Film Collection Online: DPR Highlights - Australian Army
A recent addition to the Australian War Memorials film collection available online is a number of documentaries made by/or on behalf of Defence Public Relations during the 1970s and 1980s. The films highlight new equipment, different aspects of service life, operations and training as well as civil assistance activities of the period. These subjects are combined with up-beat contemporary music (or classical music in the army’s case) to provide an exciting and dramatic atmosphere for the subject at hand.
Three short clips have been made to provide a sample of the material as it relates to the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Tanks and gun for Australian War Memorial DPR/TV/1583
A British tank and an American tank, of types crewed by Australians during WW2 - and an Australian manufactured anti-aircraft gun, will be officially handed to the Australian War Memorial on Saturday (November 10 1973). The American tank, a General Stuart, was found rusting at Buna in Papua New Guinea. The British tank, a Matilda, was retrieved from a firing range at Singleton. The anti-aircraft gun, a 40 millimetre Bofors, was obtained from ordnance stocks. The Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Sir Mervyn Brogan, will officially hand over the presentations to Lieutenant General Sir Edmund Herring, who is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the War Memorial. The Director of Armour, Colonel W. J. Gordon, and Colonel R. J. Gardner, representing the Director of Artillery, from Army Headquarters, will be present, with representatives of armoured and artillery associations. One man present for whom the General Stuart tank will have vivid memories will be Mr Jack Lattimore, who lost a leg when a Japanese gun scored on his tank at Buna. The tank Mr Latimore commanded then has since gone to the United States as an exhibit at the Admiral Nimmitz Centre. Another ex tankie who will be present on Saturday is Mr Norman Bent. The presentation Matilda tank has been named Bull Terrier, after the Matilda commanded by Mr Bent when with the 1st Armoured Regiment (AIF). Mr Don McFarlane, who was Mr Bent's gunner-operator in the original Bull Terrier, will also be present. The Matilda was British designed, and 2,987 were built between 1939 and 1943. Australia acquired 450, which were fought by the 1st Australian Army Tank Battalion, at Sattelberg, in New Guinea; the 2nd/4th Australian Armoured Regiment, at Bougainville and Wewak; the 2nd/9th Australian Armoured Regiment at Tarakan, Brunei Bay and Labuan; and the 1st Armoured Regiment (AIF) at Balikpapan. The General Stuart was designed at the United States Rock Island Arsenal and 13,859 were built between 1941 and 1943. Australia acquired 400, and they saw service in Syria with the 6th and 7th Divisional Cavalry Regiments AIF. In December 1942 Stuarts of the 2nd/6th Armoured Regiment were moved to Buna to support Australian infantry. Although the environment was the complete antithesis to that for which the Stuart had been specifically designed, the Australian crews fought the tanks with skill and courage and prevented many Australian casualties. They established techniques still employed during infantry/armour operations in close country. The Bofors anti-aircraft gun was Swedish designed and almost all combatants in the European theatre used it during WW2. Australian anti-aircraft gunners used British made Bofors in the Western Desert. Manufacture of the guns was commenced in Australia in 1941 at the Government Ordnance Factory at Maribyrnong, Vic, and 290 were produced. The presentation gun was manufactured in 1943, and issued to the 2nd/1st Composite Anti-Aircraft Regiment, which used it in action in Borneo in 1945.

Conducted at Kokoda Army barracks in Canungra, Queensland, Chauvel Cup 17 included both mounted and dismounted activities seeking to push the soldiers and junior officers of the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment to their limit. Each scenario tested their skills and resilience and encouraged strong decision making, which in turn helps Army develop superior knowledge, skills and decision making in any environment.

Troops prepare for Vietnam DPR/TV/364
Officers and men of the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, based at Holsworthy, NSW, are making last minute preparations for movement to Viet Nam. The 5th Battalion was named recently as part of the 4,500 Army and RAAF Task Force which will be on active service in Vietnam by the end of June. At Holsworthy, members of the 5th Battalion start the day with Company parades and weapon inspection watched closely by the Regimental Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Les Foale of Guilford, NSW. Company parades over the troops settle down to the serious business of getting vehicles and equipment ready for the move to Viet Nam. Craftsman Bert Trappel of Dungog, NSW, a vehicle mechanic with the Battalion completes final maintenance on a landrover. Lance Corporal Geoff Rummer of Bicton, Western Australia, stows boots, helmet and clothing into his kit bag for the trip. Patrol pack and jungle equipment is throughly checked and tested for comfort. Meanwhile unit stores and equipment are crated and packaged and checked at a growing stores compound in the unit area. At the Regimental Aid Post a woman doctor of the NSW Department of Health, Doctor Margret Jones of Woollahra, Sydney, gives final injections to Battalion troops. Outside, a group of soldiers are given final revision on latest Army weapons which they will use on operations against the Viet Cong in Vietnam. They include the M79 Grenade Launcher, the M16 Armalite Rifle and the M72 Rocket Launcher. Briefing the troops is Corporal Henry Baird of Cessnock, NSW. At the small arms range other troops practice with Self Loading Rifle watched by the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel John Warr. At the same time troops test the 9mm pistol and Owen Machine Carbine. To complete the day troops of the 5th Battalion move out in patrol to test immediate contact drills and tropical warfare techniques which will be used against the Viet Cong. Success on operations against the Viet Cong in the swamps and jungles of Viet Nam depends on patrolling skill and tropical warfare expertise. this has been proved time and again by members of the 1st Battalion which will be relieved in June this year.
