Ayia Napa Monastery is the best known landmark of the Ayia Napa area. It has a charm that represents a time when Ayia Napa was a sleepy fishing village. It seems that in ancient times, the location where the monastery and the village exists today, was covered by thick forest, visited only by hunters from the neighbouring villages. There is not sufficient evidence as to when the Monastery was originally founded. The cave, the hiding place and the well, all testify to the existence of the Christian community, from the time of the Byzantine era. According to local tradition, in the cave that has now become a church, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was found by a hunter. The hunter’s dog was first to see the glowing icon and began barking, insistently calling over his master.

Ayia Napa Monastery, Cyprus
The monastery of Ayia Napa (Μονή Αγίας Νάπας) is located in the central square of the homonymous village in the Ammochostos district and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The exact date of its founding is unknown but is thought to date back to the 14th century. The fountain-house in the centre of the open courtyard was probably built in the 16th century.
Restoration work took place in 1813 according to inscription on the wall in the northeast wing of the monastery.
The monastery of Ayia Napa consists of several buildings built in different eras ranging from the 14th to the 19th century, developed around a rectangular courtyard.
The church was built around an underground rock-cut chamber and is the older core of the monastery.
At the northern entrance to the monastery, there is a very old gigantic sycamore tree which Giorgos Seferis wrote the poem “Ayianapa B”
Conservation works were conducted between 2009-2012 and were co-founded by the European Regional Development Fund under the framework of the Cross-border Cooperation Program “Greece-Cyprus 2007-2013”.

(AYIA NAPA MONASTERY) from 7:00pm
The Medieval Festival was first celebrated in Ayia Napa in 2006. It has since become an annual festival and is celebrated with a series of events and activities aiming to explore and learn more about the medieval ages. These celebrations are created with historical accuracy and they function as narrative representations of the everyday life of the people in the contemporary period. The participation of European and Russian groups has established it an international festival which Ayia Napa is proud to host.
All events take place within the Medieval Monastery of Ayia Napa whose structure forms a natural setting which enhances the thematic aspects of the medieval period.

- theatrical play with the Medieval Monastery as natural setting,
- music concerts and dance shows, performed by groups from European countries such as Greece, Russia, Italy , Spain ,Ukraine ,Romania, Slovakia, Germany, Holland, France and Cyprus.

- Medieval market setting with products for sale such as wine (in wooden barrels), medieval food and other

According to local legend, the area around the monastery was accidentally discovered by a hunter in pursuit of his prey. Upon discovery, the icon of the Virgin Mary in the area was called Virgin Mary of Napa, eventually shortened to Ayia Napa. The monastery, built in 1100, was built around a cave, in honour of the Virgin Mary of Ayia Napa. According to local tradition, nobody lived within close vicinity of Ayia Napa until 1790. The first inhabitant was Nikolaos Kemitzis from Thessaloniki, who arrived from Greece around 1790 and settled in the village of Panayia, located on the northeastern part of Ayia Napa. Kemitzis had a fight with the Ottoman authorities who ruled Cyprus at the time, and decided to move near the monastery of Ayia Napa.

The charming Medieval Monastery of Agia Napa stands in the
middle of the village and was built in the form of a Medieval Castle around 1500 AD.
The monastery is partially built underground and cut into the rock, surrounded by a high wall. It is dedicated to ‘Our Lady of the Forests’, with the name coming from the Ancient Greek word for wooded valley (‘Napa’) as a result of the area’s past topography.
