48 Hours in Naha, Okinawa // Tropical Getaway in Japan #travelguide #naha #okinawa
Welcome back – or as the Okinawans would say, mensoure! Here's my video about my recent trip to Naha, Okinawa! It's the biggest city in Okinawa, which is a beautiful tropical island in Japan. They call it the Hawaii of Japan, and I can see why!
I was in Okinawa with one of my best friends, Claire, and we spent two days exploring this amazing place. We ate a lot, walked around and took in all the sights. It was truly magical, and one of my favorite destinations. The people in Okinawa are just so friendly and willing to help anyone!
See below for a list of places we went. I highly recommend visiting if you ever get a chance!
Happy traveling xx

Operation Focus Retina--Kadena AB, Okinawa--March 1969
These videos taken by Jim Adams and forward to me. During the mid-to-late 1960's he was a Lockheed C-141 Tech Rep assigned to Kadena AB. After assignments on the C-141 and then the C-5, he retired from Lockheed in 1999 as the vice president of Field Support.
Jim recently found numerous super 8 mm movies he made then and converted into a digital format that included two movies of the subject operation.
Forty-four C-141's taking off several seconds apart as they flew to South Korea to air-drop elements of the 82nd Airborne Division in the longest distance that airborne troops had ever flown to a parachute drop--8500 miles from Ft Bragg with two refueling stops to the DZ in 55 hours.
1961/62 home movies of Futenma, Okinawa
December 1961: Taken in late 1961 or early 1962 while my wind-up 8mm movie camera still worked, this shows downtown Futenma, Okinawa and the immediate surroundings. The first part is at Ishikawa Beach for our unit party. Also show videos of the new Torii Station base to which we moved from Futenma Station - bus trip from one to the other included. Shows airstrip where low altitude parachutes were tested in 1962 across the street from Torii Station and the quarry were a half-dozen or so co-workers lost their lives when their car went over it a couple years later.
Typical typhoon hitting Torii Station shown - notice shrub blown to 90 degree angle by winds.
Futenma is shown when it still had dirt streets that became mud slogs after every heavy rain - it was paved after we moved to the new barracks at Torii Station.
Okinawa Futenma Obon Eisa
Some Obon dancers from Futenma,Okinawa Japan, gathered in the parking lot in front of Ryubo. Please excuse the poor resolution. This was recorded on my Sony Ericsson S001 cell phone. I probably could have done a better job, however this is my first attempt at this.
We were just going shopping and did not have much time.

O-Bon / Bon Odori @ aza-Oki, Yomitan-son, Okinawa Sept 6 & 8, 1987 (unedited)
This video is a little more down-to-Earth than the scenes we typically see of O-bon Season celebrations. I set out to record our small village's activities and more of the behind-the-scenes and peripheral activities of the local residents.
This video begins in the community center of the aza-Oki neighborhood of Yomitan Village where we lived. A lot of work went into preparation for the evening's celebrations.
Around 6:06 it's two days later, September 8th. I walked around our neighborhood and recorded activities of O-bon and Bon Odori in the afternoon and well into the night. As the sun sets the video quality is markedly diminished but the festivities are still a treat for your ears.
At around the 10:00 15:00 marks they are at a newly constructed houses where they bestow good wishes and pray for good fortune for the occupants.
Around 28:00 I introduced myself to one of the neighbors and, yes, I know now that I was grammatically incorrect. It was only 1987 and I have learned a lot since then. Wha'd'yagonnado?
Shortly after that my daughter, Brittney, and foster daughter, Marianne, make a few appearances. As the evening wore on they ended up in kimonos - and I can't remember who provided those. But they fit right in with the rest of the gang after that!

DYA717 – Japan, Okinawa 3 2015 09 30 Asakusa Shibuya Shinjuku
B, H & S woke up early and went walking in da dark at 3 a.m. to the Don Quixote store – took half an hour. They went shopping and bought a lot of stuffs. So they caught a cab, got dropped off at the wrong Toyoko Inn, had to walk a fairly long way back to the hotel. By that time, I was eating breakfast – was about 6:55 a.m. They said the only places open were the Don Q (the Japanese called it DON-KEY) and a 24-hr Denny’s a block away.
So, they ate breakfast with the gang at the Toyoko Inn and a few moments after, da whole gang walked over to the Don-key. The younger folks walked fast to get in their shopping time. A few of us oldsters mosied casually to the Don-key. Then one part of the gang went to Shibuya to meet K and the rest went to Denny’s for a snack and coffee and waited for the ROX shopping building to open at 10:30 a.m. (what? Such late opening for a nice big department store!). They had a UNI QLO on the 3rd floor (?) and a Daiso 100-yen store on the 4th floor. I found some Ellefar felt eyeliner which someone ordered. We cabbed back to the hotel, dumped the junks off. Then we went HE-LE on to Shibuya station, but got side tracked in Ameyokocho and had a small bowl of udon. Then we went to Shibuya and got out the Hachiko exit and sat around the Hachiko statue and waited for the rest of the gang to catch up.
At around 4:30 p.m. we got the gang together and went to visit K’s new digs then went to Shinjuku station for dinner. After dinner the young ones went HE-LE on for more adventures while some oldsters went back to the hotel.
It has been a long day and we did a lot, lots of walking!
Looking For Dasai Shrine [Hirata, Iwakuni City] - Kitty Does Japan: Dailies (January 7 2015)
Today's adventure had me searching for a shrine that is located in a neighborhood not far from where I live. I had discovered it while coming through a map of my local area and figured out that I would try and find it. The shrine, listed on the map as Dasai Shrine, is not very large or popular. In fact although I have found it in a few different listings online there is not much information available on it besides the location. Nevertheless I figured it was the perfect place to start adventuring for 2015.
The journey to the shrine itself was an awesome one. Having spent so many year in Okinawa, where the inaka is really nonexistent, I was not expecting the tiny winding roads that I saw today. I am searching for words to describe it but it's really hard to be honest. Everything was silent except for the crackle of dirt and pebbles under my tire or the stream that flowed down alongside the narrow road.
Unfortunately when getting to the shrine itself I discovered that it was very much tucked away behind a few houses. I parked my bike and tried to make my way to the shrine but after discovering a rope that was hanging rather low in the path that would normally be used to enter I passed on the opportunity to get an up close look. Regardless I still had a wonderful time!
