debramasterofwine.com
Debra talks Barolo with one of the queens of the King of Wines, Chiara Boschis of Azienda Agricola E. Pira e Figli a winery located in the village of Barolo in Piemonte, Italy. She talks about Piemonte and the 11 villages encompassed within the Barolo DOCG and the conditions that Barolo producers work with in the region. They go on to discuss Chiara's family history (nine generations of winemakers!) and how the women's liberation movement gave her the freedom to break out on her own as a winemaker, as well as explain the amazing spirit of winemaking in Barolo in the 80's and 90's.

E Pira Chiara Boschis Offering
Over the course of two decades this winery has produced one of the top wines made in Barolo every single year. Even in difficult vintages these wines really shine, like in 1994 when E. Pira was the only Barolo to receive the coveted Three Glass award from the Gambero Rosso. The 1995 is also one of the best wines that we have tasted from this very good vintage, but the 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 vintages of this wine are at another level. E. Pira has quickly risen to the top in an area that has had so many superstars emerge over the last ten years. The Piedmont has seen an unprecedented string of outstanding vintages from 1996-2001 and then 2004-2011 each vintage being different but all of them offer wines of unprecedented quality.

Killer Rating- E Pira Barolo Cannubi 1999
The end of the year means many hours in the store so we start getting a little loopy this time of the year. One of our customers in the store the other day remarked on how funny they thought the Wine Watch videos are and this reminded me that we have not done an intentionally funny video for quite some time- actually all year. So for your entertainment we bring back one of our special correspondents, Giuseppi Pallatini, to help me sell one of my favorite wines Barolo, more specifically E. Pira Barolo Cannubi and one of my favorite vintages of one of my favorite Barolos. This is what I call KILLER wine!!

Sale! Luigi Pira Barolo Offering
The 2009 vintage was a warm year and the wines are already very showy with a good amount of juicy forward fruit with an abundance of ripe round tannins. Even though the Barolo from the 2009 vintage will last another couple of decades in your cellar as these wines have incredible balance, it will be hard to resist drinking these wines early. But that’s why god made vintages like 2009 so you have something to drink while you wait for the classic 2008 and the newly released KILLER 2010 vintage Barolo to mature in your cellar.

Barbara Sandrone Compares their two Barolo: Cannubi Boschis & Le Vigne
Across the road from Barolo's Cannubi Boschis, the northern most vineyard portion of the revered Cannubi hill, lies the scenic Luciano Sandrone estate. Luciano left the Marchesi di Barolo winery in 1990 on the heels of crafting out the outstanding ’89 and never looked back, today one of the Barolo stars of the region.
For the Cannubi Boschis, Luciano harvests & vinifies his grapes from three mostly south facing separate sub-plots while the Le Vigne is a blend of grapes from four separate plots in Barolo, Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba, & Novello. Starting in 2011, Villero fruit will also be added. Both Barolo are aged for a length of four years.
In this video, Luciano’s daughter Barbara, speaks about the differences between the two Barolo and as you will gather, these are wines that deserve some space in your cellar.

Cannubi: A Vineyard Kissed by God - World Premiere at Hong Kong's Domani - JamesSuckling.com
On the evening of June 4 at the prestigious Domani Restaurant in Hong Kong, the premiere movie screening for James' feature documentary Cannubi: A Vineyard Kissed by God took place. Over 200 people attended the screening, and the event included a typical Piemontese dinner that was served while the movie was being watched. The film additionally premiered online at JamesSuckling.com where nearly 3,000 people watched it worldwide.
Domani manager Stefano Bassanese and executive chef Andrea Spagoni created a fabulous menu for the night, which included Piedmont specialties such as vitello tonnato (veal with tuna sauce), crudo di fassone con tartufo nero (fassone beef tartar with black truffle), agnolotti del plin al sugo d'arrosto (plin agnolotti pasta filled with meat, veal stock sauce), guancia di wagyu brasata al Barolo con polenta bramata mantecata (Barolo braised wagyu beef cheek with soft creamy polenta), and bunet extra fondente (extra dark Piemonte chocolate pudding).
The dinner was paired with some of the finest Cannubi wines from 10 of the best producers: Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2009, G.B. Burlotto Barolo Cannubi 2009, Borgogno Barolo Cannubi 2008, Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cannubi 2007, Marchesi Di Barolo Barolo Cannubi 2007, Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Cannubi 2006, Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2005, Ceretto Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo 2003, Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi 2008, and Francesco Rinaldi Barolo Cannubi 2008. Attendees could enjoy the wines while watching Cannubi producers explain their passions and feelings for one of the most sought-after vineyards on earth in the film.
James also used his special Lalique wine glasses for the event -- James Suckling 90+. These are the same form as the 100 Points universal wine glass but without the expensively elaborate stems.
Guests at the premiere included some of Hong Kong's VIP wine collectors and well-respected members of the business community, as well as the Italian Consul General to Hong Kong, Ms. Alessandra Schiavo.
