Mädler Passage, Leipzig, Germany - Mädlerpassage - Historic Indoor Mall
On my first visit to Leipzig, I was enchanted by all of the passages, or covered malls that were scattered throughout the city. You can see how it was the original influence for the typical American shopping mall. Although the passages are covered, there is no door. They are open air in the sense that the wind blows through them.
The passages are all very old and very ornate. Typical design elements include detailed stonework, flooring, and ceilings. Madler Passage (Mädlerpassage) is located in the center of Leipzig, on Grimmaische Street and Neumarkt.
The current Madler Passage building was constructed between 1912 and 1914. The new structure replaced the famous Auerbach's Cellar and the luggage factory located next door. There are about 20 restaurants and shops located in Madler Passage. It's a nice historical place to shop or stop for a cappuccino. Madler's Passage is especially nice in the winter months, because it provides just enough relief from the cold while allowing for the benefit of fresh air.
Madler's Passage is worth a visit when visiting Leipzig. Here's a partial list of tenants:
