Avatar Grove || The World's Gnarliest Tree || Vancouver Island, B C
Avatar Grove is located just outside of Port Renfrew, B.C. on Vancouver Island. This beautiful, mysterious and magical old-growth forest features western cedars and Douglas firs that soar into the sky and need four to five people, arms outstretched, to span their trunks! Somewhere within the grove is 'Canada's Gnarliest Tree', an old western cedar with a massive growth on its trunk!
Join Marti from 'Down the Wrabbit Hole Travel' as she and her family explore the woods on a rainy day, discovering the strange 'Gnarliest Tree' and other interesting woodland finds! To read more about Avatar Grove and how to get there yourself, visit her blog post about it at:

BIGGEST TREE EVER - CATHEDRAL GROVE (B.C. TRIP DAY 5)
Today we spent most of the day traveling, but we did get to stop by some amazing spots, namely Cathedral Grove which has some HUGE douglas furs. This one was over 800 years old and taller than we could see to the top.

This Easter weekend we decided to take a daytrip from Victoria BC around the Pacific Marine Circle Route from Victoria BC. This time we decided to follow the route counterclockwise and started out through Goldstream, the Malahat lookout points and stopped in Duncan at Garage cafe for coffee and cinnamon buns. We continued on our drive across the island through Lake Cowichan. Our next stop was Fairy Lake.
Our main destination this day was Avatar Grove. We managed to drive our small compact Yaris on the 1 km of logging roads up to the old growth forest. The short hike up to the gnarliest tree in Canada is totally worth it. The energy in that forest is incredibly calming and healing. There are a lot of stairs on this hike and at this time of year after all the rains of winter, the trails can be quite slippery, so although the hike is short, the elevation and terrain may not make it for everybody.
From Avatar Grove we drove into Port Renfrew to find food. We stopped at Bridgeman's restaurant adjacent to the marina with incredible views of the water and the mountains. We saw sea lions, and seals while we were eating our dinner. One of the most fun things about this great place to eat is that you can bring the fish that you catch and they will prepare fish and chips for you. It is a gorgeous location and we will definitely be back.
At this point, we had definitely run out of steam, despite a good dinner. You can do Pacific Marine Trail in one day, but I would recommend three. We missed out on all the beaches close to Port Renfrew: Botanical Beach, Sombrio Beach, China Beach, Mystic Beach. We didn´t even stop at Shirley Delicious.
We did stop at Sheringham Lighthouse in Shirley, just outside of Sooke to close out the vlog. It is a beautiful location and a shot hike from a new CRD trail designed to protect private property. Interesting. This makes it less accessible for individuals who cannot walk that far.
On this trip of Marine Circle Route, we entirely missed all the stops in Sooke: Whiffin Spit, Sooke Potholes and East Sooke Park.
Please thank Tim for editing this vlog by giving it a thumbs up and put I love the Marine Circle Route in the comments. Thanks for watching.

Avatar Grove in Port Renfrew, BC
Over the May long weekend, 2010, after hearing many people talk about this new found grove of old and very large trees that are slated to be logged, we decided to check it out ourselves.
We started from Muir Creek located about 15 minutes west of Sooke and then proceeded towards Port Renfrew. The instructions we had were pretty clear how to get there, so we had no problems finding it.
We did have a hard time getting through the forest though since Mrs. DiscoverSooke is 8 months pregnant, so we just stayed to the lower part of the grove.
It doesn't matter what your stand is on the logging industry, it should just go without saying that trees this old and this size should remain standing.
After we spent an hour in the forest, we decided that we would head back to Sooke by taking the Pacific Marine Circle route through Duncan and Cowichan Bay.

The Avatar Grove and Canada's Gnarliest Tree!
***NOTE: The Avatar Grove is now protected as of 2012 (this video clip was made in 2011) BUT most of our old-growth forests are endangered. Sign the petition: AncientForestPetition.com THANKS to the tens of thousands of people who wrote letters, signed petitions, and rallied to save the Avatar Grove! At the time of the making of this video in 2011, the Avatar Grove was still slated to fall - but a broad-based campaign led by the Ancient Forest Alliance (AncientForestAlliance.org) and joined by our allies in the Port Renfrew Chamber of Commerce, resulted in the area's protection in early 2012. See SPECTACULAR photo gallery here: For directions to visit go to:
