visitors can tour 16th-century Grandmaster’s Palace, currently the office of Malta’s president. The National Museum of Archaeology is housed in the Mannerist-style Auberge de Provence. The National Museum of Fine Arts, in a rococo palace, displays works by Maltese, Italian and other European artists. Gozo is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, one of 21 that make up the Maltese archipelago. Inhabited for thousands of years, it shows evidence of historic immigration and rule by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Sicilians, French and British, among others. It’s known for its Neolithic Ġgantija Temple ruins, rural hiking paths, beaches and scuba-diving sites.
The Citadel is a fortified medieval complex overlooking Gozo’s capital city, Rabat (also called Victoria). The city is home to a baroque 17th-century cathedral and several museums. The Museum of Archaeology houses 3,000-year-old sculptures and other relics. The island’s beaches include the resorts of Marsalforn and Xlendi Bay. Northern Ramla Bay is known for its red sand. Popular with divers and snorkelers, Dwejra Bay has an underwater chimney, the Blue Hole, and a lagoon nicknamed the Inland Sea. MALTE La Valette Barrakka
Knights Hospitaller
The Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Hospitallers, Order of Hospitallers, Knights of Saint John and Order of Saint John, were among the most famous of the Western Christian military orders during the Middle Ages.
The Hospitallers probably arose as a group of individuals associated with an Amalfitan hospital in the Muristan district of Jerusalem, which was dedicated to St John the Baptist and founded around 1023 by Blessed Gerard Thom to provide care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims to the Holy Land. (Some scholars, however, consider that the Amalfitan order and Amalfitan hospital were different from Gerard's order and its hospital.) After the Latin Christian conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade, the organisation became a religious and military order under its own Papal charter, and it was charged with the care and defence of the Holy Land. Following the conquest of the Holy Land by Islamic forces, the Order operated from Rhodes, over which it was sovereign, and later from Malta where it administered a vassal state under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily.
