Podcast #211 Tony Kooyumjian of Montelle Winery, Augusta, Missouri audio only
The very first AVA (American Viticultural Area) to be named in the United States was Augusta, Missouri. Even before Napa Valley. Augusta is about 45 minutes outside of St. Louis and the location of our interview with Montelle Winery and Augusta Winery owner Tony Kooyumjian. Tony is a former commercial airline pilot and that alone makes for some great stories. We met with Tony at the Montelle Winery on a fantastically warm day in November to chat about Missouri wine and how a pilot became a winemaker.

Hi I'm Adam Burns with Chandler Hill Vineyards, the closest of the Missouri wineries to St. Louis.
I often get questions about our wineries products, services or the winery itself
People ask What are the perfect growing conditions for MO grapes?
The answer?
The ideal temperature is a high in the upper 80s and low in the mid 60s. The Missouri climate makes the state a great place for grapes. As any Missouri native can tell you, the state has long, hot summers with good sun exposure. This paired with the thin rocky Ozark soil is excellent for growing grapes.

Hi I'm Adam Burns with Chandler Hill Vineyards, the closest of the Missouri wineries to St. Louis.
I often get questions about our wineries products, services or the winery itself. Many visitors are interested in the wine making process here at Chandler Hill Vineyards.
Different types of wine are of course made different. Grapes are harvested and crushed on the same day. Whites are pressed which leaves skin behind in tank for 2 days at a control temperature of 50 degrees. Reds ferment with skin on for about 1 week. Vignole is fermented in a steel tank for 6 months. Chambourcin is fermented in an oak barrel for 6 months to 3 years. Norton is fermented in an oak barrel for 6 months to 1 year.

Baker-Bird Winery ~ Augusta, Kentucky
In 1797, the first commercial vineyard in the United States was planted in the Kentucky Bluegrass Region. Many German immigrants flocked to the Cincinnati area on the Ohio River. German immigrants like Robert Ruf, Henry Stahl, Mathias Darfinger, as well as Joseph Conrad, Joseph, Michael and George Schweitzer left Baden Germany, traveling through Antwerp, and arriving in the Augusta, Kentucky area by the mid 1800s. Since the Ohio River around Cincinnati reminded the german settler's of their Homeland, these new settlers dubbed the area, America's Rhineland(R). The German immigrants helped construct impressive wine cellars and premium wine was produced in Augusta, Kentucky by 1856. The Kentucky Bluegrass produced some of the finest wines in the United States in the mid 1800s.
The historic Abraham Baker wine cellar is restored and newly named in the German tradition, Baker-Bird Winery. That is, the name is based on Baker, who built the winery and Bird, who currently owns the winery. The Baker-Bird brand denotes high quality wines. Since opening our gates in 2010, you are able to visit the winery, which is on the United States National Historic Registry, the Civil War Heritage Trail, and the Freedom Trail. The historic vineyards and winery restoration allows you to savor the tradition of fine wines and Tasting History(R).
Taste our Award-Winning Wines in the original pressing room, historic winery tours give visitors the ultimate wine experience in an historic setting and a large array of items available in our winery.
