Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Augustinermuseum
The Augustiner Museum is a museum in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany located in the former Augustinian Monastery building. It is undergoing an extensive renovation and expansion, the first phase of which ended in 2010. The museum is located in a former Augustinian monastery which was rebuilt between 1914 and 1923.
The First World War not only interrupted the rebuilding but also severely restricted it compared to the original plans, due to lack of funds. The current total renovation, which is planned to include the addition of new exhibitions rooms, began in 2004. The museum's collection, which was begun by the city of Freiburg in the 1880s, can be only partially exhibited due to the building work.
The visual art and sculpture collection includes works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Anselm Feuerbach, Hans Baldung Grien, Matthias Grünewald, the Master of the Housebook, Hans Thoma, and Franz Xaver Winterhalter. There is also a sculpture hall with four-metre-high stone prophets from Freiburg Cathedral, a church organ from Welte & Sons with an exterior from the 1730s, and a library of art and cultural history. The Museum of Municipal History (Museum für Stadtgeschichte) is a department of the Augustiner Museum.
Since 2004 a general reconstruction of the building site has been taking place. Christoph Mäckler, an architect from Frankfurt, was instructed with the planning. The duration of the reconstruction was originally planned to be 5 to 8 years. Until 2010, during first construction phase, the church building was reconstructed. First, archeological excavations as well as measures to stabilize the church building took place. The roof truss, which was heavily infested with wood preservatives, fungi and other pests, was disinfested, decontaminated and taken off in 2007. The damaged parts were restored. In the summer of 2009 the roof truss was straightened up again and put onto the rest of the building. During this time, the church building was a large construction site. By installing an elevator, the building is now barrier free. This also facilitates the transport of the exhibits. Circular galleries were installed. Additional exhibition space was created in the basement floor to provide for special shows for all of Freiburg’s museums. In the attic there is now room for a painting gallery. A café was opened in the former treasury as well as the cloister, which both are on the main floor.
The Augustiner Museum displays a municipal collection of art which was founded in the 1880s by Lord Mayor Otto Winterer. In 1909, the architect Rudolf Schmidt drafted a conversion of this former cloister into a museum. Until then, the cloister had been used by the Theater Freiburg Theater Freiburg. In 1915, the conversion had to be ceased due to the First World War First World War. Work on the building resumed in 1919 under the direction of architectural historian Karl Gruber. The museum opened its doors in November 1923. Originally, the conversion should have resulted in a central museum site in Freiburg, but due to restricted municipal funds after the war, the conversion had to be carried out in a severely limited and provisional way. The building remained in this provisional state up until 2010. Due to contamination caused by wood preservation agents, some of the museum’s wings had been closed for a number of years since they were mostly unusable.

Ryeberg Home Movie: Sun-Dappled Woods, Freiburg, Germany
Freiburger Münster, early 13th century gothic monument with the most beautiful spire on earth (so said Swiss historian, Jacob Burckhardt), anchors the fine town of Freiburg Im Breisgau. The forest-covered hillside belongs to the Black Forest; the locals refer to the hill as the Schlossberg — once a fortified castle, now a beer garden — Freiburg is a university town after all.
Ryeberg.com publishes essays about YouTube videos. It's part online magazine, part video show-and-tell for writers, artists, and critics.

Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) New Town Hall
Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) New Town Hall
Freiburg has the great privilege of having several town halls. However, working out which one is which is not easy, given that the New Town Hall is older than the Old Town Hall, and the city’s oldest town hall is called the Gerichtslaube, or 'Old Court House'.
The reason behind the unusual choice of names lies in the buildings' history. As far back as the late 15th century, King Maximilian I was complaining that the Gerichtslaube was too small and “awkward.” To resolve the lack of space, the Old Town Hall was completed in 1559 to accommodate most of the Freiburg city government. The use of the New Town Hall for city business is relatively recent, given that the University of Freiburg owned it until 1891. Despite its name, the New Town Hall is in fact the older of the two structures. Today, the city’s various government offices and divisions are divided between the two town halls. The rooms of the Gerichtslaube, the Old Court House, are used for official receptions. Tis should give you a basic overview.
The New Town Hall comprises two sumptuous Renaissance buildings joined together by a stately, gabled column entryway. The New Town Hall, as it now appears, dates back to the late 19th century, before which countless modifications were made to the structure. Large bay windows and balconies now adorn the whitewashed building. The interior of the New Town Hall is also a real gem. Elaborate wood carvings and ornamental plaster work on the ceilings create a romantic atmosphere in the spacious rooms. Freiburgers especially like to tie the knot in the former offices of the New Town Hall’s north wing.

Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Mundenhof
The Mundenhof is located on the western edge of Freiburg im Breisgau, and is the smallest district in Freiburg, with only 46 residents. The zoo on the grounds of the Mundenhof is well-visited. The municipal garden center is also located on the grounds. The Mundenhof is one of many Green Spaces in Freiburg, which present a major factor in its reputation as a green city.
In 1968, the grounds were converted to a small outdoor zoo, called a Tiergehege in German to differentiate it from larger zoological gardens. It is the largest zoo in Baden-Württemberg, covering 38 hectares. Eugen Keidel, mayor of Freiburg im Breisgau at the time, was a strong supporter of the project, and on September 28, 1968, the zoo was opened to the public.
In 1971 the Fördergemeinschaft Freiburger Tiergehege e.V. (Friends’ association for Freiburg zoological gardens) was founded. Domesticated species from all over the world and some undomesticated species can now be seen at the Mundenhof.
A top priority of the Mundenhof zoo is to care for and display endangered domesticated species. The open-air exhibition ground is divided into eight sections, each of which are host to various species specific to particular continents. The zoo is home to peacocks, gibbons, crab-eating macaques, brown bears, emus, ostriches, alpacas, yaks, llamas, and many other species. About 30 different species and about 180 individual animals can be observed.
The Verein der Aquarien- und Terrarienfreunde e.V. (Friends‘ association of aquariums and terrariums) converted a former horse barn to house 3 terrariums and 12 pools. The pools range in volume from 500 liters (132 US gallons) to 3000 liters (792 US gallons), and they are divided into 5 salt water and 7 fresh water pools. This section of the park is also dependent on donations to exist, because entry is free.
The park has many interconnecting paths with various viewing points with views of the city of Freiburg and the surrounding land. There is also a restaurant on the grounds of the Mundenhof, called the Hofwirtschaft. Next to the restaurant is a playground. A further attraction are the storks that nest on the Mundenhof grounds. Their nests are further off, but can easily be observed through binoculars.
