This 1943 educational / training film (originally titled as ‘A Welcome to Britain’) introduces US soldiers to Britain and tells them what to expect, how to behave and how not to behave in Britain during World War 2. The film aims to explain British culture and character. Starting with the ubiquitous pub visit, the film breezes through geography lessons, food, entertainment and traveling on the British Home Front. It was made by the Ministry of Information (United Kingdom) with the assistance of the US Office of War Information. Remarkably the film is not a patronizing propaganda piece like so many other similar productions made during the war.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
The United States and Great Britain have been firm allies for a century. Their mutually beneficial relationship particularly deepened during World War 2, when the circumstances of war brought hundreds of thousands of Americans through the British Isles.
The United States entered the war in December 1941, and American ground forces arrived in Belfast the following month. By February 1942 members of the U.S. Eighth Air Force were on the ground, building towards a strategic bombing campaign. American and British naval and air units cooperated in fierce battles for the control of the Atlantic. The U.S. troop build-up progressed quickly at first to support Operation Bolero, the buildup for a proposed invasion of France. Bolero was suspended amidst concerns that a 1942 or 1943 cross-channel invasion would be premature, and troops were diverted to North Africa and the Mediterranean. In the second half of 1943 the American buildup in Great Britain resumed in earnest.
The United Kingdom served as a critical base for American operations throughout the war. U.S. troops embarked from there for the invasion of North Africa in November 1942, and for subsequent operations in the Mediterranean. American units participating in the Combined Bomber Offensive and the air war over Europe were based in England. Great Britain served as the training ground and staging area for Operation Overlord, the massive amphibious invasion of Europe through Normandy on June 6, 1944 – D-Day. Over 1,600,000 American servicemen and women were in Great Britain as the invasion was launched. Numbers dwindled thereafter, but as late as April 30, 1945 there were still over 224,000 airmen, 109,000 communications zone troops, and 100,000 in hospitals or preparing to serve as individual replacements.
At the height of the American presence in Great Britain, American servicemen and women were ubiquitous through much of the island nation. They built or occupied vast encampments of their own, but also spent time in local pubs and establishments, toured the countryside, and befriended British families. Both nations established impressive programs to bring the two cultures together amicably, and to accommodate and entertain the visitors. Tens of thousands of American servicemen married English women, bringing them back to the United States after the war ended. American Forces Radio Network broadcast from the United Kingdom, bringing music and news from “home” to the British air waves. American Red Cross Service Clubs opened to entertain American servicemen off their bases. Pieces of American life and culture were seen and felt across the United Kingdom throughout the war, and Americans in turn took pieces of British life and culture home with them.

Challanger 2 British Main Battle Tank
The FV4034 Challenger 2 is a British main battle tank (MBT) currently in service with the armies of the United Kingdom and Oman. It was designed and built by the British company Vickers Defence Systems (now known as BAE Systems Land and Armaments).[3]
Challenger 2 is an extensive redesign of the Challenger 1. Although the hull and automotive components seem similar, they are of a newer design and build than those of the Challenger 1, and fewer than 5% of components are interchangeable. Challenger 2 replaced Challenger 1 in service with the British Army and is also used by the Royal Army of Oman. It has seen operational service in Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq.

Rome Destroyed The British By 200x
Please watch: The 10 Hottest Sex Positions Ranked By YOU
➨
-~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
Almost 200 years later in 61 A.D., another great stand by an underdog force occurred. Following the recent conquest of Britain by the Romans, the Britons united under Queen Boudica and decided to overthrow the Romans. Back then simply waiting for reinforcements to arrive from Rome was not really an option. The Roman governor of Briton was a man called Gaius Paulinus, and so what did Gaius do, he took his only two legions, numbering around 10,000 men and did what Romans were best at... outmaneuvering and outfighting anything the enemy could throw at them.
Paulinus chose the field of battle strategically, a narrow field that was flanked on either side by dense forest. The battlefield essentially acted as a giant funnel of death for the raging British warriors. Boudica’s forces numbered around 230,000, although this also included many women and children that made up the supply wagon train that trailed the actual army. The Roman’s however used this to their advantage. With a giant unruly wagon train behind them the British forces were effectively pinned in a narrow chokepoint against the infamous Roman shield wall. As if that wasn’t enough, Boudica’s troops were very lightly armored; Paulinus took full advantage of this and used his rear ranks to pump them full of javelins (known as pila). Those British troops that managed to avoid being impaled then had to wait in line to be butchered by the Romans, due to the narrow chokepoint.
The Romans also made sure to cycle the legionaries in the front line after every other wave of Britons, to prevent fatigue and ensure that the Britons were always facing fresh troops. When the overconfident Britons finally realized their folly and attempted to retreat, they found themselves penned in by their own wagon train. With nowhere to run they had no choice but to try and fight against the slowly encroaching and completely impenetrable Roman shield wall.
Roman historian Tacitus claimed that only 400 Romans fell, whilst over 80,000 Britons died, including Queen Boudica who supposedly poisoned herself. The Romans dealt a crushing blow to the rebellion, killing all the women, children and even pack animals that the rebels had brought to the battle. This victory ensured Roman control over southern Britain, whilst the North remained a volatile region.

Sea Lion: Why not just invade the UK in 1940?
Quite often people remark Hitler should just have finished off the UK before attacking the Soviet Union. Well, there are many problems with that assumption.

The History of the English Flag
Most people know that the Union Flag (sometimes incorrectly called the Union Jack by normies) is made up of the various flags of the United Kingdom combining things like the Scottish Saltire and the English Saint George's Cross. But what is the history behind these symbols and why were they adopted by these nations, and what is more, why these flags, and what about the competitors who if history had been different might have come to symbolise these nations. In today's episode, I'm going to explore the history and symbolism behind England's flag, the Saint George's Cross, as well as the other banners that were once seen as being representative of the English people.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN - Flight jacket
The American aviator and parachute pioneer, Leslie Leroy Irvin, designed the legendary Irvin R.A.F. Sheepskin Flying Jacket.
As the altitudes which pilots could fly got higher and higher, the temperature in those altitudes got lower and lower- easily reaching sub-zero degrees.
This situation drove Irvin to create the R.A.F. Flying Jacket, which was approved by the Air Ministry in 1932.
As the demand for this jacket surpassed all of Irvin's expectiations, he had to enlist the services of subcontractors and started producing his jackets in the UK.
The jackets continued being popular, but with the war going on, supplies were getting more scarce - including the supplies needed for the jackets (especially the sheepskin).
Therefore, a more efficient use of the material received was devised.
The large sheepskin panels were made by piecing together smaller panels- which resulted in a variation of the original R.A.F. jacket by having more seams. These seams were then strengthened by sewing leather strips (piping) over them.
The new R.A.F. jacket still had the basic main design giving it all the comfort of the original.
In the summer of 1940, the famous Battle of Britain air battle took place over Southern England and the channel.
These jackets were (also) worn during this event, and are therefore often reffered to as the Battle of Britain jackets.
This sheepskin jacket is produced by us exacly according to an original pattern. Our Battle of Britain Jackets also
received their own coloring- a somewhat lighter brown with a light reddish tint to it, and a darker brown sheep wool color
(see in the detail pictures)- which distinguishes it from the original R.A.F. Irvin Jackets.
Details:
· soft yet sturdy leather outside
· warm and cozy sheep wool inside- at least 15 mm thick
· authentic pattern and design
· up-turnable collar, securable with a buckle
· zippers at the sleeve ends
· adjustable leather belt/buckle at the waist
· under arm pleating for extra mobility
· two outer slash pockets- closable with zipper
· durable seams - strengthened with leather piping

Replanning London after the Second World War - Peter Larkham
How do you rebuild one of the world's largest cities? You need a cunning plan:
London was, during the Second World War, the largest and most obvious target, and the most badly-bombed city in the country. Ideas about rebuilding began very early, even during the Blitz itself. The number, scale and variety of plans was large, ranging from the “informal” – produced by individuals, and probably more for promoting themselves than as serious contributions, and a range of organisations – to the “formal”, produced by Borough Councils and other authorities, by their own staff or eminent consultants. Central Government was also involved, in urging some authorities to make plans, in recommending consultants, and in commissioning large-scale plans.
The hierarchy of official plans (for the City, County and Greater London) were the culmination of ideas about city structure, function and design, as well as approaches to planning, that had been developing before the war. They were hugely influential elsewhere in Britain and, through various forms of promotion, elsewhere in the world. This talk will explore the range of plans, what was proposed, and the gap between proposals and what was eventually – often years or decades later – actually built.
This lecture will be delivered as a part of the 2015 City of London Festival.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

The Industrial Revolution (18-19th Century)
Introduction to some of the elements of the Industrial Revolution, more on this subject to come!
The economic developments of the 1800s saw the development of agrarian and handicraft economies in Europe and America transform into industrial urbanised ones.
The term to describe this phenomenon would be known as the ‘Industrial Revolution’ and was first used by French writers, but made popular by English economic historian Arnold Toynbee.

The Largest Aircraft Ever Built By Britain: The Bristol Brabazon
With a wingspan greater than a Boeing 747, The Bristol Brabazon was the largest aircraft ever built by Britain. More a flying oceanliner than plane, it featured sleeping cabins, a dining room, a cocktail bar and lounge, and even a 23 seat movie theater.
The Brabazon was also fitted with cutting edge innovations. A fully pressurized, air conditioned cabin. Electric engine controls, and high-pressure hydraulics to operate its massive control surfaces. It’s enormous wing housed more than 16 thousand gallons of fuel, and eight of the most powerful piston engines available. While the first Brabazon used piston engines, later Brabazon were to use turboprop engines that were being developed by Bristol.
The Bristol Brabazon would have true transatlantic capability. Able to fly non-stop from London to New York against prevailing eastern winds. In the 1940’s, this would have been quite the feat. Transatlantic flights were almost always done in stages to allow for refueling.
Despite introducing new innovations, many of which influenced the future of aviation, the Brabazon’s driving philosophy was outdated. The Brabazon’s mission was to compete with ocean liners for ultra-wealthy passengers. But this lumbering, super-sized airliner would have been introduced with airlines for 1950’s, right around when the first jet airliners, like the De Havilland Comet, were taking to the skies. Aircraft like the Dash 80, which would become the 707, were also just around the corner, and would bring a transatlantic crossing down to as little as 7 hours.
After a massive design and development effort, Britain found itself stuck with a plane nobody actually wanted, designed for an era that no longer existed. The program was cancelled and the Brabazon, and half finished turboprop successor were sold for their weight in scrap. #BristolBrabazon #BritishAviation #WhiteElephant #Airplanes
