The Breathtaking Black House Museum, Baan Dam, Chiang Rai
This museum is the creation of artist Thawan Duchanee. It consists of about forty building spread over a several acre site. The art includes paintings, sculptures, constructions made from bones, horns and skins of dead animals, rock gardens, and the architecture of the buildings themselves. Thawan Duchanee was one of the foremost Thai artists of the 20th century. He worked in a number of different media and styles. The museum might be considered a bit creepy, due to all the dead animal parts, but it is actually quite peaceful. Wandering the grounds for a couple of hours perusing the art is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. The museum is located about 10 kilometers north of Chiang Rai City. Admission is 80 baht. If you go to see The White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, in the morning, this would be the perfect afternoon stop to take in the work of two of the great Thai artists of the last fifty years.

The Baan Dam Museum (also known as the Chiang Rai Black Temple or Black House Museum) is a museum and gallery that was home to the renowned Thai artist, Thawan Duchanee.
The attraction isn’t actually a temple per se, but a collection of around 40 buildings on a large property that showcase the skill of this artist. In Thai, “baan” means “home” or “house” and “dam” means “black”, hence the name.
Thawan Duchanee was a Thai artist who was born in Chiang Rai and studied art in Bangkok and then abroad in Amsterdam. His work remains controversial in Thailand, with many locals referring to the famous White Temple as ‘heaven’ whilst the Black Temple is referred to as ‘Hell’. The artist spent over 50 years building this museum of art. Of the 40 houses created around the property, they are made of wood, glass, concrete, bricks and terracotta with various unique styles incorporated in their design.
Visitors are welcome to come into the gardens and take a stroll around the many buildings located on site here. Some buildings cannot be entered, as the artist kept his bedroom and house private, but there are plenty of opportunities to enter some of the most impressive buildings and take a peek at their unique architecture. You will be able to view Thawan’s collection of paintings, sculptures, animal bones, skins, horns, silver, gold and other unique items which are placed around the property.
Tours to the Black Temple can be organised at any tour office in Chiang Rai, or you can take a tuk tuk to the the temple for around 300THB each way. The temple is located a short distance north of the city. Arrange for your driver to wait for you as there aren’t many options for a return trip.
Baan Dam is open daily, but visitors should note that it closes over lunch between 12pm – 1pm. There are also plenty of food options located here, with coffee shops, souvenir stores and restaurants located around the entrance.

We check out the first of three temples or temple-esque locales commonly grouped together, famed late Thai artist extraordinaire Thawan Duchanee’s Baan Dam Museum, housing a collection of many of his works and his remains. It’s commonly paired with Wat Rang Khun (the White Temple) by tourists as resembling a hell-heaven dichotomy, with Baan Dam as hell with its color scheme and emphasis on death.
NOTE: Due to my misunderstanding the guide I thought Thawan Duchanee’s student created the White Temple (featured in a later video) and mentioned this in this video. It was actually another person who did the White Temple, and that person’s student who renovated Wat Rang Seua Ten (the Blue Temple), featured in another later video). Wanted to clear things up!

On Day #9 of my 30 days Vlog - Challenge I am taking you to the Black House Museum, also known as the Baan Dam.
In the area of Black House have dwellings architecture and a variety of creative design in a total of more than 40 units by Acharn (Teacher) Thawan Duchanee.
Each building also on display are works of art to admire and clearly demonstrate the identity of A. Thawan such as buffalo horns art work, animal bones, tiger and snake skin, beautiful woodwork carving, ornate stucco art work that conceals a philosophy and quaint bathrooms. It created a lot of excitement and also gets new concepts through these artworks.
Besides, there is the Black House Gallery where is a place to exhibit paintings and works of art, including A hand stamped of A. Thawan to watch. And if you want to go shopping, there’s the souvenir art works for sale as well.
How to visit:
The Black House far from the Chiang Rai city center about 10 kilometers. From the city of Chiang Rai, drive up to the airport, pass Chiang Rai Airport and go straight to Singha Brewery Company Limited on the left hand and turn left at Soi 1. Straight ahead about 3 kilometers to reach the Black House.

Thawan Duchanee's Baan Dam - Black House - Chiang Rai, Thailand
Thawan Duchanee was a famous Thai Artist who lived from Sep 1939 till Sep 2014. He was Born in Chiang Rai in the North of Thailand and this is where he build up a large collection of traditional Thai Teak houses painted mostly in black, therefore the Name of his Black House Museum: Baan = House and Dam = Black.
His collections comprise of many animal bones, fur, teeth, etc. that you can find again in his paintings.

Black House Museum is an architectural that Thawan Duchanee who is a designer-artist. The inspiration comes from all Lan Chang, Lanna and Suvarnabhumi architectural. Each building also on show are artworks to admire and clearly exhibit the identification of A. Thawan comparable to buffalo horns artwork, animal bones, tiger and snakeskin, stunning woodwork carving, ornate stucco artwork that conceals a philosophy and quaint bathrooms almost everything inside the house is constructed from animal remains. Created by Thailand national artist Thawan Duchanee , the grounds include nearly 40 small black houses made of wood , glass , concrete , bricks or terracotta in various unique styles and designs scattered around the area . The cluster of houses accommodates Thawan's collections of paintings , sculptures , animal bones , skins , horns , silver , gold and many unique items from around the world . Several of the houses exhibit Lanna and South East Asian architecture and art dating back to the Suvarnabhumi period. The artist used all of his collections as a source of inspiration to his art .
