2019.07.29 - Aurlandsdalen - Norway
A view of Aurlandsdalen, one of Norways finest hiking trails.
Wiki: Aurlandsdalen (or the Aurlandsdal) is a glacially-formed Norwegian valley that is about 40 kilometres (25 mi) in length (Geiteryggen-Vassbygdi). The valley is situated in Aurland municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, to the south of the Sognefjorden. One of the best-known tourist tracks in Norway follows the valley from Geiteryggen just across the border of Hol municipality and north east to Aurlandsvangen at the Aurlandsfjorden in Sogn. The valley narrows and becomes a tight, dramatic Western Norway valley. It combines glacially carved valleys with diverse plant species, and a number of cultural monuments in the form of old farms and mountain dairy farms (regionally called støls) to form a recognized tourist attraction. The richness in plant species is due to both the soil, rich in minerals formed from phyllitt in the rocks and cultural influence through the centuries.
The upper part of the river running through the valley is called Stemberdøla; in the lower part it is called Aurlandselvi.[1] The route from Aurland to Hol has been the shortest connection between western and eastern Norway since prehistoric times. Thus the valley has been an important connection line for commercial journeys and cattle drives through and along the valley and over the surrounding mountain highlands.

Hiking Aurlandsdalen Valley to Flam
Here’s my video of hiking Aurlandsdalen Mike Wick of “Nor-sota” lodge 1-602 (or the Aurlandsdal) is a glacially-formed Norwegian valley that is about (25 mi) in length. The route east or west from Aurland to Hol or Hol to Aurland has been the shortest connection between western and eastern Norway since prehistoric times. You could call it a super highway from Olso to Sogne Fjords then Ocean. After you take a hike from Osterbo to Vassbygdi the steepest park of Aurlandsdal Valley you could catch a bus to Flam
The hike from Østerbø Fjellstove to Vassbygdi is quite famous. The untouched, wild and beautiful nature of Western Norway, along with the age-old history and culture of all the small settlements, builds respect and fascination for what is and what once was there. One hike through a cultural landscape of abandoned farms at Nesbø, SinjarheimandAlmen, past Nesbøgalden, Berekvamsbrennevinet, Bjørnstigen, Likbjørka andVetlahelvete. All of these names signifies not only a very descriptive name and a very interesting history behind the names, but also tells a story about the culture through generations. At Tirtesva the path divides into two directions. One can choose the steep path Bjørnestigen or the easier route along the river. At Bjønnstigsletta the paths meets yet again.
Vangen Church (Aurland), Church in Aurland, Norway
Vangen Church (Norwegian: Vangen kyrkje) is the main parish church in Aurland Municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is located in the village of Aurlandsvangen, at the end of the Aurlandsfjorden. The church is part of the Vangen parish in the Indre Sogn deanery in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, stone church, which is in early Gothic style, was probably built in two stages in the 1200s. There is a foundation stone in the church on which the date 2 May 1202 is inscribed. The church was restored both in 1861-1862 and in 1926
Vangen church is the largest of the seven medieval stone churches in the county, leading it to be called the Sognedomen or Sogn Cathedral.

The inhabitants are often called Hallinger (singular halling). Halling dialect (Hallingdialekt) is a dialect from Hallingdal. It belongs to a dialect group traditionally spoken in Norwegian mountainous areas.
Hallingdal has developed its own brand of the rosemaling, with a distinct symmetric style, different from the style in Telemark and Valdres. The valley also fostered a number of known painters during the 18th and 19th century.
The music of Hallingdal is traditionally dominated by the Hardanger fiddle, which was taken into use from c. 1750. The dance tunes of the valley have a distinct pattern, following three different lines of tradition, one in the south, at Nes, and two in the area of Ål. The tunes from Ål are recognized by a distinct rolling on the fiddle-bow, and the tunes are fairly old.
From early on, Hallingdal also developed a tradition for langeleik, partly replaced by the fiddle. The folk music tradition is held alive even today in the valley. After the building of the railway line Oslo-Bergen, the accordion came into use, and many fiddle tunes were adapted to the new instrument -- usually a diatonic button accordion. Hallingdal is the only area where the old fiddle music were adapted like this in local tradition.
Halling is the name of an old folk dance that is traditionally used in Norway. Each dancer is alone, in contrast to the more common couple's dances. The climax of the dance is known as thrown Halling, where the goal is to kick down a hat from a stick. The dance is often called Lausdans meaning loose in Hallingdal and Valdres, but known as the Halling in most other valleys.
The parents of Norwegian romanticist painter Hans Gude lived in Hallingdal until 1852, and Gude painted many of his works there.

Trollpikken
Trollpikken (the Troll's Dick) is a rock formation in Eigersund municipality, in Norway, between Kjervall and Veshovda. A rock jutting out from a cliff face to a height of almost 12 metres (39 ft) resembles an erect penis. In June 2017, the rock was severed using power tools; it was reattached the following month after a crowdfunding campaign.
The local tourist board was discussing using Trollpikken to draw tourists in a similar manner to Trolltunga (the troll's tongue) and Preikestolen (the preacher's pulpit) by providing parking when on June 24, 2017, joggers discovered that the approximately 10-tonne (9.8-long-ton; 11-short-ton) formation had been severed using power tools. 226,000 kroner was raised online to reattach it using a crane assembled on-site; a contractor told a Norwegian TV station, We have the Viagra it takes. It was successfully reattached on July 7, using a combination of cement, glue and metal fittings. By late that month, parking and signs had been provided and NRK reported that at least one suspect had been arrested for the vandalism.

Norway 2017 - Blood Road ( Blodveien)
he Blood Road (Blodveien) is a route northeast of Rognan in the municipality of Saltdal in Nordland county, Norway that was built by prisoners during the Second World War. The route was a new section of Norwegian National Road 50 between Rognan and Langset on the east side of Saltdal Fjord (Saltdalsfjorden), where there was a ferry service before the war. The specific incident that gave the road its name was a cross of blood that was painted on a rock cutting in June 1943. The blood came from a prisoner that was shot along the route, and the cross was painted by his brother.
2017 students and officials from the Republic of Serbia and the Kingdom of Norway honored the fallen fighters from Secod World War.
Most important is that we made a lot of friendships on this trip.
