Today on Bura Bura Yama, I am riding Ano-Trail with my friends Yuto and Minami.
But before we start riding Minami has to deal with an air leak.
Or a punk, as it is called in Japanese.
Ano-Trail is on the border between Tokyo and Saitama prefecture.
It consists of two almost parallel ridges, on which we descent, and a creek along which we had to pedal up.
It is more of a trail system than a trail, and it is easy to get lost. That might be the reason why most English speaking riders call it “the maze”.
So, why then do I call it Ano-Trail? Well, originally I wanted to use the Japanese name. But the trail is so secret, that I was asked not to disclose its name. So I settled for Anonymous Trail, or Ano-Trail for short, which conveniently also means “that trail” in Japanese.
The trails here are maintained by Oku Musashi MTB Club. I will do a video on their other projects in the future. If you want to know more, check out the link in the description (above).
Ano-Trail might be the most popular spot for mountain biking in Tokyo. But we also met hikers and local people walking their dogs. As this is a shared trail, of course we slow down and great them friendly. I guess I will do a video on trail etiquette in Japan the future.
In this video we are riding the north ridge. Yuto is following me. I am filming with a Gopro Hero6 Black and a Karma Grip gimbal. Yuto has a Hero7 Black mounted on a Chesty. You can see that the Hero 7 has a great stabilization (called HyperSmooth), almost on par with the gimbal.
But it also produces a totally different sound. It was four times as loud as my Hero 6, and adjusting the sound was quiet nerve wrecking.
Also the GoPro HERO6 and HERO7 have three water proof microphones, which makes it extremely difficult to shield from wind noise. Reducing the bass in iMovie helped to some extend, but the sound is still not quite satisfying.
Ano-Trail is a great riding spot. It is not too far from the city and has nearly everything that makes for a good ride. Almost 15 km of single track, ridge lines, natural berms, roots, downhill sections and rock gardens, and of course excruciating climbs. You can spent a day of fun here or practice for your next enduro, if that‘s your thing.
So, how do you like Ano-Trail, and what do you think of the footage. Can the Hero7 hold up to the gimbal? Any idea what I could do to improve the sound? Any opinions on mountain biking in Japan you would like to share? Feel free to leave a comment.
In the next Video we will be riding the south ridge, which ends in pretty gnarly downhill section with lots of rocks and sharp turns. Ja matta yoroshiku ne!

Japan Travel Part 2 - Saitama Prefecture, Hamazushi, Mandai Shonantei
Travel Vlog 2

Bike ride in Japan
Sit back and watch Japan go by as I do the work.
Parts of my daily commute. 40 km round trip 5 days a week. About 60 min to go one way. Rain or shine I ride!
Why ride the train it takes the same time! It costs you money and the bike is a free health club. Maintaining the bike is way cheaper that a year of train fair. I am free I can stop where I want and when I want.
Station areas visited:
Omiya Warabi Ariajuku Others passed by
Rt 17,34,1 taken in Saitama
When I ride I need up to date weather info. I use the weather underground!
A day exploring Hanno, Saitama by bicycle. Saitama Cycling
Bike bagged (輪行袋) my huge 60cm Trek Emonda SL5 (barely) with my Tiago Cocoon & met a buddy out at Shakuji-Koen station to take train out to Hanno to introduce him to the amazing roads and scenery outside of Tokyo.
Hanno is about 40 minutes from Shakuji-Koen, or about 60 minutes from Ikebukuro, and taking the train saves riding at least 40km through built up areas with traffic.
Great weather, very little traffic and a nice gentle climb out towards the dam. Last week I gave up on the steep hill so pleased that I made it up the part with 15% to be rewarded with a nice ring road around the dam.
Better part of the day spent asking “I wonder where that road leads to?” then finding out, discovering new roads, several hills and places left for when I’ve lost 5-10kg to overcome gravity.
On the fastest long decent I was much more comfortable descending at speed, cornering etc on a bike with skinnier tyres than my Fairdale Weekender Drop.
On way back made time for a spot to walk in the river, then ???? ???? & ???? as the other options for lunch we’re all closed by our return.
All in all a good day out and getting better at using the bike bag too!

April 26, 2015 Road Bike Ride (Saitama & Tokyo)
This video is of my first road ride of 2015. It was quite short and on an unfamiliar course but the weather was beautiful so it was very enjoyable. It is not the most exciting piece of footage in the world, but it fairly representative of a flat land ride in this part of Japan.
