In this video, we give you a review of the 50th Parallel Estate Winery, which is located in Lake Country, BC Canada, just North of Kelowna. It is a relatively new winery that has some great fragrant whites and one varietal of red, Pinot Noir, which is their flagship wine.
In late May, 2018 they will be opening a new restaurant, outdoor patio with food service and a new, beautiful, glass-enclosed tasting room. We will be back with an updated review, so subscribe to stay tuned.
Their Tasting Room is open 7 days a week. Check out their website for hours and for more information:

Peachland Is Paradise
The Top Eleven Reasons to live in Peachland (I tried to keep it to ten but just couldn't do it)
1 - The Location - We live where others come to vacation. We are in the heart of a recreation paradise and right next to 3 cities with access to their amenities but with a small town lifestyle.
2 - The Weather - A semi-arid desert climate with 2000 hours of sunshine and short mild winters.
3 - The Lake - Okanagan Lake is massive, has beautiful white sandy beaches and is a boaters paradise.
4 - The People - High volunteer rates, community minded, and active people.
5 - The Waterfront - restaurants, pubs, cafes, shops, spas, water fun park, and an 11 block lake front walkway.
6 - Things To Do - So many options in the backyard from hiking, to boating, to relaxing, to dining, camping, skiing, golfing, live music, events, wine tours and more!
7 - Food & Drink - select from fine dining, pubs, live music, cafes, sushi, German and a more right here in Peachland. See our West Kelowna picture selection to see what is only 5 minute beautiful drive away.
8 - Proximity to 3 cities - Kelowna, West Kelowna and Penticton are all close by to enjoy and explore.
9 - Living Options - From farms, to condos, to homes, building lots, to acreages and even assisted living. You can go from your starter house right up to multi-million dollar homes with stunning lake views.
10 - The Scenery - Combine the massive lake and surrounding mountain ranges with sunrises and sunsets for indescribable visual experiences. See what we mean in the Pictures section and our video link. PeachlandIsParadise.com

Anahim Lake
Anahim Lake is a small community in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The village and surrounding areas (including nearby Nimpo Lake) have a population of approximately 1500. The Ulkatcho First Nation has 729 living on nearby reserves. Every July, the Anahim Lake Stampede showcases local talent and is the area’s major social event. Anahim Lake supports three general stores, one motel, a restaurant. It is situated on Highway 20, 320 km. west of Williams Lake, 140 km east of Bella Coola.
One major industry of Anahim Lake is forestry. This industry has been hurt by the pine beetle epidemic sweeping through Western Canada. In the summer of 2006, the lumber mill of Anahim Lake closed down and laid off dozens of mill workers. However, the mill has recently re-opened at half capacity. Other local industries include cattle farming, sport fishing, and mushroom picking. The area is famous for its numerous world class fresh water fishing lodges and resorts that bring in enthusiasts from around the world.
Anahim Lake Elementary Jr. Secondary is a public school that is part of School District #27 that serves students from Kindergarten to Grade 10. The school has been in use since it was built in 2006. The current Principal of the school is Mr. Mikel Brogan.
Anahim Lake is home to the National Hockey League's (NHL) goalie and Olympic gold medalist Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens.
Anahim Lake is the namesake for the Anahim Volcanic Belt, Anahim hotspot and Anahim Peak.

This Rare Cheese Is Infested With Live Maggots
“Casu marzu” literally means “rotten cheese,” but in Sardinia, it’s a glory to behold. What starts off as a regular wheel of pecorino is then visited by cheese flies that lay their eggs inside, giving the formaggio its signature zing. But, with a nickname like “the world’s most dangerous cheese,” you can be sure that along with the cheese comes some risky business. Still, a handful of artisans continue to produce the traditional cheese, cementing its status in Sardinian culture.

Beloved Restaurant Chains We Might Sadly Lose In 2020
No, we can't say for certain that these restaurants will be gone for good in 2020. After all, many of them are revamping their menus and business models in the hopes of staying afloat. But will they succeed? Here are some chains that might be closing in 2020 unless things turn around.
Hungry? Well, perhaps a pop into Perkins will do the trick. But good luck finding a Perkins restaurant. As of November 2019, there are only 300 Perkins locations scattered throughout the United States. While it's unlikely that every location will be boarded up by the end of 2020, the restaurant chain has definitely seen better days.
Perkins is in financial trouble. In August 2019, Perkins & Marie Callender's Inc., which merged in 2006, filed for bankruptcy protection, and 10 underperforming Perkins restaurants were closed. Business isn't exactly on the upswing, either. In September 2019, the restaurant group split after 13 years of partnership, and now Perkins is part of the Waffle House knockoff Huddle House.
The brand has blamed dwindling guest traffic, minimum wage hikes, and the labor market for its struggling restaurants. Those struggles, though, have been going on for years.
Filing for bankruptcy protection, closing multiple restaurants, and ending a once successful business relationship? None of this suggests good things are on the horizon, but perhaps it isn't all doom and gloom. Huddle House is reporting pretty strong business, so maybe some of that energy can be transferred over to Perkins.
We wish we could tell you Marie Callender's is in good shape, but unfortunately, that's not the case. In fact, it's safe to say Marie Callender's is seriously struggling right now, so gather ye pot pies while ye may!
The warm, home-cooked happiness of Marie Callender's pot pies. So delicious because we start from scratch!
There are only 28 Marie Callender's restaurants still operating, and it's worth noting that there were nearly twice as many locations still open in 2017. It doesn't take a mathematician to see that this spells bad news for a brand. In August 2019, the brand lost 19 locations, but a Salt Lake City location did later reopen. So there's that?
While Marie Callender's has been around since the 1940s, it was clearly the weaker link in the partnership with Perkins. Perkins was sold to Huddle House for $51.5 million, but Marie Callender's fetched a far lower price, selling for just $1.75 million. It wasn't picked up by another brand, but it was purchased by a new company that named itself Marie Callender's Inc. The brand is having a tough time competing with similar chains such as the Black Bear Diner.
Long story short, if you have a Marie Callender's in your town, enjoy it while you can.
Rotisserie chicken restaurants aren't exactly spreading like wildfire these days, and even Boston Market is struggling to stay afloat. In fact, numerous locations are on the chopping block, even though the chain offers slow-roasted chicken that's free of antibiotics.
In a world of fake, fried and frozen, Boston Market promises to make food good.
In July 2019, the company announced that 10 percent of its stores would be closing for good. In a letter, CEO Frances Allen claimed these closures were necessary, writing that:
We must take steps to ensure our operational structure will support long-term sustainability. Part of that effort involves continuously analyzing our geographic footprint and real estate portfolio to assess the ongoing viability of locations.
Unfortunately, sales were down in 2018, too. In fact, Boston Market's financial troubles go back at least 20 years. Before Boston Market was bought and subsequently sold by McDonald's, the chain filed for bankruptcy in 1998.
The company is clearly hoping to turn things around, offering a new loyalty program, menu additions, and a revised branding strategy to accompany mobile ordering. Only time will tell if this bird is cooked for good.
Keep watching the video to find out more about restaurant chains that we might sadly lose in 2020.

Overnight hike to Petain Falls in Elk Lakes provincial park, BC - Shoulder season backpacking
Chef Evan Robertson and I packed extra gear to deal with the cold temperatures expected in the Canadian Rockies during the shoulder season (Oct-Nov). Even also packed extra groceries for episode 3 of our Gourmet Cooking in the Backcountry series. We're still experimenting with the concept, and we have lots of good ideas.
We laced our boots and drove to the trail head near Kananaskis Lake in Peter Lougheed Park. Our ultimate destination is the magnificent Petain Falls. Mount Pétain is located on the border of Alberta and British Columbia on the Continental Divide. It was named in 1918 after Marshal Philippe Pétain - at the time an honored war hero by Canadians as well as by other World War I allies. The name was retained despite the later reversal in Pétain's reputation after his having been Head of State of Vichy France.
The snow-capped mountain can also be reached from Height of the Rockies Provincial Park.
From Peter Lougheed park we hiked to the Alberta / British Columbia border and crossed into Elk Lakes provincial parks. This is one of the newest provincial parks in the Rockies.
We stayed overnight at a decommissioned campground just west of the Upper Elk Lake. The next day we hiked to the falls before heading back home via a slightly different route.

There's so much more to the history of Canada's Chinatowns and the country's Chinese Canadian heritage—do not stop with us. Our aim is to make our channel a gateway drug. A great starting point, which proved an invaluable resource for us, is Simon Fraser University's community-based research initiative 'From C to C: Chinese Canadian Stories of Immigration':
This episode doesn't even break the surface of what is a deep well of stories, historical figures, and pivotal events through which Chinese immigration shaped the course of the country's history. In our eyes, we no longer think of the colonization of Canada through the lens of two nations interacting with the Indigenous, but three. So next time you step through a paifang or Chinese arch in your town or city, or see a Chinese restaurant or street sign, we hope you stop and consider the historical weight behind them.
We've barely touched on the construction of the railroad, we haven't even mentioned the riots in Vancouver, we haven't focused on the Chinese diaspora across the nation, nor have we even uttered a word about Chinese Canadian cuisine—down the road, there's a whole series of episodes to make if the channel survives.
Notes:
The image we included as a depiction of Lee Chong (his name is spelled differently in many different sources—the frontrunners being Lee Chong and Lee Chang) is only that: a representation. One of the roadblocks to this episode was the fact the era of Chinese Canadian history from 1858 to 1900 is sparsely documented (or too expensive for us to license). Lee Chong would/should be considered a Founding Father of Victoria, but there is no visual evidence for him—only written documentation, newspaper ads, and signage—and we think that puts sharing his story at a disadvantage. We want to bring history to life so viewers are able to picture/identify with historical figures regardless of the country's shoddily documented past, so when there is no visual record of a historical heavyweight like Lee Chong we supplement their presence with edited, historically accurate portraits of other people. To us, it's the same thing as modern re-enactments with actors—if not more accurate. For Lee Chong, we found a photo of a late 19th Century, Southern Chinese, gentleman—a business magnate. His wife? Well, the Canadian Consulate General of Hong Kong and Macao referred to the image we used as being a portrait of Mrs. Kwong Lee (that's the only way she's ever referred to)—we suspect it was a portrait of a different Chinese Canadian woman that has been run through a rumour mill, but it remains historically accurate in terms of location and time period. Our other option was to have black silhouettes or omit their characters entirely—we hope you agree it was worth it to do it this way.
If other arches were built between 1912 and 1981, we could not find them. We referred to a research exhibit (which included a focus on the arches) put together by the University of Victoria that used to be available to the public a few years ago, but has since been made private, solely for the eyes of students of the university (which is pretty lame).
Addendum (there's much more than this):
The Chinook Language (or Jargon). We initially had a section in the episode dedicated to outlining how Chinese immigrants were able to build successful businesses in a land of many different alien languages . The tool they used to communicate was a jargon developed solely in the Pacific Northwest for the purposes of trading and communicating between the plethora of different nationals who flooded there during the gold rush(es). Due to the episode's length, and the fact the Chinook language deserves its very own episode, we had to cut it.
The Bachelor Society of Chinese Canadians up to World War II. In previous cuts, we had a section detailing some of the ramifications of the Head Tax Bill (a bill that required all Chinese immigrants to pay hundreds of dollars to enter the country—in modern times, tens of thousands). We had to cut it to keep the pace moving, but the focus was on the fact that the vast majority of Chinese immigrants were men—98% or so. Chinese women were either married or sex workers, and the Head Tax made it impossible to bring families across the ocean. It's a story for another episode focused on Vancouver and Alberta.
If you're ever in Victoria's Chinatown, check out the totally-not-a-tourist-trap Fan Tan Cafe because the food there is great.
Palm Springs revamps trailer park with mid-century tiny homes
Built in the 1940s, the Palm Canyon Mobile Club was showing its age when the owners approached realtor Paul Kaplan about helping to sell new homes in the park. Kaplan suggested a fresh start:investing in tiny homes instead of traditional mobile homes.
Rather than partnering with a prefab designer or tiny home architect, they chose to work with a traditional mobile home manufacturer because of the scale of the project (100 homes).
Working with manufactured home builder Silvercrest, they pushed for a modern, Midcentury-inspired design more fitting of Palm Springs and avoiding some of the hallmark details of conventional mobile homes like ceiling moldings and six-panel doors.
There's also a stigma against mobile home parks, explains Kaplan. You know the whole trailer trash kind of thing, and I think people are re-looking at it and seeing it really provides a nice sense of community. The Palm Canyon Mobile Club has a renovated pool and clubhouse with workout room and community kitchen. The houses start at $115,000 for the 600 square foot model, with a $650 monthly rental fee for the site.
