Volunteers help to build the Buddhist temple in Canada 加拿大義工幫忙建佛堂
This video shows the vigorous volunteer work during the Great Jewelled Hall expansion project. Many difficult tasks, such as moving heavy objects, were overcome by the team of diligent volunteers, including Sangha and laymen. As each volunteer contributes one's effort and talent to build this magnificent new hall, one is also expanding the Bodhimanda in one's own mind ground. The new hall is accomplished by the collaboration of many people's hard work, which in turn provides a great place for many more to cultivate in the future.

Avatamsaka Monastery Inauguration Ceremony: Opening Ceremony 華嚴聖寺開光大典 開幕典禮
After four years of work by the community, Avatamsaka Monastery's Great Jewel Hall is completed and celebrates its opening on September 9, 2017.
Avatamaka Monastery is a branch of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association in Alberta Canada, which first arrived in the city in 1985. It moved to the current building located at the edge of the downtown district in 1996. This building was originally constructed to support more than three additional stories. The Great Jewel Hall was built on the top of the existing three-story building. It is graced with three Avatamsaka Sages Statues as well as 10,000 hand-made buddha statues. The 10,000 hand-made buddha statues are in three different sizes. The display of the statues represents a cosmos of infinite realms upon realms, mutually containing one another. The petals of lotus flower, the painted sketches of lotus flower, and three chandeliers complete the Great Jewell Hall.
Volunteers from more than two dozen countries came forward to support this project. It would be mission impossible without the dedication and diligence of the volunteers.
On Sep 9, 2017, more than 1,100 people participated this celebration. Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of the City of Calgary, appreciated the service and contributions to build the Great Jewel Hall, which was considered as part of making the community stronger and better. “I hope Avatamska Monastery will remain blessed, central of faith, central of the community for many many generations”, said by Nenshi. Rev. Heng Sure as the President of Dhama Realm Buddhist Association invited everyone, who speaks different language or comes from a different background, to Avatamsaka Monastery for cultivation in order to attain the ultimate state of wisdom and compassion.

Avatamsaka Monastery Inauguration Ceremony: Inauguration 華嚴聖寺開光大典 開光
After four years of work by the community, Avatamsaka Monastery's Great Jewel Hall is completed and celebrates its opening on September 9, 2017.
The Inauguration of images is also called opening the light (開光) for the Buddha Images. The first part was to pay respect to Three Jewels. The second part was to open the light for individual images and invite the buddha or bodhisattva to enter the Hall. The last part was to transfer merit.
During the second part, Rev. Heng Sure led the recitation of the Auspicious verse and a mantra for three times. Subsequently, the monks held the mirror toward the image and said “Kai (開)” to open the light on the image officially. (There is a Chinese Character “吽” written on the mirror.) Lastly, Rev. Heng Sure recited a verse to praise the buddha or bodhisattva the image represents.

Avatamsaka Monastery 30th Anniversary: High Meal Offering 華嚴聖寺三十週年慶典 上堂齋
On September 10, 2017, DRBA branch monastery at Calgary: Avatamsaka Monastery celebrates its 30th anniversary and the completion of the Great Jewel Hall. As part of the celebration, upon the request of the12 devoted lay persons, Rev. Heng Sure presented a special Dharma talk according to the traditional convention called High Meal Offering 上堂齋.
The High Meal Offering is a formal request for the Dharma Host to speak Dharma. Venerable Master Hsuan Hua said, “This kind of ceremony is very important to the monasteries.” During the past 30 years, the High Meal Offering occurred three times at Avatamaksa Monastery.
Buddhist practitioners makes offering of four kinds (food, clothes, bedding & medicine) to the monastics to sustain their lives and cultivation. Different kinds of food offerings, 上堂齋、羅漢齋、吉祥齋、如意齋 etc. can be made according to their conditions and resolve to tie affinities with the great assembly. This 上堂齋is the highest offering to request a high monk to speak Dharma for the great assembly. With the utmost sincerity and respect to the Dharma, the benefactors make the request and would be benefited by the Dharma to advance in the path of their cultivation.
First, the twelve special donors requested Rev. Heng Sure to speak the dharma from the Patriarch hall. Rev. Heng Sure was preceded by four monks respectively holding a white whisk, a scepter, a tin staff, and a bowl, and followed by an attendant holding a sitting cloth. After lighting incense, the Dharma Master took his seat in the Great Jewel Hall. The cantor, Dharma Master Heng Yang, sang, “The multitude of dragons and elephants in Buddhism should contemplate the foremost truth/法門龍象眾,當觀第一義,” after which Rev. Heng Sure spoke the Dharma for the donors.
“Wisdom knows no east or west. Suffering and misery are universal. Who can show us the road to freedom from pain? The buddha, the awakened human being, found the door that opens to a realm beyond some sorrow. Holding that door open for us even today in Calgary, Venerable Master Hsuan Hua taught us how to end suffering for ourselves and how to share the path for every living being who can hear - the real Dharma that carries us from endless affliction to freedom. What is that method? Watch our thoughts, the way the gardener watches greens sprouts in the spring time. “
