Bagby Hot Springs - Oregon
Bagby Hot Springs is an easy hike and well worth the effort. I wish we had made this trip more than just the one time. Some day, I would like to visit Bagby with snow on the ground all around the spring.
Bagby Hot Springs - The Source
Bagby Hot Springs is a thermal spring heated by volcanic activity close to the surface. It is a short 30 minute drive from the Little Fan where we camp. Then comes a 1.5 mile, uphill hike from the parking area to the springs. Luckily, when you're done, it's all downhill back to the car! I get up there several times a year - it's one of my most treasured places to visit.
Nearly a century ago, the site was improved with all natural tubs and buildings made from surrounding resources. The hot water from the springs flows into a trough system made from carved out logs. Two bridges were built along the hike from the parking area to the springs. One has since been rebuilt, as well as some of the buildings due to a fire. There is no elecricity or modern plumbing, and camping is not allowed in the area.
It is maintained by an all volunteer group called Friends of Bagby, and they get together once or twice a year to spend a weekend fixing it up. The rest of the time, the only people you will see up there are other campers and hikers.
This is the main spring. Water comes out at around 140 degrees. It flows at around 24 gallons per minute to the wooden tubs via hollowed out logs. In this video, you can see where the natural rock of the spring joins the carved out log that leads the water to the tubs downhill.
