Stand up for Australian Ugg Boots
In a case that is a real life global version of The Castle, a Sydney-based ugg boot maker is being sued in a US court.
That Sydney-based ugg boot maker is Eddie Oygur – founder and owner of the family business Australian Leather – who has been making ugg boots since the early 1990s. Eddie employs 40 people in Australia and makes around 50,000 pairs of ugg boots in Australia using Australian sheepskin.
The company trying to bring Eddie down is a US footwear company, Deckers Outdoor Corporation, with a turnover of more than $2.4 billion and who manufactures all of their boots in China and Vietnam – not one boot is made in Australia.
They’re seeking a global injunction to prevent Eddie from exporting using the term ‘ugg’ anywhere outside of Australia or New Zealand.
We all know that ugg boots are typically Australian and the product and name were invented right here in Australia. They’re not just part of our culture; they create local jobs and export earnings.
This form of legal bullying by Deckers has already forced other companies to stop exporting ugg boots and in another case from even using the words ‘ugg boots’. And some even had to close down.
The unprecedented court action, if successful, will mean Eddie has to shut down Australian Leather. The orders would include multi-million dollar punitive damages and all of Australian Leather’s ugg boot stock be delivered to Deckers for destruction.
Eddie is clearly facing a massive legal battle in the US District Court which has already begun. The case has already cost him $500,000 and is expected to cost hundreds of thousands more.
