Kohekohe church, Awhitu, Auckland
Kohekohe church, Awhitu, Auckland
In the early October, we went to the small town Waiuku, and explored the popular places in this region, such as Manukau Heads Lighthouse, and Awhitu regional park.
On the way to the Lighthouse, we saw this historical Kohekohe church, as this church had been sold to the private owner, we only filmed outside the fence.
I found one article from the website regarding the story of this church
It is an iconic sort of building and New Zealand has pulled down so many of its buildings, says Patsy, who bought the church in September 2012 with business partner and fellow teacher, Antonella Coppolino. In those four years Patsy has learned that the church was built during the Tarawera eruptions in 1886. Papers Past noted the builders were high enough up to see this glow in the sky and to hear the rumble.
It was used as a Presbyterian church, until decommissioned in 1976. Outside is a memorial to the church's worshippers.
The church, I think, has always been on that plot of land, she says. Some people used to walk across to that church across a lot of paddocks. People who went there when they were young, and I am talking about people now in their 70s and 80s, think that the church has been moved but, actually, the road has been changed.
When Patsy and Antonella bought the church, it had been unused for 35 years.

Manukau Heads Lighthouse, Auckland, New Zealand
Manukau Heads Lighthouse
Phillip has two weeks school holidays, we went the small town Waiuku, and explored the popular places in this region, such as Manukau Heads Lighthouse, and Awhitu regional park
The Manakau Heads Lighthouse is only a 20 minute drive from the Waiuku town centre. The drive to the lighthouse features a lot of amazing scenery and is very peaceful. There is a carpark and bathroom facilities down at the foot of the hill and we climbed along the wooden staircases to reach the top. The lighthouse opens at 9:00 am and we got there early so that there wouldn't be many visitors. We climbed to the top of the lighthouse and explored other lookouts in the area.
The information below is from the website
Top of the list is a trip to the historical Manukau Heads Lighthouse, jutting out from the tip of the peninsula, located in the Franklin district. The lighthouse is one of only a few in New Zealand that are open to the public and the views are amazing. The wind and salt spray will clear out the cobwebs too. On your way to the peninsula, stop by Waiuku, a historic town on the Sunset Coast. Don't miss The Kentish Hotel, New Zealand's Longest Running Hotel for a drink or dinner and enjoy a view of the estuary.
The information below from the website
Stroll around the Lightkeeper’s balcony just as he would have done nearly 140 years ago. Few other New Zealand lighthouses reward visitors with such an authentic experience. Lighthouse and adjacent Signal Station command wide views of the mighty Manukau Bar, Paratutae (site of the first signal station), Auckland’s sub-tropical Waitakere Ranges, Auckland City and the whole of lake-like Manukau Harbour. Mount Taranaki (2518 m) frequently clears clouds to the south.

Brook Homestead, Awhitu Regioanl Park, Auckland
Phillip has two weeks school holidays, we went the small town Waiuku, and explored the popular places in this region, such as Manukau Heads Lighthouse, and Awhitu regional park
We walked through the Brook Homestead walkway to see the historic place. It is interesting to know the history of this family.
The following information is from the Auckland Council brochure about this park:
English immigrants John and Sarah Brook built the Brook Homestead, originally called Brook Haven, 1878. It remains a central feature of the park. The family added the batch in front of the homestead in 1907.
In 1971, John Brook's grandson Fred sold his land to the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) Awhitu Regional Park was officially opened in 1976 and continues to operate as a working farm.
The information below is from the website
A pleasant country drive through Waiuku, leads to peaceful Āwhitu on the southwest shores of the Manukau Harbour. Wander freely over parkland pastures, explore the wetlands, enjoy the safe, sandy beaches and sheltered picnic and barbecue areas.
From the car park follow the red waymarkers along the foreshore, past the historic Brook jetty and up onto the headland where the Brook Homestead sits amid a glade of trees. The homestead has recently been repainted in its original colour scheme. From the homestead either return by the same route or follow the road behind the wetlands back to the car park. This route includes the Mäori carving (pouwhenua) which is well worth a visit. Enjoy the great view over the wetland and the bay from here.
