The mountainroad between Aurland and Lærdal is normally open from the 1st of June to approx. 15th of October. From Aurland to the viewpoint- Stegastein (7,5 km), the road is open all year. The crossing Aurland - Lærdal- Aurlandsfjellet is 48 km and the highest point 1306 m a.s.l.
The road was opened in 1967 and its forerunner was a construction access road. The road runs from Lærdalsøyri to Aurlandsvangen over the mountains and the highest point is 1,306 metres above sea level. The road is closed in the winter and snow lies on the mountain throughout large parts of the summer, so the name “the snow road” is truly befitting.
Old road from Aurland-Lærdal in western Norway is NOT yet open, - we tested it!
Arvid and me the day before the SIV course in paragliding. We drove past the takeoff over Aurland on the old road from Aurland to Lærdal. A few kilometers further up the valley the road was closed. Definitely. But we just had to test to be sure.... :-D The rest of the 40km road, reaching altitudes of 1300-1400 meters usually is not opened until sometime in June, due to large amounts of snow. This year, however the snow amount is less than usual.

Südnorwegen ist die Heimat des norwegischen Sommers und bekannt für eine felsige Küste und kleine Küstenstädtchen mit weißen Holzhäusern.
Mittelnorwegen wird auch Trøndelag genannt. Hier treffen Geschichte und Kulturerbe, Lachsflüsse und freundliche Menschen aufeinander.

Dangerous & Exhilarating Mountain Road Drives, Norway (Stegastien) Old Snow Road
One of the Super Narrow and most Dangerous roads to drive on ! This was the road that connected Oslo to Bergen, before the Aurland Tunnel was built (second longest in the world). Also called as The Snow Road this video captures the descent from the view point to Aurland , Norway. This is one place where the drive is as scary as the view from the top! Hope you enjoy it
