BR hills: The only Tiger reserve to house indigenous community
In this episode of Save Our Tigers campaign, we take you to BR Hills or the Biligiriranga Hills, which is an extremely bio-diverse and rich in its eco system. It's at the confluence of the eastern and the western ghats, which means it mixes the bio-diversity of both. Several species of the animals here are endemic to this area, it is also has a very rich biological wildlife corridor which goes all the way from Karnataka across into the Tamil Nadu. But another thing that makes BR Hills very unique compared to most of the other tiger reserves in country is that it's the only tiger reserve where the indigenous communities have the right to their land. They are allowed to live on their ancestral land in the tiger reserve and what is even more interesting is that they were given the right to conserve, making them stake holders in this whole effort to protect the tiger reserves along with the forest department. So the big question now is, will the pantheistic belief of the Soliga tribe and the work that has been done by the forest department, be worked together? And what does that really mean for the future of tigers in this landscape.

Bandipur Tiger Reserve , Karnataka || VLog
This National Park was formed by including most of the forest areas of the then Venugopala Wildlife Park established under Govt. Notification dated 19th February 1941 and the area was enlarged in 1985 extending over an area of 874.20 Sq.Km and named as Bandipur National Park. This reserve was brought under Project Tiger in 1973. Subsequently, some adjacent reserve forest areas were added to the reserve and extending to 880.02 Sq. Km. The present area under the control of Bandipur Tiger Reserve is 912.04 Sq. Km. An area of 39.80 Sq. Km of KFDC plantation area was handed over to this division during 2007-08. During 2010-11 the Nugu Wildlife Sanctuary was handed over to Wildlife Division, Mysore.
The Bandipur, Nagarahole, Wayanad, Mudumalai and Sathyamangalam Tiger Landscape are spread across the states of Karnataka (Bandipur-Nagarahole), Tamil Nadu (Mudumalai-Sathyamangalam) and Kerala (Wayanad). Is a fine example of managing inter-state Tiger Reserves for the long-term Conservation of Tiger Source Population. During 2010-11, Camera trap exercise along the Segur plateau-Moyar Gorge-Sathyamangalam region of Tamil Nadu gave evidence of resident Tiger population as well as the possible movement of individuals between this region and the BRT Tiger Reserve and onward to M.M. Hills & Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuaries. This landscape showed an overall increase in the Tiger occupancy in 2010 as compared to 2006 All India Tiger Estimation Exercise. The Tiger population on the Karnataka side (Nagarahole, Bandipur, BRT Tiger Reserves, M.M. Hills & Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and adjoining forest) was estimated at 231 Tigers (214-249) covering an area of 4,460 Sq. Km. Since, this Tiger population is contiguous with Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Wayanad in Kerala, and move across the state boundaries, this Tiger number is not unique to Karnataka, but are indicative for the state. The Bandipur Tiger Reserve along with Nagarahole, Mudumalai, Sathyamangalam & Wayanad Landscape is the source population in the Western Ghats landscape complex with an estimated Tiger population of about 382 (354-411), constitutes the single largest Wild population of Tigers in the world (Jhala et al, 2011). Currently, with the occupancy of Tigers over an area of 21,435 km2, comprising 21% of the total forested area of the Western Ghats this landscape complex holds 1/8th of world’s Tiger population (1/4th of India’s Tiger population) i.e. around 534 Tigers (500-568), an increase of 29.6% over the 2006 estimates of 412 Tigers (India: Tiger Estimate 2010, Ministry of Environment and Forests).
The Bandipur Tiger Reserve forms a very important component of 5520.00 Sq. Km. landscape, the first Biosphere Reserve in the country i.e. Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (Notified on 01-09-1986 vide order No. J.22010/6/86.CSC, Government of India under the Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme of the IUCN). This Landscape of Bandipur, Nagarahole, Mudumalai & Wayanad complex is home to single largest Asian Elephant population in the world (Varma et al. 2005) and is part of the Mysore Elephant Reserve (MER) notified vide notification No. FEE 231 FWL 2000, Dated 25-11-2002. The Reserve is endowed with rich floral and faunal diversity and is recognized as one of the Mega Biodiversity Areas in the country. The Tiger and the Elephants are the flagship and umbrella species for the conservation of all the Biota that this ecosystem represents. The viable population of these two species is indicative of a healthy Ecosystem.
Biogeographically, Bandipur Tiger Reserve lies in one of the richest biodiversity areas of our country representing “5 B Western Ghats Mountains Biogeography Zone” (Rodgers & Panwar, 1988), surrounded by Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the South, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in the South West & on the North West Side the Kabini Reservoir separates the Bandipur and Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. The Northern side of the Tiger Reserve is surrounded by a human-dominated landscape with villages and agricultural lands.

It is the largest species among the wild cattle, reaching a shoulder height of up to 220 cm (87 in).In Malaysia, it is called seladang, and pyaung
in Myanmar. The domesticated form of the gaur is called gayal (Bos frontalis) or mithun.

We visited K Gudi Wild life sanctuary on 31st March 2018.
This is so far most natural serene place in Karnataka. So peaceful, full of tree shades, cool atmosphere, and a descent wildlife, We didn't got much of the sightings, but even being at the location make you feel the calmness the place holds within.
This is a short glimpse of the place I could capture, I have not done the justice, but still I tried.
Thanks for watching!

Bandipur jeep safari - Karnataka
Exploring the wilderness of Bandipur National Park. Taking a jeep safari....
Bandipur National Park established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the south Indian state of Karnataka. It was once a private hunting reserve for the Maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore. Bandipur is known for its wildlife and has many types of biomes, but dry deciduous forest is dominant.
The park spans an area of 874 square kilometers (337 sq mi), protecting several species of India's endangered wildlife. Together with the adjoining Nagarhole National Park (643 km2 (248 sq mi)), Mudumalai National Park (320 km2 (120 sq mi)) and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (344 km2 (133 sq mi)), it is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve totaling 2,183 km2 (843 sq mi) making it the largest protected area in southern India.
Bandipur is located in Gundlupet taluq of Chamarajanagar district. It is about 80 kilometers (50 mi) from the city of Mysore on the route to a major tourist destination of Ooty. As a result, Bandipur sees a lot of tourist traffic and there are a lot of wildlife fatalities caused by speeding vehicles that are reported each year. There is a ban on traffic from the hours of dusk to dawn to help bring down deaths of wildlife.

The Biligirirangana Hills, commonly called BR Hills, is a hill range situated in south-eastern Karnataka, at its border with Tamil Nadu (Erode District) in South India. The area is called Biligiriranganatha Swamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary or simply BRT Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a protected reserve under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Being at the starting point of the Eastern Ghats and very close to Western Ghats, the sanctuary is home to eco-systems that are unique to both the mountain ranges. The site was declared a tiger reserve in January 2011 by the Karnataka government, a few months after approval from India's National Tiger Conservation Authority.[1]

Life's In BRT-Tiger reserve
Biligiriranganatha Swamy Temple Tiger reserve commonly known as BRT Tiger reserve, situated in Chamrajanagar, Karnataka. This reserve as holding many hill ranges with various forest vegetation. Thus this area supports a diverse flora and fauna in view of the various habitat types present. Apart from that this reserve act as a live bridge between Western and eastern ghats to facilate migration of animals. All the video clips were taken during my field work and i just want to make an video for kind of awareness regarding the forest and its wildlife.
BRT Tiger Reserve, Karnataka
There are many Tiger Reserves near to Mysore. BRT Tiger Reserve is one of them. It a must for someone who wants to spend some nature time. Visitors can travel from one entry point to exit point on a good condition road. Visitors can easily see wildlife while driving on this road.
Highly recommended for someone who is looking for a weekend getaway from Bangalore or Mysore.
Safari in K. Gudi Wilderness Camp - B.R.T. Wildlife Sanctuary (B.R. Hills)
Weekend safari in India - K. Gudi Wilderness Camp (Jungle Lodges & Resorts), B.R. Hills, Karnataka. Saw a leopard, a sloth bear, plenty of sambars, spotted deers, barking deers, a few elephants, Malabar giant squirrels, and lots of birds (crested serpent eagles, drongos, owlets, asian paradise fly catcher and more!)
Not too many mammals, considering the weather was hot and dry and best for wildlife viewing. Most of the watering holes were devoid of life.
The forest itself was quite beautiful -- lots of jacaranda trees, crocodile bark trees, eucalyptus trees. I can imagine K. Gudi will be great as a misty monsoon retreat.
On a side note, if you're interested in an African safari, visit
BR Hills Safari || Jungle Lodges and Resorts || Pack of wild dogs
My first safari since I got back in India. This is one of the things that led me back in India. The wildlife is incredible. Again a great experience with Jungle Lodges and Resorts. They manage a lot of resorts in Karnataka and I believe it's the best option for wildlife viewing.

BRT & Bandipur with Nature and Wildlife | ക്യാമറയുമായി ആനക്കൂട്ടത്തിന്റെ ഇടയിലൂടെ
The concluding video of our yet another enjoyed trip, Bandipur, Mysore, Sathyamangalam. The video starts with the drive through the BRT region and then we come back to Bandipur for breathtaking wildlife views. The nature and the 27 hairpin curve roads was most thrilling drive. An excellent route to enjoy the drive. However at certain times expect traffic congestion as heavy trucks and buses move in this narrow ghat road route.
