Aughnanure Castle - Oughterard - County Galway - Ireland

Ireland Day 6 Aughnanure Castle
In This Video:
This is day 6 of our Ireland tour! We go to Aughnanure Castle, situated in County Galway. We learn how the structure was designed for defense against other rival families.
Then we head out to the Connemara Marble shop! This is the beautiful marble seen in the Gothic Church from the last video! They make many different things with the marble, but most common is jewelry.
Lastly, we go to the Lunar Landscape, otherwise known as The Burrens. I vast rocky terrain, where it resembles the moon! Beautiful place!

Aughnanure Castle (Caisleán Achadh na nlubhar in Irish) is a tower house in Oughterard, County Galway, in Ireland. The castle was built by the O'Flahertys in the 16th century, one of Connacht's most notable lord families. Aughnanure is one of over 200 tower houses in County Galway, constructed mainly by Gaelic and Anglo-Norman land owning families. The tower lies close to the shores of Lough Corrib, and translates to the field of the yews in Irish (Achadh na nlubhar).

Aughnanure Castle
It was built by the O'Flahertys around 1500 and is on the shores of Lough Corrib about 4km on the Galway side of Oughterard. Descendants of this famous Galway family often enjoy a lovely meal and a pint in Breathnachs.

We visited this beautiful tower castle from the 1500s and did some music and photo shoots here! What an awesome experience!
It is rich in history of the fierce O'Flahertys and the Norman invasion of Ireland. Definately would recommend seeing it!

Aughnanure Castle visitor attraction in Co. Galway
Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto Fortune favours the strong and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto Powerful by land and by sea, were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour. © Galway Tourism
