Foreigner on a Giant Unicycle in Fukushima, Japan
Back in October of 2007, three months after I first arrived in Japan, I was interviewed by the local news station--Fukushima TV.
The newslady was thoroughly impressed with my 36 unicycle, so after meeting up at a park we went over to Azuma Sports Park where there's a unicycle practice area for elementary school kids.
Unfortunately it had rained quite a bit recently, so even though you can't tell from the video, the ground in the practice area was extremely slick. You couldn't really do proper turns or anything involving... having traction. Due to the lack of traction I fell a few times and really hurt my hip on one of them, and plenty of the kids also were falling onto the pavement. For obvious reasons, all of the falling was cut.
In the end I rode around with a bunch of the elementary school kids and generally had a grand ol' time.
Also, some people wanted to see the commercials, hence why I left those in.
Props also go out to Billy for interpreting for us; he was a CIR here in Fukushima.

The faint colors of the sunset are reflected on the surface of Lake Inawashiro. Azuma Sports Park offers a hazy view of the mountains. The movie follows two people who belong to the Fukushima Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. Takumi Akabane began rhythmic gymnastics after seeing a movie of an older student, and his dream is for men's rhythmic gymnastics to become an official Olympic sport. Mako Kakizaki trains hard every day by herself, so that she may one day impress many people with her performance. There is beauty in their single-minded devotion to their sport. Filmed: March 2014 in Fukushima City of Fukushima Prefecture
