Auguste Corteau presents his newly adopted puppy, Jerry
If you are Greek, I guess that you already know Auguste Corteau. If not, and you’re first hearing about him from me, then you should know that I am very anxious while writing this.
I’ll do my best to present him, and no, I won’t copy-paste anything from wikipedia apart from “Auguste Corteau (Greek: Αύγουστος Κορτώ) is the pen name of the Greek author Petros Hadjopoulos (Πέτρος Χατζόπουλος). He was born in Thessaloniki (Greece), in 1979.”
Apart from his prolific work (novels, novellas and short stories collections, children’s books, translations), Auguste Corteau is an activist, without really being one, if that makes sense. He is the type of person that may be seen as an activist, while all he does really is live his life, be himself, and talk about things few of us like to talk about publicly, with an honesty that sometimes offends the wrong people - because honesty shouldn't really be offensive to anyone.
With almost 150.000 followers on facebook, and numerous haters - it comes with the job - he touches some very delicate subjects, such as mental illness, suicide and homosexuality, with one common denominator in each and everyone of his posts: honesty (at least this is what I see).
He has been my friend for about 15 years - since I met him as the new partner of my best friend Tasos (now his husband), and what I gained from that friendship is the realization that I can be myself, that I can think, talk, and act as I want to, not as I am supposed to. I know that he has helped a lot of young people in Greece, who struggle every day in a society that discriminates and criticizes anything and anyone that is “different”, gay, bipolar, fat, handicapped, you name it, just like he helped me, and this is simply amazing.
Jerry is about to become one of the most famous dogs in Greece (not because of this video), and maybe one day he can even have a book about him! He was rescued by Save the Tails, a small group of volunteers in West Athens.
