Should You visit AYUTTHAYA RUINS - Best Day Trip in Bangkok
We visited the Ayutthaya Ruins, Bangkoks best day trip. It only takes two hours and costs 15 Baht by train. We spent an incredible (and humid!) day climbing ancient ruins and filming the best Ayutthaya Thailand temples. We got up close and personal to these old Thai temples and learned a ton of interesting Ayutthaya history throughout the process.
Ayutthaya was a 14th Century ancient city which served as the Thailand capital city for over 400 years! This Thailand ancient city is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and exploring it’s old Thai temples is one of the top things to do in Ayutthaya. Each temple site in Ayutthaya costs 50 Baht so be prepared for these entrance fees and don’t forget to bring cash. If you want to explore all of Ayutthaya Historical Park, there are tickets that are around 220 Baht that will let you into 6 different temples. Some sights you can explore without a dress code, but others you need to have your knees and shoulders covered.

Ayutthaya is the ancient Thai capital, located about 1 - 1/2 hours drive from Bangkok, it is famous throughout Thailand for its beautiful temples.
On our latest trip to Ayutthaya, Sai and I enjoyed
its temples and its history, the trip from Bangkok to Ayutthaya was easy to get to by van. We had so much fun dressing up in the Thai traditional costumes, while visiting the Ayutthaya temples. When you’re in Ayutthaya, you should not miss the opportunity to have insanely delicious seafood from the restaurants and markets.

Ayutthaya - Video Guide of Thailand's Ancient Capital City
Ayutthaya is one of the most popular places to visit near Bangkok. Read my full guide to Ayutthaya here:
Visiting Ayutthaya, Thailand, is one of the best day trips to take from Bangkok. It's Thailand's ancient capital city, second after Sukhothai. The city has a very long history with many ups and downs. It was overthrown by the Burmese in the mid 1700's and many of the gems and treasures from the temples were moved the Yangon at the Shwedagon Pagoda (another very impressive site if you visit Burma). I have visited Ayutthaya a number of times while living in Thailand, but a few weeks ago I joined a small travel blogger group and we toured a few of the most important temples, and I also snuck away for some food and refreshment! The Ayutthaya historical park is the most significant section of the city, an area where there's a concentration of temples and historical sites to visit. The city in now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The first temple we stopped at was Wat Yai Chai Mongkon (วัดใหญ่่ชัยมงคล), a must visit temple in Ayutthaya. The temple is recognized by its huge chedi that leans a little to the side, sort of like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. At the site, you can then climb a flight of stairs to the middle level section that offers a nice view of the surroundings. Surrounding the temple are many statues of Buddha, most of them wrapped in orange cloth and in many symmetrical patterns. Just like Wat Pho in Bangkok, there's also a reclining Buddha, though this one made of stone and wrapped in yellow cloth instead of gold. I had visited the temple before, but had never stopped to see the palace of King U-Thong and his many roosters. After Wat Yai Chai Mongkon (วัดใหญ่่ชัยมงคล) in Ayutthaya we proceeded to Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร), a temple that's famous for housing a 19 meter high golden seated Buddha. The temple is a cross between traditional Thai and Chinese beliefs so there are lots of cross similarities and the temple is very Chinese Confucian in appearance. There are many section of Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร), and you can spend some time walking around each section of the temple. It's nearly always busy and bustling with people, especially on the weekends. Finally, the famous Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ) is one of the most visited and well known temple complexes in the Ayutthaya historical park. It's the temple where the famous head of Buddha wrapped within the banyan tree is - that's always a favorite place for everyone to take pictures! The rest of the temple is not in that great of condition, but it's mostly in ruins. The temple is still nice to walk around for a few minutes.
Ayutthaya is hot, and when you are walking around the temples, you're going to sweat for sure! So be prepared for the sun and always remember to drink plenty of water. I also like to stock up on hydration by having a fresh coconut to drink the water. Finally, whenever you visit any city in Thailand it's important to eat and to bring back some of the local speciality snacks. In Ayutthaya there's nothing more famous than a sweet called roti sai mai (โรตีสายไหม), and if you don't eat this, many Thais will say you didn't even go to Ayutthaya. It's basically a thin crepe pancake that's combined with cotton candy like sugar, wrapped into a little taco and consumed. It is very sweet and full of sugar, but it is the taste of Ayutthaya and should be sampled! Have a great trip visiting the ancient capital city of Thailand!

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is an ancient capital and modern city in the Central Plains of Thailand, 85 km north of Bangkok. Ayutthaya was one of Southeast Asia's most prosperous cities in the 17th Century and beyond. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, a vast stretch of historical site in the heart of Ayutthaya city, is now an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There were three palaces in Ayutthaya: Grand Palace, Chantharakasem Palace (the Front Palace) and Wang Lang (the Rear Palace). The largest temple in Ayutthaya, known for its distinctive row of restored chedis is Wat Phra Si Sanphet.
An impressive building that houses a large bronze cast Buddha image is the temple of Viharn Phra Mongkol Bopit. Southwest off the island is Wat Chaiwatthanaram, the temple that graces the official tourist pamphlet for Ayutthaya. Many intact pagodas surround a central chedi. A nice view of the city can be had from the top. Other important buildings include Wat Mahathat, Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Yanasen, Wat Phra Ram, and Wat Thammikarat.

Ayutthaya, the Ancient Capital of Thailand (Siam)
Ayutthaya is an ancient capital and modern city in the Central Plains of Thailand, 85 km north of Bangkok.
Founded around 1350, Ayutthaya became the second capital of Siam after Sukhothai. Throughout the centuries, an ideal location between China, India, and the Malay Archipelago made Ayutthaya the trading capital of Asia and even the world. By 1700 Ayutthaya had become the largest city in the world with a total of 1 million inhabitants. In foreign accounts, Ayutthaya was called Siam, but many sources say the people of Ayutthaya called themselves Tai, and their kingdom Krung Tai, 'Tai Kingdom'.
Many international merchants set sail for Ayutthaya, from diverse regions as the Arab world, China, India, Japan, Portugal, the Netherlands, and France. Merchants from Europe proclaimed Ayutthaya as the finest city they had ever seen. Dutch and French maps of the city show grandeur with gold-laden palaces, large ceremonies, and a visiting flotilla of trading vessels from all over the world. All this came to a quick end when the Burmese invaded Ayutthaya in 1767 and almost completely burnt the city to the ground.
Today, only a few remains give a glimpse of the impressive city they must have seen. Its remains are characterized by the prang (reliquary towers) and big monasteries. Most of the remains are temples and palaces, as those were the only buildings made of stone at that time.
In 1969 the Fine Arts Department began with renovations of the ruins, which became more serious after it was declared a historical park in 1976. The great cultural value of Ayutthaya's ruins was officially recognized in 1991, when the historic city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its proximity to Bangkok make it a popular day-trip destination for travellers from that city.

Ayutthaya Thailand: Things to do in Ayutthaya, ancient temple ruins and Ayutthaya night market
This travel vide outlines some of the things to do in Ayutthaya Thailand, how to get to Ayutthaya and what to do in Ayutthaya when you get there. I took the train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya which is the cheapest way to get there and after a day tour around the Reclining Buddha I get to enjoy sunset in the ancient Ayutthaya temple ruins, and to watch some of the Ayutthaya temples light up (some of the temples are floodlit at night). After sunset at the temples I wander through the night market and pick myself up something to eat before heading back to my hotel.
Ayutthaya is the ancient capital of Siam (or Thailand), and well worth a visit if you are interested in the history of Thailand or just to escape from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok city. It is possible to visit Ayutthaya in a day trip from Bangkok.
Tomorrow I take the train back to Bangkok, and prepare for my flight out of Thailand and on to Vietnam.

Wat Mahathat, “the temple of the Great Relic” was one of the most important temples in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on the historical island the large monastery features a huge central prang, a very large principal viharn and ubosot and a great number of subsidiary chedis and viharns. The upper part of its once massive central prang has collapsed. Today only the base remains.
One of the temple’s most photographed objects is the head of a stone Buddha image entwined in the roots of a tree.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet, “the temple of the Buddha Si Sanphet” was the most important temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Being part of the Royal Palace complex, the very large monastery with dozens of structures was used by Ayutthaya Kings only; it was a Royal temple without resident monks.
In its heydays mid 17th century the temple consisted of a raised platform supporting three very large gilded bell shaped stupas and three gilded mondops, an enormous viharn enshrining a 16 meter tall gilded Buddha image, as well as dozens of smaller chedis and chapels

The Ayutthaya Historical Park comprises of the ruins of temples and palaces of the capital of the ancient Ayutthaya Kingdom. The park is located on an island surrounded by three rivers where the old capital used to be. The Ayutthaya Kingdom, which existed from 1351 until 1767 was one of the largest and most prosperous empires of its time. The ruins of many impressive temples and palaces give an impression of the wealth of the ancient Kingdom.
The remains of several settlements off the island built by foreign countries demonstrate the importance of Ayutthaya’s intensive trade with many foreign nations.
As most of Ayutthaya’s records were destroyed when the city was looted and burned by the invading Burmese in 1767, much knowledge about Ayutthaya’s history was gained from the accounts and maps of foreigners. Several museums including the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum on the Ayutthaya island exhibit a wealth of artifacts discovered during excavations. The Ayutthaya Historical Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
