The Beauty of Augrabies Falls National Park
This is where the mighty Orange River is at its most impressive as it thunders its way through a ravine and cascades down into a pool walled by sheer granite, 56m below. Few sights are as awesome or sound as deafening as water thundering down the 56m Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in full swing.
Augrabies Falls is easily accessed from Upington, as it is only 120km south of the town along tarred roads. Travelling from Upington on the N14 (that runs between Upington and Springbok) turn right just after Kakamas. From here it’s 28km further to the
Park gate and another 3km to Reception and the rest camp.

Augrabies Fall National Park in the Northern Cape
The Augrabies National Park is looking to reinvent itself as it celebrates it half century as part of South African National Parks. While people stream to the park when it's in flood, it's normally quiet the rest of the time. Augrabies is now catering for adrenaline junkies - using it's rugged hills, and challenging veld as bait. But it's still a place where you can unwind and spend time with your family, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Ulrich Hendriks and cameraperson, Jabu Oa Afrika visited Augrabies and filed this report.

Augrabies Falls 03/05/2018
The Augrabies Falls National Park is about 120 km west of Upington and about 40 km north of Kakamas in the vast and airy Northern Cape province of South Africa. Over thousands of years the Orange River has carved a deep gorge in the granite rock.
The Augrabies falls is among the world's largest cataract waterfalls.
The water drops down 56 meters and enters the 18 km long gorge with steep, slippery rock walls. It's especially impressive when the Orange River is in full flood after heavy rains. That much water makes a lot of noise and this is where the waterfall gets it's name.
It was given to the Water Fall by a Swede, Hendrik Jakob Wikar, when he passed there in 1799. The name is derived from the Nama word as the Khoi people would refer to “Aukoerebis meaning the Place of Great Noise.

Augrabies Falls - Northern Cape - South Africa
The Augrabies Falls National Park is the site of the Augrabies Falls or 'the place of great noise' (which is the meaning of the Khoi word 'Akoerebis'). Here, the Orange River thunders spectacularly down a 60m-drop into a gorge hewn through huge rocks. The Khoi people had great respect for the falls and usually avoided the area as they believed it to be home of the great white water monster.

Augrabies Falls National Park lies 120 km west of Upington and 40 km northwest of Kakamas on a tarred access route. The Khoi people called it ‘Aukoerebis’, the place of the Great Noise, referring to the Orange River thundering its way downwards for 60 metres in a spectacular waterfall. Easily accessed through an extensive network of boardwalks (some are wheelchair friendly) the falls are now illuminated at night. The caravan and camping sites are set in a shaded area, and all sites have power points with ablution and barbecue facilities.
