Do whatever you have to do to keep us all safe. Barges create dangers in their wake
CINCINNATI, Ohio (WKRC)- The beautiful weather Saturday afternoon had people across the Tri-State looking to get out on the water in their boats.
“The weather has suddenly turned great and we’re enjoying that. This is the first weekend that we’ve really been able to get out on the water. So, we’re really looking forward to this,” Ernest McAdams, Jr the Commodore at the Four Seasons Yacht Club said.
John Englert has been boating for 20 years.
Just being outside. Just being on the water and the family time. It's great for the family,” Englert said.
Saturday was the first day him and his family went out on the water this season. Englert said he’s ready if he sees a barge while on the water.
You get away from them. Never ride in front of them or cross in front of them. You just go as far to the side as you can safely and get out of the way.
But a day of fun can turn tragic if you're not paying attention. Local 12's Christian Hauser got to ride along with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as it warned people to stay out of the way of barges on the river.
Barges may be big and slow but Matthew Meyer with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary said it can take them a mile to stop.
So, if you're within a thousand feet of that bow and you're broke down, it only takes a couple minutes to get to you,” Meyer said.
It’s easy to see a barge during the day but they almost become camouflaged in the dark.
The flashing lights that are on the bow and on the stern, they mix into the lights on-shore. So, you really have to be on your game at night especially,” Meyer said.
If you're leaving a concert at Riverbend or some other event on the water during the dark, that can lead to a dangerous situation.
You'll be driving along and you'll see one little light and sometimes the light's in the far back of the barge and here we are right in front of it and you turn to the side and you don't even see it,” Englert said.
Your life and the life of everyone on-board is in your hands. It's up to you to move out of the way of a barge.

Recovery search underway in Ohio River after BB Riverboats employee reportedly falls in
NEWPORT, Ky. (WKRC) - A search is still underway on the Ohio River after a BB Riverboats employee reportedly fell in Tuesday morning.
The rescue search has since turned into a recovery. Crews were out on the water until about midnight Tuesday. They returned to search on Wednesday.
They're using sonar equipment to locate the missing employee, who is a 34-year-old man who has worked for BB Riverboats for about a year-and-a-half. His name has not been released yet.
Family members of the man are on scene as crews continue to search for him. Local 12 was told the employee fell into the river between a barge and the Belle of Cincinnati. The owner of the BB Riverboats said there's security footage and they've handed that over to investigators to help them with their search.
Campbell County Emergency Management is taking the lead in this recovery. The deputy director, Greg Buckler, spoke about how the current and the depth of the river makes this a slow process.
We're estimating the depth to be 20 feet in the area. So, it's really not taking that long. It's a slow process. Once you find it on sonar, then you have to get the divers in, but first you go to find an object on sonar and you have to have the current play into it to see if someone went further than they went in, said Buckler.
The crews have been searching around the Belle of Cincinnati but the search could expand down the river Wednesday.
