This video covers our visit to the Hill Tribe Village, Baan Tong Luang. It includes our meeting with the Kayan tribe also known as the long neck people who are originally from Myanmar. They are famous for their neck stretching rings and heavy jewelry. It was fun exploring their one of a kind culture. Hope you enjoy our Chiang Mai travel vlog.

VISITING LONG NECK TRIBE - Baan Tong Luang Hill Tribe Village, CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
It’s important to note that Long Necks are not native to Thailand, they are all refugees here, who have fled persecution from their homeland of Myanmar. With refugee status, their freedom is restricted, employment is largely prohibited, and opportunities bleak. However, many Long Necks are happy for tourists to visit them, because life in Thailand (albeit with restrictions in a Long Neck village), is a much better alternative than returning to Myanmar.
They are not forced to wear the rings for tourists, and that they are able to choose of their own free will. In fact, we know many young ladies who have decided not to wear the rings anymore. For those that choose to continue wearing the rings, it seems they do so, because they feel a sense of identity through these rings, which is inextricably linked to their culture, their heritage, their family and ultimately who they are. We also discovered that many are happy for tourists to visit, because this provides a vital source of income for them, without which, their quality of life would be much poorer.
What happens if the Kayan Tribe Remove their rings?
Contrary to popular belief , the women do not die if they remove their neck rings. It is reported that they feel uncomfortable for a period after removing the rings, until their body adjusts to not having them. We have known and met many young girls who have removed their rings and survived to tell the tale.
Why do they wear the rings?
There is a belief that the Long neck women wore the rings to protect themselves from tigers in the jungle. This is probably just old folklore. A more accurate reason for wearing the rings, is that they consider it a form of beauty. Similar to other forms of body modifications practiced by minority cultures across the world (such as foot-binding in China to give the appearance of smaller feet). Whenever we have asked the Long neck women about why they wear the rings, the common answer, is that it is for beautification and that it gives a sense of cultural identity.
Long Neck girls start wearing the rings at around 5 years old and more rings are gradually added as they grow older. The brass coils give the illusion of having a long neck, however they do not actually have long necks, but the collarbone and clavical is pushed down.

Year-end escapade at Chiang Mai, Thailand. When you visit Doi Suthep Temple, you have to pay 50 baht for the entrance and the elevator. We paid 200 baht at the Tiger Kingdom just to look around. But, if you want to go closer and take pictures with the tigers, you will pay 2,500 baht or more. At Baan Tong Luang, the entrance is 500 baht. The kind Grab driver, Jaran, who gave us an affordable price to visit these places. He said he wants us to be happy because it's a happy new year! ????????

Hill Tribe People, Thailand
Traveling and being adventurous is one of life's blessings and is medicine to the Soul. I traveled to Ban Phu Tub Boek, Thailand to see the clouds below the mountain and to visit with the Hmong Hill Tribe, peoples of Thailand. In the early morning I recorded the clouds bellowing up and moving with the sun. In the afternoon I went to the village for some food and to have a look around the town. There was some very basic shops and the whole area reminded me so much of visit Nepal. Best wishes.
Travel Vlog: Thailand Chiang Mai Part 3
It's called Baan Tong Luang, and is a government sponsored Hill Tribe cultural preservation village. It's not too far from the Mae Sa Elephant Camp as well as The Tiger Kingdom. Established in 2003 for agriculture, and opened for tourism in 2006. The purpose of opening for tourism was to generate income for hill tribe people while preserving the culture. This village has 5 different hill tribes and a total population of about 150 villagers including: Ka Young (the long neck), White Karen, Lahu, Hmong and Dara Ang (Refugees from Burma).
Many of the men work at the Mae Sa Elephant Camp as mahouts, so that may be the reason you didn't see too many men there when you visited.
Do be prepared for quite a bit of walking while you're visiting the Village. It is rather spread out. There is also a small restaurant where you can try some of the local food too.
