This gem on Sao Miguel, has been around for over 600 years and is one of the most unique European cities I've ever encountered. Final Video of my Iberian Peninsula Trip/Ponta Delgada, Portugal
The final episode for my Iberian Peninsula trip, and its a bitter sweet moment saying good bye to my travel buddies and Europe. I make one quick final stop in Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island, the capital of the Azores archipelago of Portugal in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. My host Fabiano, was an amazing person and took care of me, took me on a short little drive to get a small taste of his Island, and dropped me off at the airport, to catch my plane back home =(

Why YOU should visit São Miguel, Portugal
If you are an adventurer and love exploring the outdoors this is your island! We recommend renting a car (rentals are extremely affordable). Despite the island being small, some of the well known destinations can take 45 minutes or more to drive to.
The Azores are becoming increasingly popular and with cheap flights from Delta, TAP and Azores Airlines you can get there on a direct flight from a few major US cities. Instead of an extended weekend trip to Vegas- head to the islands!

Terra Nostra Gardens & Furnas Hot Springs in Ponta Delgada, Azores - What to Do on Your Day in Port
On our port call in Ponta Delgada in the Azores, we took a shore excursion we bought onboard the Jewel of the Seas. The name of the tour was Terra Nostra Gardens & Furnas Hot Springs. And as the title says, we went to those places on the Island. The tour also stopped in the town of Riberia Grande on the North shore of the island. The price was $70 US each. It was a very good tour for the money. We really enjoyed it.

Ponta Delgada is the largest municipality and administrative capital of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in Portugal. It is located on São Miguel Island, the largest and most populous in the archipelago. The City of Ponta Delgado has 44,403 residents, with approximately 20,113 in the three central parishes that comprise the historical city: São Pedro, São Sebastião, and São José. Ponta Delgado became the region's administrative capital under the revised constitution of 1976; the judiciary and Catholic see remained in the historical capital of Angra do Heroísmo while the Regional Assembly was established in Horta.

AZORES: Ponte Delgada city - São Miguel Island
Ponta Delgada started off as a humble fishing community and gained importance from 1522, following an earthquake that destroyed the island’s former capital, Vila Franca do Campo. It was King João III that gave Ponta Delgada its city status in 1546. Throughout the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the busy port became an obligatory stopping and supply station for ships en route from the Mediterranean, Portugal and Africa to the Americas and the West Indies.
Jardim José do Canto is a botanical garden. José do Canto (1820-1898) was a cultured wealthy man and a nature lover. Well versed in the secrets of botany, he established contacts with botanical gardens and nurseries from around the world, from whose he bought, sold or exchanged plants. The current garden, with an area of 5,8 ha, does not have the botanical wealth of the time of its creator, but remains a place of great landscape and botanical intererst.
Jardim António Borges is a public park/garden, one of the largest and most lush areas in Ponta Delgada. António Borges da Câmara de Medeiros (1812-1879) was an avid amateur botanist, interested in introducing new species to the island. His property became an extremely rich and interesting garden. It was acquired by the City Council in 1957.
