Abdera is a municipality and a former major Greek polis on the coast of Thrace. The ancient polis is to be distinguished from the municipality, which was named in its honor. The polis lay 17 km east-northeast of the mouth of the Nestos River, almost directly opposite the island of Thasos. It was a colony placed in previously unsettled Thracian territory, not then a part of Hellas, during the age of Greek colonization. The city that developed from it became of major importance in ancient Greece. After the 4th century AD it declined, contracted to its acropolis, and was abandoned, never to be reoccupied, except for archaeologists. Meanwhile, life went on as the changing population settled in other communities in the region. One named Polystylus changed its name to Abdera. In 2011 the municipality of Abdera was synoecized from three previous municipalities comprising a number of modern settlements.. The ancient site remains in it as a ruin. It now lies in the Xanthi regional unit of Thrace, Greece. The municipality of Abdera has 19,005 inhabitants . The seat of the municipality is the town Genisea.

Avdira is the home of many great Greek philosophers, such as Demokritus and Protagoras and a very important ancient town, founded in the 7th century BC. Avdira is located on the coast of Thrace, 21 km from Xanthi. The remarkable ancient town has big walls, an acropolis, two ports, a theater and houses arranged in blocks. The findings of the excavation are located in the town's archaeological museum. At the seaside of the town there are beautiful sandy organized beaches with crystal clear waters. Every summer, at the end of July the Democritus cultural events are held, with exhibitions, theatrical performances, sports events and delicious local dishes are prepared by the housewives of the area.

Archaeological site of Avdira

Archaeological site of Avdira, in the cape of Bouloustra includes the northern and southern precincts, the acropolis of the ancient city and its cemeteries, dating from the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods.

Place in the northern precinct preserved sections of the wall and one room buildings prior Clazomenia city of Asia Minor, 7th century BC., parts of the wall of Tiion, the 6th-5th century BC, boathouse of the same era, located on the northeastern edge of the harbor before the region become a land of silting, the ruins of a sanctuary of Dimitra and Daughter, dating to the 6th-4th century BC., and the Hellenistic cemetery.

The main excavated and visited part of the site is close to the current port. This is the western part of the southern precinct of the city, which distinguished the western wall, gate towers, roads and houses.

The first buildings that the visitor meets before entering the ancient city are houses of imperial times, that do not follow the Hippodamio system, the royal Christian cemetery of Polystylo, and luxurious bath ruins of imperial times.

Apart from open to visitors parts of the area there are much more excavated within a certain distance between them, but at none of them the excavation has been completed.

At the southern end rises the acropolis of the ancient city, where only part of the ancient wall is preserved, while the western end, the sea, the breakwater of the harbor is distinguished.
The second port of the city, eastern, is located on the northeast side of the southern precinct. Here also distinguished the jetty and warehouses.

Although the image of the ancient city is quite good, especially with regard to private residences, shops, walls and tombs of the inhabitants of the Byzantine of Polystylo, no public buildings have been identified.

The only public building that we know is the theater, which is located between the northern and southern wall, on a hillside, but it is so damaged that cannot be visited.
