The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war.
The Hall of Memory
The Hall of Memory.
A powerful documentary paying homage to the Australian War Memorial’s Hall of Memory with its stained glass windows, mosaics and Byzantine dome has been released by the Memorial. Presented by Memorial Director Dr Brendan Nelson the film explores the stunning designs of artist Napier Waller OBE CMG and explains the intent behind the 15 stained glass panels, each of which symbolises one of the quintessential qualities displayed by Australians in war.
The documentary draws upon archival material, including photos and documents held by the Memorial woven together with interviews and cinematic footage, filmed by award-winning cinematographer Andy Taylor ACS.
Produced by renowned journalist and film-maker Max Uechtritz and scored by songwriter and record producer Garth Porter, The Hall of Memory was made possible through a financial donation from Michael and Katherine Ribot de Bressac.

After leaving Adelaide we flew over to see my father in Canberra, we spent a full day there seeing some of the things the capital city has to offer. We started by heading up to the top of Mount Ainsle where you can get a great panoramic view of The city. We then visited the War Memorial before heading over to the old and new Parliament Houses. We finished the day by watching the sunset from the Telstra Tower up on Black Mountain.

Our Continuing Story
The Memorial commemorates our living history — for every veteran and for every Australian.
The time has come to modernise and expand our galleries and buildings so we can tell the continuing story of Australia’s contemporary contribution to a better world through the eyes of those who have served in modern conflicts; connecting the spirit of our past, present and future for generations to come.
Our Development Project plans were launched on Monday 18 November 2019 by the Prime Minister, the Hon. Scott Morrison MP.
The project includes a new southern entrance, refurbishment of the main building, a new Anzac Hall connected to the main building via a glazed link, an extension to the Bean Building, and public realm works. Sensitively connected to the existing landscape, the detailed plans will ensure the heritage façade remains unchanged.

The Australian War Memorial is Australia's national memorial to the members of its armed forces and supporting organisations who have died or participated in wars involving the Commonwealth of Australia, and some conflicts involving personnel from the Australian colonies prior to Federation. The memorial includes an extensive national military museum. The Australian War Memorial was opened in 1941, and is widely regarded as one of the most significant memorials of its type in the world.[citation needed]
The Memorial is located in Australia's capital, Canberra. It is the north terminus of the city's ceremonial land axis, which stretches from Parliament House on Capital Hill along a line passing through the summit of the cone-shaped Mount Ainslie to the northeast. No continuous roadway links the two points, but there is a clear line of sight from the front balcony of Parliament House to the War Memorial, and from the front steps of the War Memorial back to Parliament House.
The Australian War Memorial consists of three parts: the Commemorative Area (shrine) including the Hall of Memory with the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier, the Memorial's galleries (museum) and Research Centre (records). The Memorial also has an outdoor Sculpture Garden. The Memorial is currently open daily from 10am until 5pm, except on Christmas Day.
Many people include Anzac Parade as part of the Australian War Memorial because of the Parade's physical design leading up to the War Memorial, but it is maintained separately by the National Capital Authority (NCA).

This honor guard, known as the Catafalque Party group of four guards, performs its drill, held at the Australian War Memorial's Stone of Remembrance, in the country's capital, Canberra, on Anzac Day, April 25, 2019. April 25th is of particular reverence for the people of Australia and New Zealand, as it commemorates and pays tribute to those serving, and whom have served, in the military branches of both countries, past and present: Lest we forget. Visit to the Australian War Memorial
During my travels in April 2012 I visited the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. This was my third time there, my last visit was around 15 years ago. The memorial has increased in size since my last visit, and there are more exhibits than before. But the atmosphere is as I remembered, this is truly a special place.
I believe every Australian should visit here. If you get the chance to do so, don't pass it up. Most people find that they can easily spend the best part of a day seeing everything, so allow yourself plenty of time.
This video is just a glimpse of all there is to experience, it is basically a walk through. There is no commentary, as I want the images and sounds of the memorial to speak for themselves. The only thing I have added post production is some soft background music.

Artist’s impression of the future Australian War Memorial
Located in line of sight of Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial reminds the nation of the cost of war, and the effects of service. It tells stories of love and friendship, selflessness, courage, and endurance. It is also a place where veterans and their families are able to come to terms with what they have done and the impact it has had on them.
To ensure that the Memorial can continue to honour those Australians who lost their lives in war, a future plan has been developed. Watch this video to see an artist’s impression of the future Australian War Memorial.

Car Parking:
4 hour limits apply between 7.30am - 6.00pm (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays). If you need to stay longer, see the Front Desk for a temporary parking pass.
Underground parking is available off Fairbairn Avenue; above-ground parking is available off Treloar Crescent.
Coach parking is available on Treloar Crescent and behind Anzac Hall.
