Avoca Beach Picture Theatre - Theatre By The Sea
Avoca Beach Picture Theatre began in 1948
In front gardens of brothers Mervyn and Norman Hunter to raise funds to build the Avoca Beach rock pool and continued as a very welcome part of the community life.
Projecting through a hole made in Norman’s garage wall onto a homemade screen, people brought cushions to soften the wooden benches.

The candybar was under Mervyn’s home and when it rained, everyone tumbled onto the verandah for shelter to continue watching the film!
The brothers decided that a multi-purpose permanent structure was needed, and the Theatre was built. It included the 500 seat cinema, a Commonwealth Bank and a real estate office. The Theatre operated on Saturdays and during the school holidays, never being open on a Sunday as it was used to hold both Catholic and Presbyterian Church services.

Family Fun Day at the Avoca Beach Picture Theatre
A big day out for all the family! Beginning on the lawn with jumping castle and some amazing Australian animals thanks to Australia Walkabout Wildlife Park, as well as the opportunity to get creative with plaster fun painting and fill tummies with a sausage sizzle or a colourful snow cone.
Then into the Theatre for an animal show and a dance show with Rewind Dance Studio before the magical, “The NeverEnding Story”. A sensitive little boy, still grieving for his mother, finds respite in a book which chronicles the plight of Fantasia, a magical land created by the dreams and imagination of humankind, now threatened with destruction by The Nothing, a shapeless, ominous force created by human despair. When Bastian reads a description of himself in the book, he begins to wonder if Fantasia is real and needs him to survive.

Bogan Song Cycle At The Avoca Beach Picture Theatre
The Bogan Song Cycle is the brainchild of Dorian Mode. A proud Coastie, when not holding up the bar of his local fishing club, Dorian is often found out and about the Coast fishing, teaching or gigging. Mode called on all these central coast lifestyle experiences when composing the music and lyrics of The Bogan Song Cycle. He’s also the first person in Australia to have a doctorate in Bogans!
Andrew Wilkie, (virtuoso vibraphonist and composer of Tap Dogs) and local chippie from Avoca Beach, accompanies Mode to perform sublimely smooth music with droll lyrics and descriptive storytelling unveiling bogan lifestyles.
Dorian Mode and Andrew Wilkie are The Bogan Song Cycle.
Avoca Beach Theatre. No to Five
I walked the beaches of the Central coast this week, from Forresters to Wagstaff, to ask local people what they thought of the plans to turn our charming single screen theatres into a five screen multiplex. Here is what I found

An intimate, behind-the-scenes tour of the blockbuster Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs exhibition. A giant of modern art, this landmark show explores the final chapter in Matisse’s career, which saw him ‘carving into colour’ and creating his series of spectacular cut-outs. From snow flowers to dancers, to circus scenes and a world famous snail, this unique exhibition brings together a dazzling array of Matisse pieces from around the globe.
The film features interviews with experts including Tate Director Nicholas Serota and friends and relatives of Matisse, and includes rare archive footage of him at work. Cinema audiences can also enjoy breathtaking new performances inspired by Matisse’s cut-outs: Royal Ballet principal dancer Zenaida Yanowsky performs a dance piece reflecting the colours, dynamism and freedom of the cutouts, and jazz musician Courtney Pine performs a piece invoking the golden age of Bebop and jazz greats, the improvisational rhythms of which Matisse compared to his own way of working when making the cut-outs.
