This film belongs to a series of small videos from April 2012.
I visited my favorite places on the Baltic coast in Schleswig Holstein. The area around Kiel was from 1992 to 1995 my second home. Here I painted numerous oil paintings.
Dieser Film gehört zu einer kleinen Video-Serie vom April 2012. Ich besuchte mit der Kamera meine Lieblingsorte an der Ostseeküste in Schleswig Holstein. Die Gegend um Kiel war von 1992 bis 1995 meine 2. Heimat. Hier entstanden auch zahlreiche Ölgemälde.

Kiel is a port city on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast. In the old town, the rebuilt, medieval St. Nikolai Church hosts classical concerts. Holstenstrasse and Dänische Strasse are streets lined with shops. Along the Kiel Fjord, the Maritime Museum displays model ships and nautical instruments in a former fish auction hall. Cruise ships dock at the Ostseekai Terminal in Germania Harbor.
Some locals admit that Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, has a city centre that's grottenhässlich (ugly as sin). And unfortunately it is true; it was obliterated during WWII by bombing raids on its U-boat pens and then rapidly rebuilt. Today, it is a series of charmless indoor malls linked by pedestrian bridges. However, Kiel's grand harbour continues on as it has for centuries and this, along with the city's museums, should be the focus of your visit. Huge ferries transport millions of passengers to and from Scandinavia, while summer sees locals strolling the long waterfront promenade.
Kiel is a maritime city and has been for a long time, it remains one of Germany main passenger ports (besides Travemünde and Rostock) and as the Baltic endpoint of the Kiel Canal plays an important role in shipping. The beginning of the end of German monarchism happened here when in 1918 the admirals wanted the fleet to sail out for one last glorious but militarily pointless battle and the sailors told their superiors where they could shove that idea, ultimately culminating in revolution and the formation of Soviets.
During the Second World War, Kiel was severely bombed, because of its submarine-producing shipyard. Both civil and military ships are being built in Kiel nowadays and the tall cranes dominate the eastern shore of the Förde (fjord).
The bombing destroyed almost all historic buildings in Kiel; even the older looking buildings were built after WW2. So, if you come to the Kieler Schloss (Kieler Castle) don't be disappointed. There isn't much left of the original building. During the rebuilding after WW2, mostly modern architecture was used.

Motorradtagestour mit Conny, Heiko und Thomas vom Forum biker-treff. Die Fahrt startet von unserem Biketreff Back Tothe Roots in Braak bei Eutin. Hier sorgt Norbert für das leibliche Wohl. Mit Zwischenstopp am Rastorfer Krüz und an der Hochbrücke über den Nordostseekanal gehts zum Leuchtturm Bülk in Strande bei Kiel. Herrlicher Ausblick auf die Ostsee. Zurück nach Braak zum Abschlusskäffchen bei Norbert im Back Tothe Roots.

Aurora Borealis near Kiel, Nov. 7th, 2017
On November 7th, shortly after sunset a bright green aurora appeared over the Bay of Kiel. It lingered over the horizon for a while and then disappeared again while the moon came up.
It was just a short performance but the best aurora in over half a year down here in the very north of Germany! :)
There was also a decent amount of red and green airglow above the auroral arc which mixed with faint red aurora rays appearing from time to time.

Trister Sommertag am Leuchtturm Falkensteiner Strand in der Kieler Förde

We've been quite surprised by a strong Aurora outbreak during the night of May 05-06. Around 01:55 UTC+2 we already got our stuff together and went to our car but just as we arrived there the Auroras became strong enough to be wandering visibly for the naked eye for several seconds.
It was, by far, the most intense Aurora movement that I had seen so far. I'm really glad we didn't leave earlier, otherwise we would definitely have missed this awesome event.

In der Nacht vom 05. auf den 06. Mai wurde wir von sehr starker Polarlicht-Aktivität überrascht. Kurz vor 2 Uhr morgens packten wir unsere Sachen ein und gingen Richtung Auto, jedoch sahen wir, beim Auto angekommen, plötzlich mit bloßem Auge die Polarlicht-Strahlen wandern und bauten die Kameras schnell wieder auf... Die wandernden Strahlen waren für einige Sekunden sehr hell sichtbar, wenn auch nur farblos.
Es war (bezogen auf das Wandern der Strahlen) das mit Abstand intensivste Polarlicht, das ich bislang mit bloßem Auge sehen durfte. Ich bin echt froh, dass wir nicht schon früher abgebrochen und gefahren sind, sonst hätten wir dieses unglaubliche Event verpasst.
