One day safari in Amboseli | KENYA
Wildlife is certainly one of the main reason tourists visit Kenya. Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, the National Park of Amboseli is well known for its large herds of elephants.
The park is home to about 1500 elephants divided in about 58 families.Since 1972, the Amboseli Elephant Research Project has been listing the elephants, and that has become an important source of baseline data on elephant social and reproductive patterns and is used as a model for assessing the status of other elephant populations in Africa and even in Asia.
Elephants in Africa have been long victims of ivory poaching. The presence of many Masai villages in the park and the constant research done have considerably helped in maintaining the area free from poaching activities.
Amboseli became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1991 and you'll will certainly spot numerous monkeys, birds, wildebeest and zebras, and you’ve a reasonable chance of spotting hyena and lions and all that in just a day!
Note: this video was shot during a fam trip organised by the Kenya Tourism Board on the occasion of Magical Kenya Tourism Expo.
The endangered Rothschild giraffe at Giraffe Centre, Kenya | Award Safaris
The #Rothschild giraffe is a subspecies of the #giraffe. It is one of the most endangered distinct populations of giraffes.
Did you know that the name giraffe is derived from the Arabic word ‘zarafa’ which translates to ‘one who walks swiftly’?
The giraffe was first named and described by Lord Walter Rothschild a passionate zoologist and a member of Rothschild family. He described his giraffe following an expedition to East Africa in the early 1900’s. The Rothschild giraffe is also known as Baringo giraffe or Ugandan giraffe.
The Rothschild giraffe is easily distinguishable from other subspecies due to its unique design of the pelt. Unlike the other subspecies of giraffes found in Kenya, the Rothschild giraffe displays no markings on the lower parts of its legs which give the impression of “wearing white stockings,”
Due to their height, they can see many miles away and spot lions and other predators before they ambush them.
This advanced warning capability, combined with sharp hooves for kicking and running up to speeds of 35 miles per hour, is enough to keep the giraffe relatively safe from predators.
The rare species, considered as one of the tallest giraffes at about 20 feet in height, gives beautiful scenery as you drive around the park.
The Rothschild’s giraffe does not have a specific season for mating and is known to mate at any time of the year with a gestation period of 14 to 16 months and gives birth to one calf.
It uses its tongue, which is about 18-20 inches long, to reach out to leaves of the thick acacia trees which are its main source of food.
They are also friendly unlike other giraffe sub species.
Conservation:
In 1979 the Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W.) was founded in #Kenya by the late Jock Leslie-Melville, a Kenyan citizen of British descent, and his American-born wife, Betty Leslie-Melville. They began the Giraffe Centre after discovering the sad plight of the Rothschild Giraffe
At the time, the animals had lost their habitat in Western Kenya, with only 130 of them left on the expansive 18,000-acre Soy Ranch that was being sub-divided to resettle squatters. Their first effort to save the subspecies was to bring two young giraffes, Daisy and Marlon, to their home southwest of Nairobi in the Lang’ata suburb, here they raised the calves and started a programme of breeding giraffe in captivity. This is where the centre remains to date.
Today there are now over 650 Rothschild Giraffe safe and breeding well in various Kenyan national parks. Recent herds have been introduced to Soysambu Ranch by Lake Elementaita in the Great Rift Valley, Kigio Conservancy and the Sergoit Ranch in the Mount Elgon region.
Worldwide, there are 1,671 Rothschild's and increasing, about 26 percent more than there were in the 1960s, according to the IUCN.

Masai Traditional Dance at Masai Mara, Kenya |Award Safaris |
African music is an incredibly rich and fertile ground. Traditional music in #Africa is an integral part of various cultures in #Kenya, playing an important role in the way people interact, celebrate and pass on historic events.Different regions produce their own distinctive musical style. Traditional music is a rich source of knowledge that has been on a steep decline for many years.
The #Maasai tribe or( masai ) is a unique and popular tribe as their culture has remained unchanged over the years and the community has been able to preserve their lifestyle. Indigenous music is usually passed on from generation to generation. Maasais speak Maa, a nilotic ethnic language from their origin in the Nile region of North Africa. They are closest to the Samburu in both language and cultural authenticity
Your africa #Safari will not be complete without visiting a maasai village.
Wherever you go on the East African safari circuit of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, you will find the maasai community a near constant presence.
Though they traditionally dressed in animal skins, today typical maasai dress consists of red cloak ( known as shuka ) wrapped around the body and loads of beaded jewelry placed around the neck and arms. These are worn by both masai men and women and vary in color depending on the occassion.

Giraffe Centre - Giraffes Want to Play! | Nairobi, Kenya
Around this time last year, Life Out Loud crew were in Kenya. One of the places we visited was the Giraffe Centre and we had an amazing time! Apart from the browsing area--where visitors could feed the giraffes and give them some kisses (at your own risk!)--Giraffe Centre also has an information centre, a nature sanctuary, tea house and a gift shop.
This is a place we would recommend to anyone visiting Nairobi! Spend an afternoon here and you will not be disappointed :D :D #LOLGOkenya #giraffecenter #kenya #nairobi

The Giraffe Centre is the creation of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W. Kenya), a Kenyan non-profit organisation. Our main purpose is to educate Kenyan school children and youth on their country’s wildlife and environment, as well as give local and international visitors an opportunity to come into close contact with the world’s tallest species, the giraffe.
