Unreconciled: Museums, Galleries and Aboriginal Art History - Research Tuesdays June 2016
The value of the South Australian Museum is unquestioned
It holds among the most extensive and important collections of Aboriginal creativity and material culture in the world. But what values, and whose values, does a museum promote in the way it cares for and displays art and material culture? How does this differ from the role of an Art Gallery? And where on North Terrace, if anywhere, does the extraordinary narrative of Aboriginal art history play out?
Australia is home to the most interesting, continuous and dynamic artistic traditions on our planet. Yet this story gets diluted in the divisions between art galleries and museums, between their collections, and between the intellectual traditions such as art history and anthropology that interpret them.
In this lecture we walk the laneway between the Art Gallery of South Australia and the South Australian Museum, and explore the competing, complementary and evolving roles that Australian cultural institutions play in reshaping the narratives of Australian art and history.
The presenter
Professor John Carty is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Adelaide and Head of Anthropology at the South Australian Museum. He has worked throughout regional Australia on Aboriginal health, science and cultural projects, and actively researches the role of museums in collaboration with the British Museum and National Museum of Australia.

PT 2 OF 2 PARTS Historical Broome with Broome museum WA Western Australia
CARAVAN TRIP 2007 Broome is a pearling and tourist town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, 2200 km north of Perth. The year round population is approximately 14,000, growing to around 30,000 during the tourist season.[citation needed] Broome International Airport provides transport to several regional and domestic towns and cities. History The first European to visit Broome was William Dampier in 1688 and again in 1699. Many of the coastal features of the area are named by him. In 1879, Charles Harper suggested that the pearling industry could be served by a port closer to the pearling grounds and that Roebuck Bay would be suitable. In 1883, John Forrest selected the site for the town, and it was named after the Governor of Western Australia, Sir Frederick Broome. In 1889, a telegraph undersea cable was laid from Broome to Singapore, connecting to England. Hence the name Cable Beach given to the landfall site. Location of BroomeThe town has an interesting history based around the exploits of the men and women who developed the pearling industry, starting with the harvesting of oysters for mother of pearl in the 1880s to the current major cultured pearl farming enterprises. The riches from the pearl beds did not come cheap, and the town's Japanese cemetery is the resting place of more than 900 Japanese divers who lost their lives working in the industry. Many were lost at sea and the exact number of deaths is unknown. The Japanese were only one of the major ethnic groups who flocked to Broome to work on the luggers or the shore based activities supporting the harvesting of oysters from the waters around Broome. They were specialist divers and, despite political pressure to expel them in support of the White Australia Policy, became an indispensable part of the industry until World War II. Broome was attacked by Japanese aircraft on March 3, 1942. The air raid killed at least 88 people. Following the end of the war in 1945, the town and its pearling industry gradually recovered from the disruptions of wartime. The West Australian mining boom of the 1960s, as well as the growth of the tourism industry, also helped Broome develop and diversify. Broome is one of the fastest growing cities in Australia
Pichi Richi Railway Australia - Double Headed Afghan Express

On the 30th of September, the Pichi Richi Railway operated the 'Afghan Express' from Port Augusta to Quorn.
The special service was hauled by ex-Commonwealth Railways NM25 (built 1925) from Port Augusta to Woolshed Flat where ex-Western Australian Government Railways W916 (masquerading as W22) (built 1951) was added for the journey to Quorn.
This remarkable journey along the Pichi Richi Railway follows the original Ghan route cutting through the Flinders Ranges. Many of the carriages used on the train are genuine timber-bodied carriages built in the late 1920s.
On this particular day, the 2017 AFL Grand Final between Adelaide and Richmond was played with the locomotive crews showing their South Australian pride by chalking up We Steam As One, Go Crows.
Pichi Richi Railway:
The Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society (PRRPS) is a not-for-profit incorporated association formed in 1973 to preserve the railway through Pichi Richi Pass. This is the most scenic part of the Port Augusta and Government Gums Railway (the original Ghan railway begun in 1878) featuring deep rock cuttings, superb stone wall embankments and spectacular iron bridges.
PRRPS has progressively restored and operated the Pichi Richi Railway as a working museum. PRRPS has also preserved a large collection of historic locomotives, goods and passenger vehicles, restoring many to working order.

Kalgoorlie Gold Mining WA 1930's -- 1950's
OLD FOOTAGE PHOTOSKalgoorlie, alternatively known as Kalgoorlie-Boulder, is a city in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, and is located 595 kilometres (370 mi) east-northeast of Perth, the state capital. The city was founded in 1893 during the Yilgarn-Goldfields gold rush, and is located close to the so-called Golden Mile.
It has a population of 28,246,[1] making it the largest urban centre in the Goldfields-Esperance region and the fifth-largest in Western Australia.
The mining of gold, along with other metals such as nickel, has been a major industry in Kalgoorlie ever since, and today employs about one-quarter of Kalgoorlie's workforce and generates a significant proportion of its income. The concentrated area of large gold mines surrounding the original Hannan find is often referred to as the Golden Mile, and is considered by some to be the richest square mile of earth on the planet. The town's population was about 30,000 people in 1903 and began to grow into nearby Boulder.
Kalgoorlie after the 1934 race riotsThe narrow gauge Government railway line reached Kalgoorlie in 1896, and the main named railway service from Perth was the overnight sleeper train The Westland which ran until the 1970s. In 1917, a standard gauge railway line was completed, connecting Kalgoorlie to the city of Port Augusta, South Australia across 2,000 kilometres (1,243 mi) of desert, and consequently the rest of the eastern states. The standardisation of the railway connecting Perth (which changed route from the narrow gauge route) in 1968 completed the Sydney-Perth railway, making it possible for rail travel from Perth to Sydney—and the Indian Pacific rail service commenced soon after. During the 1890s, the Goldfields area boomed as a whole, with an area population exceeding 200,000, mainly prospectors. The area gained a notorious reputation for being a wild west with bandits and prostitutes. This rapid increase in population led to a proposed new state of Auralia but with the sudden diaspora after the Gold Rush led to plans falling through.
Places, famous or infamous, that Kalgoorlie is noted for include its water pipeline, designed by C. Y. O'Connor, which brings in fresh water from Mundaring Weir near Perth; its Hay Street brothels (the street itself was apparently named after Hay Street, Perth); its two-up school; the goldfields railway loopline; the Kalgoorlie Town Hall; the Paddy Hannan statue/drinking fountain; the Super Pit; and Mt Charlotte lookout. Its main street is Hannan Street, named after the town's founder. One of the infamous brothels also serves as a museum and is a major national attraction.
Kalgoorlie and the surrounding district was serviced by an extensive collection of suburban railways and tramways, providing for both passenger and freight traffic.[3]
