Ayios Neophytos Monastery and the nearby village of Tala, Paphos, Cyprus
High in the hills above Paphos in Cyprus lies the Monastery of Agios Neophytos just beyond the village of Tala. Ayios Neophytos Monastery is said to have been founded by a Cypriot hermit and writer called Neophytos in the year 1159. Neophytos carved a home for himself out of the mountain rock and it is here that you will find some of the finest frescoes from the Byzantine period dating from the 12th to the 15th century.
CYPRUS: Agios Neophytos Monastery [HD]
Agios Neophytos Monastery lies 10 km outside Paphos, near Tala village. Agios (means Saint) Neophytos was the founder of the monastery in 1159. He lived there (from 1170) and died in 1219 at the age of 85. He is considered to be one of the most significant figures of the Church of Cyprus.
Inside the Engleistra (place of seclusion near the monastery) Saint Neophytos led a hermit’s life until 1170. The Engleistra was initially a natural cave on the eastern side of a hill’s slope, and was carved into a place of seclusion by St. Neophytos. It consisted of two areas. One area was a small chapel dedicated to Timios Stavros ( Holy Cross) and the other was the Saint’s cell, in which he also carved his tomb.
A famous painter, Theodoros Apsevdis, undertook to paint the frescoes in the Engleistra. You can also can see Byzantine icons of exceptional artistic quality in the main church of the monastery. Or in the museum of the monastery, which has exhibits from both the ancient period and Byzantine period.
The main church of the monastery was built around 200 years after the death of St. Neophytos and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Agios Neophytos Monastery - CYPRUS
Saint Neophytos Monastery (Greek: Ιερά Μονή Αγίου Νεοφύτου) lies 15 km west of Paphos, is one of the best-known monasteries in Cyprus. It was founded by monk Neophytos in the 12th century. The property is currently a museum consisting of the Engleistra (Place of Seclusion, built in a natural cave, with a small chapel) and the Monastery.
The Agios Neophytos Monastery was founded by Neophytos. After being jailed for pursuing an ascetic life, he fled into the hills of Cyprus and found a small natural cave in 1159. Months passed while he made sure the area was deserted and quiet. He slowly excavated the opening further to encompass his hermitage cell, a small chapel, and his eventual tomb. While it began as a hermitage for Neophytos alone, he eventually gained a small following and the Engleistra, as it was also called, became a quiet monastic community in 1170 when the Bishop of Paphos convinced him to take a pupil. Neophytos was staunchly against materialism and being bothered, which kept the population of monks much smaller than at other monasteries of the time. In his second Ritual Ordinance, he states that the number of monks was around fifteen or eighteen.

Monasteries in Cyprus ( Kykkos Monastery, Agios Neophytos Monastery & Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery
Hello fellow traveller! While you are in Cyprus, please take time to visit some of the most beautiful monasteries. For me, number 1, was definitely Kykkos Monastery. Photographs are mainly restricted inside, but the place is so amazing that you have to see it. Also, the Kykkos museum is out of this world and you will be be surprised to see how religious paintings looked back as far as the 12th century.
Other beautiful place is Agios Neophytos Monastery. Here there are some very old murals, paintings straight on the monastery cave walls, all in beautiful colours.
There is also lots of facilities for visitors, large parking, restaurant, cafes, shops with traditional Cypriot sweets.
Last monastery in this video is Chrysoroyiatissa. What a fairytale place! Everything in order, so neat and pretty. The light purple lilac flowers are spreading harmony to this place. Peace, quite, light...
I strongly recommend you to see as much as you can in your adventures...Cyprus will never be disappointing. :-)

Kykkos (Cyprus) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kykkos in Cyprus.
In the heart of the mediaeval island of Cyprus are the isolated and unspoiled Troodos Mountains that contain the finest and largest monasteries on the island. Kykkos is located some distance from the nearest village and is situated at an altitude of one thousand one hundred and forty metres above sea level on the mountain of the same name. At the main entrance, golden shining mosaics adorn the walls and religious motifs indicate its holiness. Due to its religious and historic importance the monastery is very popular with both the faithful and tourists alike and in 1998 a splendid museum was inaugurated that exhibits numerous works of precious art. The atmosphere of the museum’s exhibition rooms with their marble floors, ornate wooden ceilings and special illumination. give visitors a strong sense of bygone times. Unique icons and stone reliefs are a reminder of the fame and splendour of Greek culture and the Greek Orthodox religion. The Panagia is entered from a second inner courtyard. The iconastasis of this small monastery church are among the most splendid and precious of the Greek Orthodox world. Each of the monastery’s buildings was re-built following a fire in 1813 but thankfully the ‘miracle’ has survived to the present day.
