Japan's Biggest Dance Party: Awaodori Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
The world is full of amazing street parties, music festivals and carnivals! In Japan, there's this – the AWA ODORI. It's held annually in Tokushima and it's historically -- a big drunken dance party in the streets! That's right, Samurai were even banned from joining in 1671 because they were continually disgracing themselves. (It was for their own protection.) Tokushima is known for its love of dance and drinking, the jolliest place in Japan!
And this time, that's where John is -- TOKUSHIMA!
In this episode, we'll get a glimpse at this amazing street party and a few other attractions in the area.

About the AWAODORI:
It takes place from August 12 to 15 every year.
The parade and dancing starts at 6pm to 8pm.
After that, the people take it to the streets where impromptu dancing takes place all over. There are plenty of street food stands and izakaya in the area to keep you full and happy.

Get there around 6:30pm for the start where they will teach you how to do the dance and a few chants.

Awa Odori (Awa Dance Festival) Tokushima City (2013 ) 阿波おどり徳島市
The Awa Dance Festival (阿波踊り Awa Odori) is held from 12 to 15 August as part of the Obon festival in Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku in Japan. Awa Odori is the largest dance festival in Japan, attracting over 1.3 million tourists every year.
Groups of choreographed dancers and musicians known as ren (連) dance through the streets, typically accompanied by the shamisen lute, taiko drums, shinobue flute and the kane bell. Performers wear traditional obon dance costumes, and chant and sing as they parade through the streets.
Awa is the old feudal administration name for Tokushima Prefecture, and odori means dance.

Awa Odori (dance parade in Tokushima, Japan): 阿波おどり
Awa Odori (Awa dance) is a kind of Bon Odori originated in Tokushima prefecture, and has a history of 400 years. Bon is an annual Buddhist event and it is believed that souls of ancestors return to their home during this period. Awa Odori festivals are held at various places in the prefecture, and among them the one in Tokushima city is the biggest. A hundred of thousands of the dancers parade the streets, and entire city is involved in the Awa Odori dance.

Discovering Ethnic Music of the World
The influence of various kinds of music is an essential element to being a musician. The wider your range the more you have to work with and bounce your creative energy off of. A great way to extend one’s musical horizons is by not only listening to, but studying, music of the world. While doing so your own music will no doubt pick up ideas that you would have never thought of before. Just as it’s important to eat foods from different cultures, the same can be said about understanding music as well.
Get ready to have your perception of music split open and readjusted!
In this video we will look at the traditional music of Tokushima, Japan - Awa Odori.
I recently returned from an extended trip around Asia. During my time I sought out and participated in as much music as I could - documenting it along the way. This is something I have been doing for years. So I created this new series. These videos are in no way complete examinations of the music. Simply quick glimpses and some discussion, almost in VLOG style.

寶船（たからぶね）TAKARABUNE
1995年、阿波踊りの本場・徳島県出身の連長が主宰となり、東京都で発足。2012年に法人化し、日本唯一のプロ阿波踊りグループとなる。これまでに、世界38都市、年間約300ステージを行うまでに活動を展開。
現在は、世界最大級のフェスティバルへ招致を受けるなど、全世界から数多くのオファーが後を絶たず、毎年10カ国以上の海外公演と国内公演の両立を果たしている。2014年には、日本PRのCM『日本の若さが世界を変える』に出演し、「my Japan Award 2014」にて《箭内道彦賞》を受賞。
近年ではメディアにも数多く取り上げられ、フジテレビ「にじいろジーン」や、日本テレビ「ネプ＆イモトの世界番付」、テレビ東京「YOUは何しに日本へ」、テレビ朝日「スーパーJチャンネル」などに多数出演。また、アサヒ飲料『三ツ矢サイダー』のCMに抜擢され、長澤まさみ、ビートたけし、ディーン・フジオカと並び出演。国内でも、「ダボス会議アフターパーティー」、「もしもしにっぽん FESTIVAL」「泡フェス」「TEDxUTokyo」など話題のイベントに出演し、会場を熱狂させた。近年では、日本を代表するDJであるDAISHI DANCEとスペシャルステージを行うなど、他分野とのコラボレーションも精力的に行っている。

Takarabune is a creative dance company of Awa Odori, one of the most well-known Japanese traditional dances with a 450 years of history. They push the limits of this venerable traditional art: their signature dance style is so aggressive and vigorous that it has been characterized as ‘dance beyond Awa Odori’. Their performance at a number of Awa Odori events held in Tokyo has generated growing interest among a variety of media, and the group has gained a reputation as the hottest Awa Odori group (ren) in Japan.
