The TAZM gang takes its first outing after arriving in Namibia - to Okapuka Game Ranch, just a bit north of Windhoek. After a vehicle breakdown we managed to get to the park and observe some real live African wildlife.

Severe water crisis in Windhoek

The run-dry date for Windhoek’s water supply is estimated to be mid-2016 if the monthly water consumption target is not met by its residents.
Currently Windhoek exceeds its monthly water consumption target by 25%. This target is based on water consumption figures from 2014.
“Sadly, Namibians woke up only when it was too late,” commented Dieter Tolke, City of Windhoek Water Demand Management Technician.
The current water crisis looming over Windhoek may have a disastrous outcome if the government’s administrative capital runs dry. “Wasting of water increases living costs and in turn decreases the socio-economic levels,” explained Tolke.
From 2000 until 2014 water demand has increased drastically by 33% due to urbanisation.
According to information provided by Tolke, during normal conditions Windhoek receives 75% of its water from dams, 20% from reclamation plants and 5% from boreholes. If all the dams run dry this will place intense strain on other sources, which translates to boreholes supplying 15% of water without running dry. The Kaarstfelt channel will only be able to supply Windhoek with 5% of water, whereas the Gammas Reclamation Plant may produce an estimated 10% of water needed. This relates to about 30% of the total water needed by Windhoek.
As of 16 November 2015, the NamWater weekly dam bulletin displayed worrying information. Compared to this week and last week Swakkoppoort Dam level decreased from 20,1% of present full capacity to 19,7%, Von Bach Dam decreased from 27,1 % to 26,3% and Omatako Dam is still empty for the last couple of months. Together these percentages indicate that the total present percentage of water available for the central region is 16,3%.
The general guide for drought response supplied by Tolke indicates that if water levels are of 15% and lower, restrictions and rationing should be placed on water usage as this means there are approximately only 12 months of water left.
The City of Windhoek have regulations implemented currently to save water but mandatory water savings are coming in the next few months. This will include no watering or planting of lawns and the watering of plants once a week. Additionally, all fixed tariff consumers will have to save 25% of water, water features may not be filled with water and no drinking water will be permitted for sportfields.
The construction industry will also be forced to save water by implementing heavy restrictions on water usage. Furthermore, no water leaks will be permitted and owners of business and homes will be held liable for any leaks and will only be granted a leak rebate for one month.
For now, the CoW will enforce water saving regulations and continue with its water saving campaign whilst closing irrigation systems of parks that makes use of drinking water.

Rivers have been flowing in several regions the last weekend and many Namibians witnessed the rains and running waters when travelling in the country. The good news was that the three dams supplying Windhoek with water had some inflow, but the situation still stays critical. Most inflow was into the Hardap, Naute and Oanib dam in the south where the levels shot up to over 60 percentage of their full capacity. In some places tourists can only cross rivers in 4x4´s while some roads are in a bad condition after the heavy rains.
From Out of Nature south of Windhek it is reported, that 32 mm were recorded last Saturday and the rivers were in flood. From the Harmony Mountain Village 28 mm were measured on Friday 10. February and thid morning 7 mm for the previous 24 hours.On Sunday 12 mm fell. On Friday night 18 mm were recorded on the farm Nomtsas, which is the neighboring farm of Sandhof where the lilies flowered. Another neighbor in that area had up to 28 mm of rain. Near Tsumeb the farm Otjiguinas reported 8 mm on the 11. February 2017 and 18 mm on Sunday. Near Mariental on the farm Kameldoring 11 mm were measured this morning for the period Sunday morning 8.00 hours till Monday morning 8.00 hours.
Most inflow was recorded into the Hardap dam near Mariental where 79,370 million/m³ reached the dam via the Fishriver. The dam might reach the 70 percentage level soon and then NamWater has to open the sluices and release water. Good inflow of 12,9 million/m³s was reported for the Naute dam  and the Oanob dam received 11,7 million/m³.
Namwater announced, that all different dams in the country were filled with 48,1 percent of their full capacity on Monday 13. February 2017. This means that there are 336,133 million cubic meters of water in all the dams. Last year at the same time there were 39,6 percent and 276,815 million / m³ available. If all 17 dams in the country are full, they store 705,855 million/m³.
