Sur le pont d'Avignon is a French song that dates back to the 15th century!
The song tells the story of a bridge, the Pont d'Avignon, on which one dances.
Fun fact: Officially, the famous bridge in Avignon is called Pont St. Bénézet.
Another fun fact: Although the lyrics talk about dancing ON the bridge (“sur le pont”), the dance actually took place UNDER the bridge (“Sous le pont”).
Here are the lyrics of the Chorus in French, and then the English translation:
Sur le Pont d'Avignon
On y danse, On y danse
Sur le Pont d'Avignon
On y danse tous en rond
On the bridge of Avignon
We all dance there, we all dance there
On the bridge of Avignon
We all dance there in a ring
We hope you will find this tutorial useful for learning the song!

Avignon-France-City of Popes-Palatul Papilor
Often referred to as the City of Popes because of the presence of popes and antipopes from 1309 to 1423 during the Catholic schism, it is currently the largest city and capital of the département of Vaucluse. This is one of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts, its historic centre, the palace of the popes, Rocher des Doms, and the bridge of Avignon.

Viking River Cruise Provence - Viking Long Buri
Our first cruise experience! We spent an entire week aboard Viking River Cruises' Viking Long Buri, exploring the south of France. We started in Avignon, and cruised the Rhone River all the way to Lyon. Along the way, we ate amazing food on board our Viking Cruise, and also explored cute little French villages, ate loads of French cheese, and drank a LOT of French wine and champagne.
It was a fabulous week, we were also got to meet a lot of new friends aboard the Viking Buri, both guests and the amazing crew! This was a perfect way to experience our first cruise. I cannot recommend it enough.
And, be sure to watch the entire Viking River Cruise video...there's a lot of animals in this one, some of them are extremely adorable!
Overall, I was happy with the food and wine onboard our Viking River Cruise. And, there are a few reasons why I would recommend touring France on a river cruise.
First, France is a hard place to travel. Is it as hard as China? Certainly not. But, at least for us, in comparison to nearby Italy, or Spain, or even Portugal, France is hard. The language is hard.
When it comes to the cuisine, French food is not as recognizable to me as it is in Italy, where most dishes can be considered comfort foods - dishes I grew up eating. Last, France is expensive.
So, what does that mean for the French river cruise experience? Menus are in English. The staff speaks English. French dishes are on the menu, and are explained by the Chef each night. And, all of your food is included. No price tags on menus. It just made for a much more enjoyable French river cruise experience.
I am very happy we explored the South of France with Viking. It made our experience in France easy and carefree, and that much more enjoyable.
