Western Azalea, Azalea Park in Brookings Oregon
Cleared away competing vegetation around this Western Azalea (Rhododendron Occidentale), and wanted to show its health. Note the moss and the age of the branches, the new growth coming in from the bottom, and the health of the more woody parts of the plant near the base. I've seen those lower parts break off very easily when the plant gets old, and old branches can become weak and dry. This plant receives little shade. I'd rate its health at around 2.5 out of 5, and I feel it would benefit from the removal of the old branches.
I let Youtube run its stabilization on the video, looks like it turned out pretty well.
Proposed Tree Cutting Location, Azalea Park in Brookings Oregon
Video showing the 37 fir trees along Lundeen Lane at Azalea Park in Brookings, Oregon. Footage captured on or about 09 June 2015. The project was approved by the City; see Important Update at the end of this summary.
In a letter dated 29 January 2015, the Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative proposed a joint venture with the City Manager Gary Milliman to remove the trees. The Cooperative cited a danger of the trees falling on the apartment complex, Kidtown, the substation, or the power lines. This danger became particularly poignant after one of the trees *did* fall, and was considered a near miss. The tree was removed on 16 December 2014 by the Western Pacific Tree Service.
Note the proximity of the trees to homes on Lundeen Lane, to the Kidtown area, and particularly to the powerlines and to the substation across Old County Road. The building in the center of the trees is the Azalea Park Foundation tool shed. An attempt was made in the video to demonstrate the height of the trees and the nearness to homes, a playing area for children, and a part of the city's infrastructure. Consider that not only would a tree fall, a broken power line could also fall with it onto one of these locations. In addition to this danger, power outages that could result from damage to the substation or to the transmission line could occur, and the extent is described in full detail in the letter.
The full text of the letter to the City Manager, and the notes to propose the concept to the Brookings Parks and Recreation Commission, can be found publicly available in the Agenda for the Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting for 28 May 2015 in the Agenda and Minutes section of the Brookings Oregon city website. Link provided here for your convenience.
Following deliberation of the letter and proposal after it was presented by Parks & Technical Services Supervisor Mr. Anthony Baron, the present members of the Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously to approve the proposal and send it forward to the next deciding body for the City of Brookings. Please note that the minutes for this meeting have not yet been posted at the time of the uploading of this video, so you will have to take my word on it as a person who was there for this meeting! I will update this video if/when those minutes are posted, or when some other confirmation is made of the decision.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature the Douglas Fir (which I believe these are) is stable, and meets the 'Least Concern' category for whether or not it is a threatened species.
The range of the common Douglas Fir can be found in digital representations hosted on the website of the United States Geological Survey.
Update: The removal has been approved. There is no date just yet as to when this removal will occur. I may call the City Manager during regular work hours to find out when this is planned.
Update: The rough time for the removal has been approved. A week is proposed as the time-frame for the removal. I'll upload a new video if I can capture footage of this process.
