1984: Auckland Arts Festival 2018
1984 - An international, award-winning theatrical production of George Orwell's classic novel, by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan.
Set in a world where an invasive government keeps a malevolently watchful eye on its citizens, this radical and much-lauded staging explores surveillance, identity, and why George Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever. Orwell’s fiction has become our reality.
From UK theatrical innovators Headlong, Orwell’s dystopian classic came roaring onto the stage in 2013 and since then it has become an international phenomenon. Seen by over 500,000 people, it has enjoyed three hugely success¬ful West End seasons and is a current hit on Broadway. Now as part of the 2018 Auckland Arts Festival, the chilling prescience of Orwell is presented in its New Zealand premiere.
A literary masterpiece meets sheer theatrical ambition as one of the 20th century’s greatest novels is given new life by some of the British theatre’s fastest rising stars.

The Pumbhouse Theatre, Takapuna, Auckland
The Pumbhouse Theatre, Takapuna, Auckland
This video was filmed in January.
The information below is from the website
Built in 1905, The PumpHouse was originally a water pumping station. It housed a furnace which energised an enormous pump, that shifted water from the lake to the early settlers of Devonport. In 1983 it was listed as a Category II Historic Building under the protection of The New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
When the Waitakere Ranges became the source of Auckland’s water, The PumpHouse was decommissioned and gradually fell into disrepair. Its identity as a theatre is the legacy of a local community of art lovers and history buffs who in the late 1960s, rescued the buildings from demolition and raised the funds for restoration and conversion into a theatre. This group of locals coalesced to form the North Shore Theatre & Arts Trust which still administers The PumpHouse today.
The PumpHouse operates as a programmed venue for hire for the performing arts. It presents a diverse range of theatre, from plays, musicals, dance, traditional outdoor Summer Shakespeare, stand-up comedy and concerts to psychic mediums, book launches, poetry and play readings.
