Cowra Council and UNIC Canberra Partner for World Peace Day and Celebrate Human Rights Anniversary
Video Number Two: World Peace Day
Cowra Council in New South Wales, Australia organised a fabulous event for World Peace Day incorporating the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human rights.
Students from the region learnt about human rights and put together this video interviewing the Cowra Council Mayor and Deputy Mayor about the day. We worked with them and had a great time.
The project is part of our overall campaign to talk about human rights in rural Australia.
Thanks to Cowra Council for your support. Loved working with you also Gooloogong Public School, Cowra High School, Cowra Public School DEC, Redbend Catholic College, Cowra Youth Council, Australian Chapter of the World Peace Bell Association - Cowra, St Raphael's Catholic School Cowra, Rotary Club Of Cowra and anyone else we have not mentioned there were so many people who joined in on the day!

Bush poet Carol Heuchan and hip-hop rap artist Joelistics join HG Nelson in this regional NSW hub, learning about the WWII Japanese POW Camp and the ongoing impact of Japanese culture on the town. Carol is touched by the stories of the Japanese war-cemetery, while Joelistics takes a different path, finding poetic inspiration from the day-to-day existence of the local youth.

Ringing The World Peace Bell and Touching Stuff
I looked at some stuff and rang the peace bell.
I've wanted to ring the peace bell for a long time now .
The asteroid is from that large Arizona crater you might have seen.
During the aftermath of World War 2 a Japanese individual Chiyoji Nakagawa, former Mayor of Uwajima in Shikoku, presented a token of peace to the United Nations. It took the form of a large bell, fashioned from a bell typically seen in larger temples throughout Japan.
There, the story might have ended. But in 1982 a World Peace Bell Association was formed with co-operation from ambassadors representing 128 nations. The Association was charged with promoting a world free from the evils of nuclear war, and presenting replica World Peace Bells to the nations of the world.. As was the case with the original, replicas are made from the donated coins of United Nations member countries.
At present there are 21 World Peace Bells in 17 countries. Four are in Japan. Coins to manufacture the bells have been donated by 103 United Nations member countries, including New Zealand.
The Christchurch World Peace Bell is now housed in a pavillion located in the Botanic Gardens. Plans are being developed for it to become the focal point of a specially developed Peace Walk.

Documentary Workshop - Cowra Canowindra Civilian Internment Arts Program

Documentation of documentary making workshops with David Hansen and Bruce Ryan held in July 2013.
Participants learned the entire process of documentary making from professional documentary makers, including story boarding, interviewing, visual & sound recording and editing. Since, the participants and facilitators have been working as the Civilian Internee Documentary Team to document other arts workshops as part of the Cowra Canowindra Civilian Internment Arts Program, creating art videos and working on a documentary about civilian internment in Australia during WW2.

The Cowra--Canowindra Civilian Internment Arts Project is a series of arts workshops in performance and story-telling involving community youth artists, youth arts workers/ artists and cultural organizations from Cowra, Canowindra, Bathurst and visiting professional artists in residence.The workshops results will be presented during Cowra Civilian Internment Program, Festival of International Understanding (March 2014 ) and 70th Anniversary of Cowra Breakout Commemorations (August 2014). The project aims to further Cowra's community heritage of heralding peace and reconciliation, and to shed light on the little known history of civilian internment in Australia during WW2.
