Trails Behind NCUE Mountain Campus in Changhua, Taiwan
In late June (Taiwan) I have to get out early to avoid the heat. The Ba Gua Mountain trail network offers shade, lovely fauna, birds, butterflies, and the occasional lizard. I have never seen any snakes, although I am sure they are out there in the jungle. The dirt trails lead to paved paths with lots of diversions such as fruit stands, a temple, the NCUE campus, parks, bridges, etc. Most importantly, there are plenty of places to run and hike without the traffic you would see on the cities of Taiwan.
These hikes are only minutes from the center of Changhua! There is a bit of a hill climb to get to trail heads. Note: For the dirt trail behind NCUE Mountain Campus, I recommend going up (not down) on the rocky path which begins behind the right most building's parking lot (right corner) walking over some railroad ties and heading up to San-Ching Gong temple (san as in the number 3, and ching as in the Chinese character for clear. There are several paths to follow, but they all lead to the same place if you are continuing up. One goes to a power-line tower and the temple is a short distance from that.
At the temple, where there is a large bilingual map, you can access other trail loops, or take the short Forest Trail which will lead down to a macadam path to get you back to the campus. Learn the characters for Shr Da (Teacher's College) and you should be okay because there are many signs.

Changhua County Library is on the Zhongshan road. There are u-bikes in the square. They can be used by the public. You can ride the u-bike from the Changhua Railway Station to this library. Before using the u-bike, we must have an Eazycard and we have to register our smartphone number in the machine. Eazycard can also be used in the bus, subway, and railway in Taiwan. Eazycard is stored value card. It must be stored money so it can be used. We can choose to store the value in every where, such as the service desk in the subway, or the 7-11 convenient store. Behind the Building of the library, you can find the trails and road to the Baguashan. Baguashan is a public park. The range of Baguashan is very large. Shan is transliterated from Chinese word and means mountain. The height is about 200 meters. Before your hiking, be sure to have enough snack, or food and water in your backpack.

Mt. Bagua Buddha Temple (Baguashan Buddha Temple)(八卦山佛寺)
Mt. Bagua Buddha Temple (Baguashan Buddha Temple)(八卦山佛寺)
Baguashan in Changhua is home to one of the tallest Buddha statues (22m-high) in Taiwan and in the world. Baguashan also has a large temple complex just behind it, as well as some nice parks where you can stroll around.
The Great Buddha Temple (大佛寺) behind the statue was built in the style of an ornate palace in 1972. The large temple is quite a rarity in Taiwan as it combines Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian beliefs into one single community. The first floor is dedicated to the greatest sage and teacher Confucius, the second floor enshrines Guan Yu (the Taoist God of War), and the third floor practices Buddhism and venerates Gautama Buddha as the primary deity. The golden-faced statue of Guan Yu and his sacred weapon that weighs 64kg are especially worth your attention. Besides, there are two 9-floor pagodas on both sides of the temple that serve as columbaria.
Never mind if you are not religious at all. At the front of Great Buddha is Changhua’s highest point and a great spot to stand — on one side you have the great statue, and on the other you have an excellent panorama of the city. On weekends, many locals come here to enjoy the golden sunset and wait for the lighted water fountains that dance to music each day and night.
Baguashan Skywalk
The structure of the skywalk is made with light steel frames and has fence-like linear appearance. The skywalk crosses Guashan Road from above the sky and is built along the mountain from the location of the Great Buddha. Seven entrances/exits are installed along the 1005 meters skywalk. The maximum altitude of the skywalk reaches 16 meters while the majority of the skywalk is between 6 to 7 meters. From the Great Buddha of Baguashan, the landmark of Changhua, the skywalk stretches all the way to National Changhua Living Art Center while passing through attractions such as Lotus Pond Ecological Park, the Martyrs Shrine, baseball stadium, Changhua Arts High School and others. Along the way, visitors can enjoy both dynamic and static attractions, and historical and cultural sites. You not only can enjoy high altitude horizon, you can also walk along the woods and experience the ecological beauty of the wood’s crown layer. This “Sky Bridge” is the longest skywalk in Taiwan.
How to get there?
From Changhua Station, You can ride a Taxi (Fare range: 120 - 250NT) or Walk around 20 to 25 minutes(Use google map)

Skywalks: Castles in the Air?
In recent years, Taiwan has been swept by a craze for elevated walkways in scenic spots. More than a dozen such skywalks have been built in just six years. Even though they''re touted as a way for tourists to get close to nature, ecologists say they cause serious damage to ecosystems and don''t help local economies as much as advertised. Let''s take a closer look at the debate around skywalks in our Sunday special report. The walkway on this vertical precipice is said to be the most hair-raising in Taiwan, and draws hordes of tourists. There used to be an ancient pathway on the rugged cliff here in Fengbin township, Hualien. The spot was recently pressed back into service, at the local tourist industry’s hour of need.Lin Ching-lungFengbin Township SecretaryThinking about the public purse, of course the government should make more use of it. If you don’t develop it, tourists won’t know it exists. As high as a 17-storey building, and with sweeping views of the sea, the walkway attracted a tourist influx that brought Fengbin’s tourist industry out of its doldrums.Lin Ching-lungFengbin Township SecretaryI also hope the media can help us change the way people refer to it. It’s an ancient seaside walkway. It’s not a ‘skywalk’, which is a popular term on the internet nowadays. But whatever you call it, the transparent glass walkway is certainly riding the coattails of the skywalk craze.Prof. Monica KuoLandscape Architecture Dean, CCUOf course walkways should just be an accessory to the main attraction, which is the natural world. But we’ve flipped that around. Now people think the skywalk is the main attraction. If you ask tourists what they saw, they might not have seen anything (else).Environmental groups are concerned that restoring the scenic old walkway has actually created new conflicts with the ecosystem.Hsu Ming-chienTaiwan Thousand Miles Trail AssociationThey chose to build the walkway with reinforced glass on the seaside cliff. So that cliff itself is prone to rockfalls, which can smash the glass. Then there’s the fact that the glass walkway is extremely difficult to maintain. It gets very slippery when it rains. If you don’t clean it regularly, once it gets covered with moss it’s no longer transparent. So managing and maintaining a skywalk is actually very costly.Trying to make the most of the skywalk craze, even Chiayi County Commissioner Helen Chang herself made a video to draw attention to a newly constructed bridge in her county.Prof. Wu Yi-yenTourism Dept., TNUI think it’s connected to the construction paradigm in Taiwan. Local leaders like highly visible construction projects. Such projects make an impression on the public. It was in order to make more of an ‘impression’ on local residents and tourists that the Changhua County government spent almost NT$90 million on a skywalk in the area’s most famous and historic tourist spot – Bagua Mountain.Originally the walkway was designed to enable visitors to roam the forest and experience the treetops firsthand. But no attention was paid to ecological conservation during its construction. Sixty-five ancient trees were cut down: a horrendous result for one of Taiwan’s most precious and unique ecosystems.Lin Shih-hsienChanghua County CouncilorThere are many birds of prey here. Even hawks fly through Bagua Mountain; this is their most important resting spot on their migration across Eurasia. Now you’ve suddenly destroyed the skyline. High up there in the sky, the hawks have very sharp eyes, and they can see that disturbance. So they don’t come over.Hsu Ming-chienTaiwan Thousand Miles Trail AssociationWhen there are thousands of people moving around there in a single day, the wildlife in the treetops will move away from the area, because of the human disturbance. Wanting to look at the ecosystem of the treetops is a very anthropocentric idea. The reality is that the wildlife will decide to leave of its own accord. That’s before you even mention how, after a year, there will be fewer visitors, but what are you going to do about this thing which is left sitting in the middle of nature?Prof. Wu Yi-yenTourism Dept., TNUOf course people want to see the beauty of the natural world. But we have to think about whether we want to destroy the natural world in order to take a look at it. Less than two years since its opening, visitor numbers at the Bagua Mountain skywalk have already plummeted by more than 70 percent.Prof. Monica KuoLandscape Architecture Dean, CCUWith better planning, once I’ve crossed the skywalk I can see a tea plantation, some cherry trees or camellias. I can make a circular walk and then leave, go somewhere and come back. We call this creating a recreational or aesthetic experience. But I don’t think it’s very meaningful if all you do is walk from one end of the skywalk to the other and take a photo on your phone. Some say that trying to revive tourism ...
Running in Taiwan: Hills of Changhua (Part 2)
JC and I jog/hike to the Four Faces Buddha (Thai Temple) in Changhua as part of our training for the Yuanlin Half Marathon coming up in a few weeks. On the way back, we encounter a few dogs, run on the scenic route 139, and finish up at another temple area. Here, we discover a new trailhead! (For future exploration). If you haven't watched Part I, Tips for Running in Taiwan, please check it out!
A Slot Canyon in Changhua, Taiwan!
My goal today was 12 miles. I was not concerned with time, so adding in a little hiking was okay, and I actually welcomed some hills since I do most of my training on flat roads. About half way though our run, JC suggests a new trail. Heck, I was game for anything new. Surely I have seen everything there is to see in Changhua....Boy, was I wrong! This was a slot canyon very near the Gray-nosed Buzzard viewing area on BaGua Mountain! I never new it existed.
It was perfect weather for running. 17 degrees C, and the air was in the green. After the canyon, we parted ways at the stadium and I jogged another three miles home to get nearly a half marathon of distance for this long run training day.
Shake off the Jet Lag - Let's Ride Baguashan Mountain
Ian Thomas of SparkJam and SayTaiwan rides with Lung Shin through the lush rolling hills between Changhua City, Baguashan and Ershui on County Road 139 near Taiwan's Central West Coast.
Bike to Farm and a Hike in Changhua, Taiwan
In April-May I will get a run in once a week, but it is about time to transition to some other cross-training activities as the summer approaches. I enjoy biking, hiking, and a bit of swimming when it starts to get hot in Taiwan.
Join me, as I take you out of the concrete jungle and off the beaten track to the foothills of the central-island mountain range!!!! If you are new to the Taichung area, a good place to start hiking is at the Dakeng Scenic Area. It has quite a few nice trails. Also, Guguan Hot Springs lets you combine hikes on forest trails and then relaxing in a hot bath!
