Mexico Kayaking 2018 - Steep and Stout x Boof Storks
A trip to Tlapacoyan, Mexico wraps up my 2018 kayaking year. Louis Norris and I traveled to Veracruz, and stayed with Aventurec during our 10 day stay - they helped us out with everything, from food and living accommodations, to kayak rentals and shuttles to and from the river. If you're planning on going to Veracruz to get on some classics, Aventurec is the place to be! Thanks to Antonio Reinoso Diaz for the help on showing me and Louis down on Big Banana, and Jaime Sanchez for setting up the rappel down into the gorge to run 7 Sisters!
Thanks to Levi Rhodes, Chris Ward and Terry Ward for rallying some of the runs with us, and for doing some filming!
This footage is from the Alseseca River, located 20 minutes outside of Tlapacoyan, Veracruz. Along this river are the Roadside Section, Big Banana Section, Tomata 1 and 7 Sisters, which are all featured in this video.

Rio Alseseca - Big Banana Kayaking - Veracruz, Mexico
In my 10 days in Veracruz, staying with Aventurec, I ended up running the Big Banana section 3 times. Most of this video is from the first trip on Day 2, when Antonio Reinoso led us down and showed us the lines. For Louis Norris's and my last day in Veracruz, we ran this section just the two of us.
Easily one of the coolest runs I've done to date. From Silencio to Meat Locker to Boof or Die, there are some very unique rapids that are incredibly fun.
This section was so incredible to paddle through - the hike in through the jungle, putting in at the base of Big Banana Falls, of which there are only 7 descents to date. Seeing it all in person was incredible and it was such a huge step in my kayaking career to be able to run this multiple times.

Rios and Cervezas - Mexico 2015 - Roadside Alseseca/San Pedro
The boys and I took a short trip down to the land of trash and waterfalls for New Years. While we were cut short by a back injury we still managed to get in a fun two days of boating on the Roadside section of the Alseseca River and some free falling on the San Pedro Waterfall.

Rio Alseseca Kayaking - 7 Sisters - Veracruz, Mexico
First off, a HUGE thank you to Aventurec for supplying the gear we needed to make our day on 7 sisters happen - Jaime set up the anchor, we all repelled down successfully, and had a great day. If you want to go to Mexico for a kayak trip, Aventurec is the place to be!
7 Sisters on the Alseseca is a short run in a deep canyon, that starts right at the pool of Tomata 2. To access the gorge without running Tomata 2 (maybe next time!), we had to repel down in with our boats, which was approximately 150 to 200ft. The first time I've ever rappelled down, and it was an awesome experience!
The 7 Sisters is comprised of 7 drops, all very pool-drop in nature.
1) Clean 5 foot boof
2) Semi-clean 5 foot boof with a rock that splits the landing. I have seen people have good lines going either direction of the rock at the end.
3) Awesome 15 foot boof with a semi tricky lead in. Some people get spun around/knocked by rocks on the ramp in and get spun out. Tricky to line up to start with, but awesome boof if you do line it up!
4) 5 foot boof with all the water dropping off to the right creating a shitty hole. Advice: don't scout, just charge with lots of speed from right to left and take a big right stroke at the lip, with nose pointing slightly left.
5) 10-15 foot boof that has caused a lot of swims. This one is tricky, the lip isn't clean and the hole at the bottom is pretty vicious. People get stuck behind the curtain, and there is a wall that is in play on the left side. You can portage on the right, rope boats up the rock wall, hike around for 5 minutes, and find a place to jump back in to the pool below. Next time I think I'd run it.
6) One of the cleanest 10-15 foot boofs I've had. Perfect auto boof lip, awesome aerated landing.
7) Kind of tricky, 3 foot boof into a slot drop. At these flows it was trivial, not sure if it gets harder as flows go up.
We had pretty darn low flows, this beta may change if you go into the canyon with higher flows.
Agua Blanca en Mexico
This January, 9 packrafters went to Tlapacoyan, Mexico for a little over 2 weeks. In the beginning it was Doug Demarest, Gerard Ganey, Jeremiah Phelps, Russell Nyberg and myself. We based at Aventurec while we paddled the upper roadside, roadside and big banana sections of the Alseseca River, the Tatempa, Zapotitlan and lower sections of the Filo Bobos River and the lower Jalacingo Creek. After 11 days or so Roman Dial, Roman Dial Jr., Brad Meiklejohn and Mike Curiak joined us after their trip down the Baranca Grande. We continued paddling these rivers until the end of our trip.
