090: Ancient Stones of Avebury (Avebury Stone Circle and Avebury Manor)
NORTH WESSEX DOWNS WALK FEATURING AVEBURY, THE STONE CIRCLE AND AVEBURY MANOR AND GARDENS
Ancient Stones of Avebury”
Filmed 5th September 2017
Running time: 20 minutes
During a visit to the North Wessex Downs in Wiltshire I go to the fascinating Avebury with its ancient stone circle. I plan to do a circular walk starting from the village, but the wet weather makes me go against the idea in the end. However, I still enjoy my day in Avebury very much, which includes a visit to the local manor and gardens, and sneaking in a quick half of local ale in the village’s thatched inn…..
Filmed in Avebury in the North Wessex Downs in the county of Wiltshire. Locations include the stone circle and Avebury Manor.

Avebury, National Trust
The National Trust wanted to give visitors an insight into the personality of Alexander Keiller, one of Britain's first archaeologists and the man who surveyed Avebury and then took up the challenge of re-standing the stones in the 1920s. The archives at Avebury inspired three distinct script and visual methods to show the passions of this man.
Secrets of the Avebury Landscape: Devil's Den Dolmen
Explore this rarely visited site on the Mysteries of England Tour in July 2018 with author Hugh Newman and ancient symbolism researcher Jj Ainsworth -
Devil's Den dolmen is located near Avebury in Wiltshire. Megalithomaniac Hugh Newman investigates the site with Dave and Rob from and includes exclusive aerial footage of the site. It was once a mighty long barrow and has several legends associated with it. A local tradition said that if water was poured into hollows on the capstone, a demon would come in the night and drink it. This burial chamber was reconstructed in 1921. All that remains are two standing stones and a capstone with two fallen stones underneath. This was originally placed in the south-eastern end of a long mound which was described in the 1920s as being around 230ft long.

Avebury Village In Wiltshire.
Avebury is a village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. The village is about 5.5 miles (9 km) west of Marlborough and 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Devizes. Much of the village is encircled by the prehistoric monument complex also known as Avebury. The parish also includes the small villages of Avebury Trusloe and Beckhampton, and the hamlet of West Kennett.
The village pub, The Red Lion, a Grade II listed farmhouse from the late 16th century, claims to be the only pub in the world to be enclosed by a stone circle. It was built around the 86 foot deep village well which has been covered over with glass and now features as a dining table. An inscription around the well claims that at least one villager died after falling down it.

Avebury
Avebury (/ˈeɪvbri/) is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, in southwest England. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest stone circle in Europe. It is both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary Pagans.
Constructed over several hundred years in the 3rd millennium BC,[1] during the Neolithic, or 'New Stone Age', the monument comprises a large henge (a bank and a ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the centre of the monument. Its original purpose is unknown, although archaeologists believe that it was most likely used for some form of ritual or ceremony. The Avebury monument was a part of a larger prehistoric landscape containing several older monuments nearby, including West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill. For more info visit:

The Village of Avebury and it's Stone Circle - Avebury, Wiltshire, England

Avebury Stone Circles:
Avebury (/ˈeɪvbri/) is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, in southwest England. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest stone circle in Europe. It is both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary pagans.

By the Iron Age, the site had been effectively abandoned, with some evidence of human activity on the site during the Roman occupation. During the Early Middle Ages, a village first began to be built around the monument, which eventually extended into it. In the Late Medieval and Early Modern periods, locals destroyed many of the standing stones around the henge, both for religious and practical reasons. The antiquarians John Aubrey and William Stukeley however took an interest in Avebury during the 17th century, and recorded much of the site before its destruction. Archaeological investigation followed in the 20th century, led primarily by Alexander Keiller, who oversaw a project which reconstructed much of the monument.
Avebury is owned and managed by the National Trust, a charitable organisation who keep it open to the public.[2] It has been designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument,[3] as well as a World Heritage Site, in the latter capacity being seen as a part of the wider prehistoric landscape of Wiltshire known as Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites.[4]

Avebury - Neolithic Site - England
Avebury is the site of an ancient monument consisting of a large henge, several stone circles, stone avenues and barrows, surrounding the village of Avebury in the English county of Wiltshire. It is one of the finest and largest Neolithic monuments in Europe, about 5,000 years old. Although older than the megalithic stages of Stonehenge 32 kilometres (20 mi) to the south, the two monuments are broadly contemporary overall. Avebury is roughly midway between the towns of Marlborough and Calne, just off the main A4 road on the northbound A4361 towards Wroughton. Avebury is a Scheduled Ancient Monument,a World Heritage Site,[2] and a National Trust property. ( source Wikipedia )

Wiltshire - Avebury, Silbury, West Kennet pre-historic history, White Horses etc
White Horses, Stone Circles, Burial Chambers......why would you want to visit this stuff?
.....well partly because it is our history but also because it takes you off the route that every tourist takes and shows you something off the beaten track !
Wiltshire has many historic and prehistoric sites like Stonehenge but the area around Avebury is particularly interesting. Avebury itself has a large number of standing stones and the circle of earthworks around the village is the largest in Europe - it was built 5500 years ago.
Silbury Hill is just a mile away and is the largest man-made hill in Europe, built for we know not what, 3500 years ago.
West Kennet Long Barrow is close by, just a 15 minute walk across the fields and is an impressive burial chamber - again 5500 years old.
Wiltshire's White Horses were carved into the chalk hillside - mostly 200-350 years ago usually to commemorate something or just to show off!
The Devizes White Horse is the last to be cut - for the Millennium and the Uffington White Horse, nearby in Oxfordshire, is the oldest and thought to have been cut about 3500 years ago and is only completely visible from above - spooky !!
So a day out to see these iconic Wiltshire areas of interest will take you into beautiful villages and through the beautiful Marlborough and Berkshire Downs (Hills) - an area that you would not have seen had you just visited the locations where you can expect to see throngs of other tourists!!
A big part of what I like to see is to show people the things that are on their bucket list and then to show them the places they know nothing about but which I know will delight!

A Walk Around Avebury in Wiltshire
Today I am in Avebury with Marq English. Avebury is a small village set inside the mysterious stone circle and earthworks built by our prehistoric ancestors. In this episode Marq and I are exploring the grounds of the old manor house, the National Trust property, the church and church yard and some of the fabulous buildings to be found there.
In our next video, we shall look at the magnificent standing stones.
