The 2018 Avondale Qvevri Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre which is a Rhone style blend produced in Paarl, South Africa.
They make use of Qvevri vessels which are large earthenware vessels used for the fermentation, storage and ageing of traditional Georgian wine. Resembling large, egg-shaped amphorae without handles, they are buried below ground in the Avondale cellar

Johnathan Grieve Avondale Estate Vineyard Paarl, South Africa
Biodynamic Vineyard Extraordinaire, Johnathan and his father have created the first gravity fed Vineyard in Africa. Avondale currently has 100 hectares of land planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Mourvedre, Grenache, Viognier, Rousanne and Chardonnay vines.
Certified organic – All 100 hectares are certified organic by the Dutch-based Control Union, one of Europe’s leading certification authorities. This provides accreditation to the German Bio Nach EG-Öko Verordnung, Britain’s Soil Association, and the USDA certification in the United States of America.
Working with Nature – At Avondale we have joined forces with Nature to help mitigate the impact of monoculture on the environment. We are constantly learning from Nature and emulating its ways of sustaining an ecosystem to the advantage of our vines.

Avondale Vineyard Paarl, Western Cape South Africa
The picturesque 160-hectare farm that is today known as Avondale has been under cultivation for more than 300 years. Early records show that the land was one of the first in the Paarl valley to be allocated specifically for the production of wine grapes.
In 1997, John and Ginny Grieve, owners of Vital Health Foods, purchased the Avondale as their family farm. Youngest son, Johnathan Grieve took up the challenge of transforming this long-used land into a robust, balanced vineyard ecosystem that would ensure that Avondale will support the lives of future generations.
The first vintage under the Avondale label was produced in 1999.
In 2000, a catastrophic fire swept down the mountains. Out of the ashes, rose the opportunity to truly sculpt the land and its natural systems in an unfettered, sustainable way. Johnathan developed a unique approach to viticulture which he called ‘BioLOGIC®’. He implemented organic and biodynamic practices – not for the sake of certification but because they worked to promote life on the farm. Johnathan also looked to what modern science and technologies for sustainability could offer, and seamlessly blended these great ideas, knowledge and methodologies into his farming and wine-making. Using Nature as model, mentor and measure, Johnathan built soil fertility, planted new vines and set about achieving the goal of making natural, delicious wines in a healthy, balanced environment.
In 2003, a new state-of-the-art, gravity-flow cellar was built to facilitate a high quality, slow wine production process.
Every step of the way, a holistic, systems-based approach and fine attention to detail has ensured that today, Avondale makes extraordinary wines approved by Mother Nature.

In this mini documentary, I take a trip to biodynamic and organic wine farm, Avondale. Located in Paarl, Avondale is owned by the Grieve family. Jonathan Grieve has pioneered the BioLOGIC technique to farming which combines biodynamic, organic and modern farming techniques to create truly unique, pure and exceptional wines.
We are taken on a tour of the tasting room, cellar, vineyards and chicken mobile, and also get to meet the ducks.

A Pinotage é a casta símbolo da África do Sul. Resultado de um cruzamento entre as francesas Pinot Noir e Cinsault (também chamada de Hermitage), foi criada deliberadamente com o intuito de mesclar o melhor das duas variedades. É uma uva cujos perfis aromáticos e gustativos fogem ao tradicional, mostrando notas exóticas e muito interessantes.
Este vinho, Veldfire Walker Bay Pinotage 2013, não é destinado aos fracos de coração... Produzido por uma das vinícolas mais renomadas pelo cultivo da cepa - a Stanford Hills - este belo Pinotage é um tinto de personalidade forte. O aroma é muito intenso, e mostra frutas do bosque bem maduras (como cassis e groselha negra), com notas que lembram licor de ervas, castanhas, couro e violetas. No palato temos um vinho denso, com taninos bem maturados e ótima acidez, mostrando um final de boca de longa duração, que exibe distintas notas achocolatadas. Boekenhoutskloof's Marc Kent on South African Syrah
The Boekenthoutskloof estate in the Franschoek region of South Africa has produced wine since 1771, but its output was sold off in bulk. Winemaker Marc Kent and company arrived in 1994 with a vision to focus their efforts primarily on Syrah and Syrah-based blends. Today, the winery label Syrah stands out as one of the world's best.
Lazanou Organic Chenin Blanc-Chardonnay-Viognier 2011
This is an un-oaked wine but gets its rich mouth feel from spending 9 months 'on the lees' (dead yeast cells). Bottled in November 2011, there were fewer than 900 cases produced.
Lazanou is a small scale producer with just over 5 hectares under vine, though still boasting a variety of cultivated grapes. They've been growing Chenin Blanc since 1987 and have since expanded to Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah and Mourvedre.

Cosecha is the Spanish word for harvest. The name reflects our location next to the harvest area where grapes are sorted and crushed. It also expresses our desire to bring the farm-fresh, Latin flavours of our family's southwestern roots to Cape Town.
